Got about an inch of snow last night. supposed to have been closer to 6. Oh well, its enough for my one dog to roll around in which is all that matters.

i wonder if our pets thank/blame us for the weather outside or if they don't think about it and the weather 'just is what it is'.  

To catch a cat, little works better than a cardboard box on the floor. Its like a moth and a light..

To catch a dog, just carry a plate across the living room....

I guess it beats leaving the dog on the roof.

On the other hand, they might like that!

And why is it any time me and my dog go to social, all the dogs always tend to congregate around me to frolic with the other dogs, instead of the trainers or their owners?

I'm constantly tripping over the silly things until they get tired, then they all just seem to follow me around the room ( we walk around the edges near the walls, while the dogs do their thing in the middle, so they don't 'focus' on us ) 

Took one of the dogs out to the river today, to hang out with my sister and her dog. As always it went well.  Got back to the jeep, tossed the dog inside, gave her a drink. went and petted sisters dog bye.  And off we left.

Wandered around the 'rustic' trail a bit before we hit the 'official' one that is paved.   Samhain festival was yesterday and part of it is to 'hauntify' the trail. They didn't get it all cleaned up yet.  Didn't pass up the chance for a picture. She wasn't impressed  lol

And ya, we wear camo so the trail cams dont pick us up and report back to the county.  LoL, ok shes been chewing lately, and those shirts stop it. And since it was in the upper 50s, not worth the hassle to remove and put it back on.

And it seems that pet drugs are higher ( again, forgetting reduction due to insurance coverage )

I brought him in to a "real" animal hospital yesterday. He has a fracture.
He's getting hardware. The two of us will be a matched pair. And the bill will be eye watering.

On the good side, I met about half a dozen people there who want to ride with me for revenge if we ever figure out who shot my baby.

Due to safety, i don't give them the option to go wander.  Unless they are willing not to leave the privacy fenced yard, they dont get to go out.

I did that when i was a child. He got hurt ( but after surgery did survive ). Never again.

How about making it permanent?

We didn't choose for our boys to be indoor/outdoor cats.  Both of them pretty much demanded it.

The older one got to a certain age and then began going crazy.  When he started getting outdoor time he calmed right down.  He's now 11 and he seems to have a good sense of safety.

The younger one is a former stray, or maybe he was abandoned because he's just so goshdarn sweet, but he also does much better when he has some outside time.  He also does a good job keeping safe when no one is shooting at him.  This isn't that kind of neighborhood.  And as soon as I run over the perp with my truck it will continue to not be that kind of neighborhood.

We also had a third cat, who never went outside despite having access to the outside.  One night she decided to go explore and got eaten by a fox.  Dummy.

They should have their assets seized to fund animal care, and be used for feed. Or at least fertilizer.

Well, the cat is back that i have talked about before, not the one with the bad neck/foot, but the one where i tracked down the owner.  Saw him under my bush outside the computer room just now.  He used to spend his days there in the shade napping.

 

I'm happy to see he is ok, but i'm not happy to see hes back outside. Especially since we have heat indexes in the 100s again.

I guess there is a flesh eating worm down in Mexico.  FDA ( or AG Secretary, or something, i donno, dont matter, Feds. ) banned import of beef to keep it from spreading here.   But, they just decided to let them back in.   Real dangerous stuff, aside from cows, it can even eat our pets and us..  i guess it happened once long ago and decimated herds..

latest: Cracked a rib  ( perhaps even broke, but i didn't bother to go to the doctor. I knew what was up, and how to be careful until it healed. not much they could do anyway other than verify and bill me ). Not end of world but hurt like hell for quite a while.

So Tiny Coconut, Little Coconut and Woolly Coconut teamed up and, with the pretext of running after a ball my father had thrown, crashed into me and ruined my week very badly. Specially because Tiny Coconut is 120 Ib - take a guess at how large are the big ones.

It seems I am bound to a cane for the time being since my knee is fucked up. I have a beautiful cane for old ladies with a colorful flower theme.

He also shot one of their dogs. It just now had to be put down due to the injuries.

As mentioned Nurb and I spent most of a day in a state park hiking and stuff.  Nothing new. i like woods. He does too.  But as we walked around a little, the wildlife started following us, it was weird.... Then started coming up to us to be petted by him, and get a treat. He had a bag of dry corn.. "for the animals"... um ok.. i had no clue what he meant.   Birds would land on his shoulder, squirrels visited.  even a couple of deer came by.   if i had not seen it with my own eyes id not believe it. Was like out of a movie.

