It becomes a question of who to trust. In most cases I trust a binary
built by Debian more than I would a source tarball or a git checkout.
Large public code bases like Debian and the GNU toolset are now constantly getting hit by "audit kiddies" who slam the repositories with AI tools just to get their name on a CVE. Anything that doesn't belong in there is going to get found pretty quickly. Seems like every week we read a story "security issue that's been in there for ten years has been uncovered"

I wonder if it's time to rethink again? Most computers are fast enough
now that it's possible for most users to compile at install time.
Main reason I am not running source-based Linux distributions at home is that in order for that to work you need a decent Internet connection and then a decent PC. I could drop some money on a decent PC for compilers not to take ages. I cannot drop money on a better Internet line to download source code trees.
I tried. I started negotiations with the ISP and I was willing to pay for the construction of a physical end-to-end connection to their infrastructure but they turned the idea down.

In this day and age, im sure customs would eat it. Its why i didn't get to send some books and stuff to a friend overseas. "they wont allow non native books entry without a HUGE fee and often times, not at all". Especially if they are 'technical or educational books' ( this was, it was my collection of FORTH books )

Customs here inspect a percentage of incoming parcels that is in the single digits, and of the ones they inspect they let go anything that does not look valuable unprocessed. Meaning anything that looks used or cheap is not going to be paid attention to unless the authorities have a specific problem with it (such as wares coming from countries which are at commercial war with us).

Again, my problem is not hardware, my problem is my home is too isolated to get a proper Internet line.

Debian Linux/Linux finally made a decision on whether to permit AI-generated contributions. They ended up deciding that their official position is that they have no position on it, basically that it's allowed but neither encouraged nor discouraged.
This ended up irking at least one "developer" who has left the project because he considers it "Debian fully embracing fascist-backed technology". He went on to say "Pretending to have a 'neutral stance' when faced with fascism is not neutrality, it's active collaboration."
So apparently the anti-AI push in some of these camps is a very weird political thing. Let me see if I can get this straight: there are a lot of different AI companies, one of them is Grok, Grok is run by SpaceX/AI, which is majority owned by Elon Musk, who is friendly with President Trump, who is not a leftist, therefore AI is fascist.
It really is "If you're not with us you're against us" ad absurdum.
