2 cats hit by cars out on the main road this weekend. Grrrrrrrrr
Their owners should be there beside them on the shoulder. Dead. And the drivers, unless they just could not possibly have avoided it without flipping their car over..
Birds are funny. Like many, we have a couple of feeders. Mostly small birds like wrens, house sparrows, and finches in this area. An occasional cardinal. All the big birds ( hawks and such ) stay in the trees and dont mess with feeders..
Normally if you go outside or get too close to the windows they fly off. UNLESS they are out of food, then they will sit in the windowsill and stare at you in the house. lol
( and i wish they were not so damned messy... )

Birds here don't depend much on us because this is a cereal area. They still gather around the hen feeder in the hopes some corn will fall out of it. Our feeders are automatic and designed so only the hends may eat from them. Otherwise we would spend soooo much money feeding sparrows and squirrels.
They do rely on us a lot in these parts now, since we are now land of concrete.
Not seen a deer in a decade around here. Foxes, gone. Coyote.. gone. Even raccoons and possums are getting scarce.

This morning she is really really bad. I don't think she is going to make it past today. Usually I place sick hens in a quarantine jail but I really don't want this hen to die in a jail. I left for work and let her stay in the corral. The bedroom already smells like a mixture of chicken coop and stable anyway.
It's always hard to lose a pet, of any kind.
My dear little hen is gone now. It is hard to believe I am suffering so much over a hen. I don't think she suffered much, so there is that.

Well, yeah, except I actually tried to make the mental division that hens are production animals unlike dogs and horses, who are pets.
My problem is the moment I have to take care of a sick animal I pity her and end up internalizing her as a pet anyway :(
This weakness of mine is what actually prevents me from going full-farm mode and why most of the food I produce here are vegetables. I could not produce horse milk without feeling bad as fuck.
At this point something behind me took my hat. My first thought was "Holy Shit, my coconuts have grown so fucking large!" It took me a good handful of seconds to realize it wasn't a dog, but a mare who wanted some play.
While thankfully i am not in that situation, don't think i could. Or would want to try.

Yeah, but it makes things a bit harder.
I mean, if I was like some other people in the valley, I could have access to an unlimited supply of foal meat and horse milk. Honestly, if I made that mental switch right now I could off-grid myself immediately and disappear because my farm would pretty much be self-sustainable for myself and my family.
However, my idea of "family" happens to include the horses and the idea of exploiting them is so fucking disgusting it twists my guts, which means I need to rely on different plans.

Presumably he feels that all cats should be kept inside all the time.
I get it, and it's one way to go. My cats go outside. They do cat things, but they do their napping inside the house, so they're home most of the time.
Honestly I think cats are much happier when they are allowed to "be cats" by roaming around outside a bit.
Either way is acceptable, I generally don't look down on people making either decision.
When it comes to roadkill however, I would definitely like to run down the fox that ate one of my cats a couple of years ago.
That's what I tried to do with my remaining cat since my other cat was run over, but the little stinker always managed to slip out whenever someone needed to step outside. We finally gave up and started letting him in and out as he pleases. Thankfully he doesn't go near the road like the other one did.

I suspect a cat that lives a full lifetime indoors has wasted his life when compared to a cat that lives a third of a lifetime outdoors and one day gets eaten by whichever predator prowls around.
Road traffic here is negligible so people leave cats to roam freely and don't give it any thought. It is just the natural thing to do.
Thankfully I don't have this dilemma since I don't have cats and cats don't like the place much anyway. Still I used to wonder if my horses felt caged and it made me a bit anxious, which I think is related.

It breaks my heart to take the eggs, but they are soooo tasty.