A few came up and seemed nervous around his dog.  Instantly his dog would lay down, put her face down and then he would take a step forward. pet/feed..  The wild animal would wander off and dog would get up and come to his side..

And on the topic of his dog, its one of the most beautiful dogs i have i ever seen. Long hair, red, German Shepherd female. Should be in the AKC show circuit..   And i have never ever seen such an obedient/smart/behaved/devoted/whatever.. it was like they were psychically linked..  it was almost scary how connected they seemed to be. And yes, i know... dogs and their trainer/handler develop a special bond you don't see with 'just pets', but this was just unreal, in a wonderful way.

Had a few of those again recently ( barely over the floods ). I guess just south of here across the border, 20+ people didn't make it.

Birds here don't depend much on us because this is a cereal area. They still gather around the hen feeder in the hopes some corn will fall out of it. Our feeders are automatic and designed so only the hends may eat from them. Otherwise we would spend soooo much money feeding sparrows and squirrels.

Birds are funny. Like many, we have a couple of feeders.  Mostly small birds like wrens, house sparrows, and finches in this area. An occasional cardinal. All the big birds ( hawks and such ) stay in the trees and dont mess with feeders..

Normally if you go outside or get too close to the windows they fly off. UNLESS they are out of food, then they will sit in the windowsill and stare at you in the house.   lol

( and i wish they were not so damned messy... )

Dog is doing better.  Not 100% but nearly back to normal.

It doesn't seem serous at this point, shes just 'bleh', stomach making all sorts of noise, ick-poo, and wanted to go out about 7 times last night.

Did this last week too, but thought she was fine. now same.   

About time for more anti-acid, trying to calm that stomach down.

I have considered a doggy door sort of thing in the past, but it wouldn't work here. One cat cant be trusted outside as he would hop the fence and go roam. Cant allow that.

I used to have a 16 year old dog who seemed very frail. Everybody who visited
the house for whatever reason mentioned that dog was near the end of the road. Well, it turns out the dog was near the end of the road for YEARS.

And on top of everything else we have, my old dog now has pressure sores on her bad hip due to her hip bones.  Caused by loss of muscle mass due to the osteoarthritis, and age ( 13 ). 

One consolation is its not cancer again, the spots look almost the same. We almost lost her that time. And at 13, it wont take much.

anything you can give with a syringe is far less trouble than a pill.

This was not life threatening either, but 'quality of life' stuff. If it was 'serious', id be off to another vet to get it. And they had the backup. which seems to be working again ( but i really dont want to start giving him liquid he hates 2x a day long term again...).  Just i should not need to have asked, that annoyed me the most. Yes, its not life threatening, but still...... Also, they called about an hour ago. They expect shipment later today.

so disorganized. luckily it wasn't one of those life-depends-on-it meds, I shudder to think what would happen if it was.

Cat in for monthly shot.. They take him back.. Quite a bit longer than normal.. bring him back out " we are out of the bla bla" " i guess our ordering girl forgot, we will have to talk to her next week". "Um, we need to do something today, can we do xyz for a few days as a Plan B"  "May not work, but worth a try". ( going back on older drug that quit working, but that has been a year now )

how does a vet run out? I hear its not common to give this drug ( Plan B normally is enough and they dont get used to it like mine did  ) so should be pretty easy to predict need based on scheduled visits coming up.  And why did they not come out of the gate with suggestions to get by, i should not have had to do that.

We have one cat currently we can trust to be out in the back ( wood fenced ) yard as he wont try to leave.

Went out to get him a bit ago, was stalking/chasing a squirrel.   It left him the dust.  Zooooooom. Blink and the squirrel was across the yard, one jump on the fence and he was on the roof next door..       But hey, the cat tried. lol.

yay first real nice day in a while. Overcast, 65..  Planned on taking both dogs to the river.  And trying to con my sister to bring her husky.

Sooo i spent all night sick and in bed most of the day.

Mentioned before i have a cat that aggressively over grooms.

