I was at the dentist yesterday, there were no Van Halen references, but there is a Beatles reference.

Important announcement:

www.citadel.org and associated sites (probably not Uncensored, but who knows) may go dark for a couple of days next week. No, this has nothing to do with the US elections. Some shithead hackers are messing with us, and we may be in for a DDoS attack and/or changing the site's hosting arrangements.

If you are unable to reach any Citadel site, please just wait a day or two and try again.

If you're interested in the technical details, please see the Security room.

So, is it that we're not in line with the program?

Naah, just some douchebags on the other side of the world messing with us.
We dodged it handily.

So, it is traditional on the Sacramento Citadels to have a room called Other BBSes] I directory room with a text list of other BBSes and a place for Sysops or users to post links to BBSes. Of course, there were more BBSes then...

But I looked for one here and sadly, this does not seem to be a tradition that is carried on among the East Coast Citadels?

I know I could create the room myself - but I'm a guest in a different Citadel culture than my own, here, so I thought I'd ask if it would be OK? ;)

It isn't because we're on the east coast, it's because the culture has changed.
Most people don't even know what a BBS is. In this season our user community is mostly comprised of the following three types of people:
1. People who have been here for a long time. Some are constant, others bounce in and out.
2. Old-skool Citadelians who are happy to discover a Citadel that has been online for 32+ years.
3. People who originally came here for software support, explored the other parts of the site, and stuck around.

We had an Other BBS room during the dialup era. You could create one today if you wanted to, but I doubt it would see any traffic other than your one listing. The dynamic is just ... different now.

I know - it is just more for familiarity. But - it is worth noting that there is this huge retro revival right now. There is a Telnet BBS list page, and when I was active on it, I was getting a bit of traffic from that site. The site cancelled my entry for some reason - hopefully because they pinged me and thought I was down and not because of the URL...

But once I get Ace set up, I'm going to add my entry back there.

Of course, a lot of the retro-interest is with Millennial audiences, and that can bring some of exactly the philosophy and ideology we're trying to avoid by not being on the sites they love.

"Wow, this is so cool, I really dig how old school it feels, only, there are some problematic things about the attitudes and ideas expressed here I would like to see corrected."

Great...

A project that would probably keep me busy is actually upgrading to the latest version of Citadel. I'm on whatever version I installed a year or so ago still.

I bet I'm missing a lot. :)

Those days were better days to own a home computer.
