But they're not able to tell me when, or even if, IPv6 will be restored.
I've been very loyal to this company because they've taken good care of me over the years, always provided good support, but I'm a bit annoyed bout this one.
Ah.. understood.
May not be as transparent as what you have, but the one i use offers static + port mapping. Unsure about IPv6 tho.. i didn't need to look that close since i bought a business IP from my ISP and got around it all for incoming connections. its PIA, been using it for over a decade now. Ironically its the same one Zoe uses to get around some issues at her place connecting to her work in another 'area' ( wont get into details, oh and ya shes still around, we still talk every weekend, just been busy. )
These days i mostly use it to get around rate limiters.. I hit the limit with my real IP, i go VPN and finish. I don't do anything where i need to 'hide', so to speak, but they dont log, and have proven such in some court cases "sorry, we don't have it, cya"

It's $15/month for 5 Mbps of bandwidth and /29 IPv4 address block. And until last week, a /64 IPv6 address block.
I see that OVHcloud has a virtual private server for $4.20/month, with 400 Mbps of bandwidth (unlimited traffic) and extra IP addresses for $2/month each. I should probably just get one of those, and treat it as a router-in-the-cloud.
For some reason I feel some loyalty to Ace.
Right, incoming wont keep you hidden. Its just that is their main business. Looks like their dedicated IP offering is about the same, 3.30 a month if you go with a year contract. But never really looked that close, i didnt need it.
Wed Nov 12 2025 16:21:44 UTC from IGnatius T Foobar Subject: Re: IPv6 down on all citadel.org propertiesRight, this isn't a consumer VPN used to get *out* unseen, this is a special kind that lets people get *in* on a dedicated address block so you can self-host at home. And it's been great for years. You're using it right now in fact, since you're logged in to this system.

I think mine allows incoming connections, and i know with my domain registrar i can use any IP i want for DNS, even non-static like i had on Comcast, it had a 30 day lease time and sometimes did NOT get the same IP the next time.. but at least it was 'mine' and not behind a NAT. Tho a bit of a hassle, it worked with dial-up long ago, even before i bought a static IP for that. ( which is a funny story ill have to tell sometime )
Not saying its what you want, just some may not be as bad as others.
Wed Nov 12 2025 19:15:41 UTC from IGnatius T Foobar Subject: Re: IPv6 down on all citadel.org propertiesI've looked into those. The "dedicated IP" offerings from most consumer grade VPN services don't provide you with the ability to run incoming server hosting, and they definitely don't offer reverse DNS mapping. They simply give you an address that you don't have to share with other customers, and that you can whitelist in other places' firewalls.
Forgot i had used one of those free dynamic IP DNS things too, many years ago. Mostly for clients who didn't want to 'host' and didn't want to spend the extra for static or domain names, but but it allowed me ( or them ) to vpn in as needed. Had it do auto check and update the records as needed every few hours.
I could be wrong but i think i used dyndns. i see its now owned by oracle, ick.. lol.
Getting DpS pounded tonight? Got a couple of timeouts and really really slow load times.
If not, something is up.
That would be "DoS" for those of us who can type, which is clearly not me. Geesh.

Related, looks like they killed SSL again.

Fri Nov 14 2025 14:10:55 UTC from IGnatius T Foobardammit. must be some new kind of attack.
I really, really need access to nuclear weapons.
The traffic here is impressive. So... It is depressing that I can't really find a job in IT at this point as a straight, white male with 20+ years of IT experience who can figure out how to run my own Proxmox environment with a hidden IP with a public face on a consume Cox cable network where that violates the ToS. That *used* to be what Corporate America wanted. Guys who knew how to *really* break the rules. Now they want offshore guys who will run 3000 servers in a DC hosting cloud based apps.
Things change, I guess. I know I'm a whirlwind of chaos coming into a shop and people go, "Man, you shouldn't let that dude in your datacenter," but at the same time, I think I eventually proved myself here.
I just console myself with the idea that I'm just too damn good for fortune 500 companies. They're afraid I'll tip the boat.
Helps me sleep at night, anyhow. I should be making $180k/yr.
The market is tough for everyone.
If you have experience, it also means you get to be paid more, but a 'kid' is far cheaper and fits the 'woke office culture' more than an older person. I see it every day where i am at. Office has become a social club and old timers who bail out, don't get replaced with 'up and comers', its new kids.
Sure, not all of the kids are bad, but far too many don't have a clue. BUT.. they were cheap..

I *am* the dude you shouldn't let into the data center. But I'm also the dude who can fix a problem that no one else can seem to figure out. Because I designed the damn thing.
But yes, if you're looking at large and/or Fortune 500 and/or west coast companies, the skills they're looking for are (1) a willingness to work for peanuts, and/or (2) the ability to fill diversity quotas. Maybe don't look at those sort of companies.
And don't lose heart. Things are always changing.
I tried, I couldn't make it all the way through. You guys have a
lot to say.
I don't always go all the way through either. Especially in a room where there's only one new message. Otherwise every room would be ig-nurb-ig-nurb-ig-nurb with occasional dots of other people in the thread. So I skip until there's a good amount of thread to reply to.
lol

Might just be me, but stuff is not right this weekend. super slow, sometimes never finishing loading. .etc. Guessing yet another attack. Both with and without SSL.