• on prednisone for a few years. worked great, eventually stopped working.  ( tho liquid medicine for a cat 2x a day, its rough )
• tired something else. seemed to be helping. Monthly shot. ( i forget the name )
• tried to get into a new drug study.. fail. ( too fat, due to years of steroids )
• soooo back to the "something else" ...
• new study...  fail.. not 'bad enough' ..  ( study to show effective in cats. not for safety already knew it was safe. and is used in dogs. )
• but vet said 'we will try that stuff anyway, do our own study'.  a tiny pill powderize it, easy to mix with 'tasty stuff'. 
• seemed to be helping for ~ 2 weeks.. then started back up 
• Yesterday afternoon, Vet: 'switch to a dose 2x a day' and let us know Monday.

So i wake up to fur all over the house as he did this to his back late last night:  (sigh)

Going to end up back on steroids, which is not good at his age  ( 11+ )

( waiting to hear back from vet.. sprayed him with antibiotic and put on a coat. but hes chewing his legs too, and the coat wont protect that )

I have mentioned it before i live in a development ( bleh ).   Side effect is sometimes people go outside, walk down the street, or to their cars in their driveways/etc.

When the windows are open, my GSD, normally ignores stuff, kids running around, even dogs barking in a back yard. Yet she can hear a dog 3 houses away walking in the street or their driveway, starts grumbling.. 

This one has a home.  Was able to track his owner down.  Seems hes 17+. He was missing for 2 years. Found several miles away ( past a couple of housing developments and some warehouses, so not 'just' a few miles ).   Hard to say what happened, but hes home now.  ( and visits us some too )

scrawny, seems older.  Tail shaved so don't think he was dumped and is still a pet. Clearly not feral as i was able to pick him up on our first meet.  Also not afraid of dogs. 

Dammit.  Trying to get one of my cats in for a study.  ( over/aggressive grooming )  First time he failed due to weight.  Another study came up, different medication so weight was not a factor. 

Waited 30 days or so after his last steroid shot started back up, but wasn't quite bad enough.  So fail.. doh... But vet gave me a bottle of what was going to be tested, so we can do our own test.  Goal is to get him off steroids before he gets much older. Hes a bit over 11. Him being overweight is due to years of them. Well, that and hes a big boy anyway.

i guess its used on-label for dogs, ( and i have given it to my dogs a couple of times )   and some vets, including ours, do it off-label for cats, and the company is trying to get it approved for on-label use in cats.

Well, still no luck ( and no recent sighting :( )  with the injured cat, but i heard a cat fight out front a bit ago... voice sounded familiar, its the one from last year that the owner kept inside after i let her know he was injured.

Was nice to see him and know he is ok. Its been months

Wondering if shes going for a while again and dumped him outside or what.  If it starts to get cold, hes coming inside.

Why cant people just mind their own business? "hi, hello, nice dog, etc" Please just walk past and leave us alone..  I don't wear a sign "i'm lonely lets talk" or something.  One of my dogs is afraid of strangers. And i don't like people.. 

I have a shirt with the 'shy' dog wearing a mask and the caption "ewwwwww people" which ironically gets more attention than not..

Sky raisin in the house.. bleh.  

Some days i think seeds magically teleport into my FCR dog's fur.  My other dogs never had it so bad..  20 feet into the woods, look down, she is covered.. 20+ minutes to get it all out.

About got in a fight today out with the dog.

Still not 100% sure what the idiot was saying ( other than a few bits and pieces, 'kids play here' 'i dont care'  and 'put your dog away and we will talk'  ) but was harassing me and my GSD, taking pictures, following us home.  Ended up taking my camera out at one intersection where we were going to try to either ditch him or circle back around to end up at the fire station which was full of people ( not sure what was up, several area trucks were hanging out. party perhaps ).   Was going to take a picture of his sorry ass to send to the cops, but he ran off the other direction. 

Ended up calling the cops at home, but had to use vague description " low 30 something, overweight, beard, bicycle, backpack"     Frisbee throwing Millennial or something that lives in his mothers basement.

Told him to get a job at one point and to f-off. that really offended him.

Now the other dog has it.

I told the vet "we have another dog and 2 cats" she blew it off.    Now i worry about the cats, and if we can catch it too... Waiting for a call back.

Related to another thread, i pulled our dead clothes washer out a bit ago to get ready for the new one tomorrow.  Cats are sitting where it used to be, looking around in the air confused...  Dogs walk up, look at the empty spot. then look at me with a WTF sideways face..  

Depending on where the 'chew' is, ya it might work better.  In this case its the 'next step' after the inflatable collar.  And is doing the job. She isn't pleased but she cant get to it when i leave her alone to go 'do stuff' ( or sleep ).   Last resort we do have one of those plastic ones in the garage.  We also often use a 'coat' to start with if its body and not legs, but vet wants this to get air, so that was off the table.

I am sure they are a bit warmer than plastic, but i have a couple of floor fans down in the rooms we mostly stay in so she can stick her face near if she needs to.

I am a fan of the stellite dish cone. I have some soft ones for the very nervous dogs, but the satellite dishes are usually more effective. It is too bad they are too cumbersome.

Tho a couple were mixes, which may negate this illness, I have had several full blooded over the years, and this is the first one that may have the problem.  Not saying its not common, but i must have got lucky before. Last time she had this, the drugs did clear it up. so either way it seems like this can be managed. They also say if she does end up testing positive for this and its not severe, they have some sort of maintenance drug she can be on. 

Last night was her first time with a cone. Took her forever just to figure out how to lay down ( its a "soft cone", not one of those hard plastic satellite dishes ..still not fun, but not as bad.. .).  Last time we went thru this i used an inflatable collar and slept on the floor with her, but that wont do it this time as its a little but down the sides of her back towards her hips and she can reach around the donut.

its amazing how much the fur can hide.  

She lost 8+ pounds too...:(     With her being a long hair, harder to notice. shes always big and fluffy.

Major bacterial skin infection again.  Shaved her back, most was hidden by the fur like last time.  Almost had to sedate her. Drugs for 2 weeks then a followup.

Since this is 2x in 3 years they are concerned she has some sort of minor immune deficiency, which i guess is common in GSDs. ( news to me, but never had to care before )

She had a skin infection perhaps 3 years ago too middle of her back, down near the tail.  ( this is in a couple of spots this time tho )  Not sure where it came from, either time .

Seems one of my dogs has a skin infection her self, groomer found it.  Trying to get her into the vet tomorrow morning. 

Possible update.

Talking to someone over by our park which is several blocks away, they say the see the cat often, in the bushes at a local dentist office.     Going to go visit and talk to them tomorrow. Perhaps they can help capture him.

If he is that far, explains why we rarely see him, it would be a hell of a trip on 3 legs.

Took the old dog to the river today. First time shes been able to swim this summer ( due to the torn ACL )

Not sure she even believed we were going to get out of the jeep at first.   "wait, we are stopping.. and you are putting the ramp down..  yayayayayayay"

Added another camera, trap is ready.  Not seen again.   I have no clue where hides.  He needs rescued, badly.   Not that i want yet another cat at this point in my life, but he needs to be off the streets and safe. 

Grey cat was seen last night at midnight. Really thought he was long gone.  Trap goes back out tonight.   

Chances are slim, but if i can catch him, he will be headed to the vet. and will have a safe home to be in for the rest of his life.

These things are super intelligent.  As a pet, they are a lot like 'cats with wings' in personality.  I don't know how much brain can be shoved in such a small package.

Nandays rarely learn to speak words, but they do use sounds to communicate ( door sounds, various screeches, water bubbling sounds, knocking, etc ).   And are some of the loudest birds out there when they want to be.  I dont know how he knew, but he would screech his hello sound just when i entered our development. I could hear him 2 blocks away.  We had another in the area, same thing, could hear him way down the road.. never knew where.  Managed to see it in a window one day.  They would talk to each other on cool evenings when i had the windows open.

Hens are only somehow cute because of their dumb factor. By that I mean that you see a hen and you realize how dumb it is, and then feel compelled to protect her and love her because she is so defenseless. If that makes any sense.

Mine was around 30 when we lost him. I think average for pets.  Was with me 25 years or so.  He was a rescue, so not really socialized. He was my first bird.  So we adapted together. But, even day one he was attached to me like glue.  "he is kind of afraid of men, not sure how he is going to react when you go in there "   as he jumped off the cage in the other room, came in, walked across the room, up my leg and sat on my shoulder.  "lets go home"

Parrots are fucking awesome.

Both stairs and ramps are a thing.   But, in her case, stairs would not be a good idea. This one folds up with 4 sections so its not too large and easy to store in the back. Id say about 5' long unfolded, 1.5' across ( just guessing.  )

Most dogs love rides, they like stuff moving around them ( i guess its like running, without the effort ), the wind, seeing things fly by.  Unless the only time they go for one is a bad destination..

i know its their nature, but really wish my cats would not go out and try to kill birds.  Its not like they need the food. 

Just now found my cat in the garage holding one down. Not sure if its going to live or not.  May have a broken leg. Stuck it in a cage, has water now and is in the house where its cool.   we will see.

But, back OT for dogs..

My 12.5 year old FCR, who has not been able to go on a walk for 8 weeks due to a torn ACL, yesterday we got to go to the wooded park. Only for a few minutes, must take it slow, but she was thrilled to death to get to actually stop and get out.  Been taking her for rides all along so shes not stuck in the house, but its not the same.

Bought her a fancy new ramp for the jeep too. Got rid of the old plastic one, now its metal, and has a cloth covering so zero slippage.  Even after shes fully recovered, its now a permanent part of our travels. While i have always lifted her into the back, i'm not going to risk her tearing it again jumping out.  

The "Pet Palace"  a room for all pets.. 

Well i did say "many"..  But, i would never be the one to say no..  :) 

And i guess we should include feathered friends..    I do miss my parrot.  Really good pet.

And to start the room off:    The good news, is i just found out my kitchen table will support a 80+ pound weight. The bad news, is i just found out it can support an 80+ pound weight.

We feed the cats a can of food each morning, mix in their drugs. Have a 'pad' to collect anything that comes off the tray, which isn't often.   I guess today something did and i missed it when i put the tray away.. Couple hours later, walked into see my GSD sitting on the table licking up scraps..

Not seen him since that picture was taken. I don't think he made it.    :(           I went and bought a live trap the next day. 

I really hope someone took him in and just didn't tell anyone.

sigh.

Well, now we have a new cat issue here.

While im still not thrilled about the other situation, he does have a home, and his owner IS availble at times.   Ill just keep an eye out, and keep feeding him and giving him attention. He had got some cuts last week from yet another fight, told the owner, he's now being kept inside to heal... So there is that. I'm glad i finally got her number.

But we have another that comes around every once in a while, i assumed it had a home. Rumor is no, its been abandoned about a year ago.   Its always had something on its neck, but assumed the owners knew.   Yesterday, he came up to feed, limping, cant use his front right leg at all, and his neck is in pieces.   We now have the entire area looking out to try to capture him somehow. If anyone can get him, i will take him in, and to the vet. And keep him in afterwards, if we can get him before he dies.

There was no cat biting here. they got along surprisingly well for an 'invader' suddenly appearing in an established home.  But its just what i was told by the vet when i asked why.

That's not what I've read; in fact, all of the veterinary medicine sites call out specifically that FIV is not typically transmitted through the litter box. They say that the vast majority of transmissions occur through being bitten by an infected cat. Our cats don't fight with each other so I think they're ok there. Unfortunately keeping either one of them completely indoors is a non-starter. They'd both go crazy and destroy the whole house and then find a way out anyway.

Not good.  I lost 2 cats that way.   Got a stray at work. I was working the dock that morning and he came up and sat on the lift.. mewing at me all day. He was clearly homeless so took him home that evening. Took him in to get shots. They didnt bother to test him first and just gave him the shot.  Months later, by the time we found out he had given it to my other cat.  

Keep him separated from any others you have, especially the litter box.   I hear there are some treatments now to help. not fix, but to make his life better.

Longer version is i caught her in her driveway.   i ran ( literally ) over with a small bag of food and 2 cans .. stuck my number to one of the cans.   She never answers her door the little bit of time she is at home once or twice a week so i got lucky.

Its also how i found out his real name, seems the other neighbor had it wrong. I came up to her car " this is for so and so, bla bla we care and if you ever need any help with him here is my number" and she looked at me like i was nuts at first.  Then is said "you know, your cat" and she was ok and lit up with a thank you, later she texted me and used his name, "ah, that explains why you were so confused when i came over..   lol. "

So seen these 2 cats several times together today.   Went out a bit ago and both came over for dinner while i was standing there... They were hiding in my bushes. The one i know, that is normal to hide in the bushes, but never seen this black cat before today, now it acts like it lives here.  5 mins ago it was stretched out on my front step. 

Checked with the owner of the one i know, and its not hers..( long story, but i finally got her phone number a couple of weeks ago . dont know her name tho..  ) 

Well that was freaking scary.

Heard mewing out my window.  Look out to see the 'feral' walking around my peach tree. No big deal, was going to go out and visit.  THEN i saw a huge black long hair cat walking up the other side. ( not threatening just walking ) and it looks 100% like one of mine.....  Panic.. run around the house looking for a screen that fell out or door left open and trying to find my cat..

But no.. mine is in the dog kennel safely sleeping ( i dont know why, but he likes it in there. both cats do, and prefer to drink the water in there ... ).   so we have a new cat in the area.  

He has been known to jump the back fence of 6'... so hes not allowed outside. 

(  kennel as we still have the issue of one dog being aggressive if there is no 'gate' .. so one has to sleep in there at night.  That way one is not in another room at night and both can sleep in the same room with me.   but shes still super friendly as long as there is some sort of barrier. i wish i understood )

I even brake for bugs.. or at least try to avoid them.   ( like in spring when we get roads full of those little fuzzy rollypollys )

Oh, they have been, but first time i have seen them together.

Yep. i saw him under one of my cars when i got back from walking one of the dogs this afternoon. Put the dog away and he was gone.. but later saw him walking up the driveway of another house he would visit and get fed.  Talked to the guy there, he got to see him up close, its him

Later this evening i saw him at the house that he 'lives' at ( if you want to call i that )  Sat at the end of my driveway, he saw me. but hes scared. Normally he'd mew and run over to be held.  Who knows where he has been or been thru.   It will take awhile for him to warm up again.

So not seen him for about 1.5 week.

Saturday his 'owners' were home for a couple of hours. Walked past, noticed a litter box and pet carrier tossed in the junk pile they have in their carport.  Today they were there for a few hours. Went over and beat on the door several times. They refused to answer. They now have dogs.  I put money down that they got dogs and got rid of him. I'm going to the pound and humane society tomorow hoping i find him.

I failed him. ill never forgive myself.

Put the dogs away this morning ( well were asleep anyway, after breakfast nap ).  Cats were in the back bedroom sleeping..  Went out to feed/water and pet the cat.  ( his name is jack. Neighbor kids 2 houses down also feed him, they learned his name on one of the rare occasions his owners were home i guess )

After petting ( well holding too, he likes being held ), put him down beside the front door. Opened it up to go in, slowly, he stretched as far as he could to peek inside and look around.  Didn't come in, but didnt run off either. House smells of cat and dog so i'm sure he was wondering 'who is in here that is going to eat me'.

Its another step...  goal now is to get him inside before it gets cold in January. ( on his own, i dont want to just grab him and toss him thru the door like a sack of potatoes ).  I give up playing by the rules, his owners dont deserve him.  F-them..

Not weird to me.  Slug deserves to live, just not in the house.  I'm like that with most critters.

So one of the cats i feed.  Took me almost a year for him to trust me.  This summer he took the risk, and ever since he would run down the street and get petted and such. Even was able to carry him around. 

About a month ago he vanished.  I pretty much gave up hope and wanted to go beat his owners into the ground with a bat for casting him outside 24/7 and leaving for days on end as well.. I remember one time being outside and saw them come home. He ran across the street to greet them. Sat in the drive and waited. They got out. Gave him one pat and went into the house, leaving him sitting there.   Not that any pet deserves to be treated like that, but hes a really sweet cat once he trusts you which makes it even worse.

We have a camera on the outside food "shed" thing.  This morning at 5am his face was there.. yay!     Refill the bowl at 630ish.  Around 7 take a peek out side. and hes there in the drive. in the pouring rain.  But i run out and get to pet him even tho we are soaked.   

YAY!

Back to the vet again. a new steroid to try. They think he 'adjusted' to the other, so its not effective anymore.

Poor thing was so scared today he was shaking.  Sigh. 

Well my cat with the 'over grooming' issue is back at it again. Was good for over a year. Started back up a few weeks ago.  Took him in, gave him 3 days of steroids ( on top what he takes now. and giving a cat drugs 2x a day SUCKS.. ) and it helped.  But not for long.  Put a shirt on him. So he just pulls fur out of his legs instead of his back.  But at least it let his back heal, it was getting infected from all the chewing. ( and of course giving him even more cause to chew at it )

Back to vet in 2 weeks. Talking another steroid trial.

so frustrating. I hate to see him like this. hes miserable. 

I have had 3 big long hared black cats over the years. Each had severe medical issues.

Averaging 3 cats each morning waiting on breakfast lately.  

Still cant pet one of them. He will flip on his back n the driveway, and we can have mew-talks ..  but 10 feet away. 

This morning one of the neighbor cats was sitting out on the porch waiting for breakfast food/water ( not unusual ).  

Open the door to go out to put food in the feeder, it walked in the house. 

Mention before we have several cats in the area, so we put out food, water ( in a little thing with a roof, keeps the birds out and food dry ), and a small shelter, sort of nestled in some bushes ( to keep it out of the winter wind mostly and to make it feel safer )

One has taken to sitting on the shelter in the mornings watching the birds. Just sits there all morning hanging out like he lives here.  ( we have feeders out for the birds too )

well the cat in the image above, tried to get him in a medical study for itchy cats. He over grooms so much he rips fur out in big chunks and tears his skin up.  He was disqualified for being too fat.   Stuff he takes now for it made him gain a bunch of weight.  I was hoping this would let us get off that :(

Too cold today, but couple of days ago when it was still in the 60s, came home to find one of the neighborhood cats sleeping in the bird bath we have out front. Sort of a concrete pedestal  thing with a bowl on top. ( yes, we feed birds... and the squirrels too )

Local cat population is increasing on my street. ( pets, not ferals )   There are enough that we now have daily arguments between them :(  (  technically, nightly.. )

Been putting out food and water for cats in the evenings for years now, even a feral house sort of thing each winter.  But i think the small of our inside animals tells them this is is a 'safe' house.  I see them all the time laying under our cars, or in the yard. Came home today around 7 am to see a cat sitting on my trash can blinking at me. Sort of amusing.   Had one walking on my fence the other day.. normally possums do that, not cats.

One of my cats has a chewing problem. Grooming excessively. Vet says its behavioral, so hes on drugs.  Its helped but not stopped it.   Thought id try some of the bitter apple spray that i use on the dogs.  Few sprays and rub it into the fur. 

Advice: be sure to wash your hands afterwards, before you eat a sandwich. 

Im sure it smells too, but since i cant smell, wouldn't notice the difference.

I guess ill have to turn in my man-card then.

Replacing our feral cat house i made out of some Rubbermaids, with a wooden one tonight.  

So i have a cat that is now chewing his fur off.

Finally got into the vet, took almost 3 weeks.  "well, its not fleas, so we suspect either behavioral or food allergy" Trying to manage special diet for more than one cat will be a major ordeal, so we are starting with behavioral. via a drug..  Kitty prozac in effect.

So another dog story ( hey, we dont have a room for dogs yet :) )

My GSD is 2.5 years old.  At 8 months or so she went to school for 2 weeks, and then we did training together for a while.   The school has a once a week daycare, which she went to for over a year until they ran low on staffing so its on hiatus :(   She loves going there..  and i know misses it.   But one of the 'things' they do is have 'social', which we never did except while acting going to classes.  its only about 30 mins of time, and its an hour round trip so we skipped it.  But since no day care we started going.

What they do is after group class they have everyone stand around the sides of the main room with their dogs, then ex-trainees ( like us ) come in and join the room.   All the dogs are released at once and everyone walks around the room in a circle, which is supposed to prevent the dogs from focusing on anything other than play and prevent arguments. Dogs run around in the middle, and out to the people then back in the mosh pit. rinse repeat.  Its actually pretty cool, they get to interact, learn to be with other dogs, and strangers.  All while being supervised. Of course you walk for 20+ minutes in a circle, so you get a work out too :)  

However, in my case i noticed mine now spends most of her time walking beside me, not with the others. Sure, some play but mostly being obedient beside me. ( during training she was more like the others, more mosh pit then with me, until she got tired then woudl find me and walk beside me ) Last 2 times, every so often she would quickly turn in front of me, like shes herding me. She is a GSD, and her genetics are starting to show as she ages, so i didnt think too much about it.  Tonight i watched more closely, and no, that isn't what is happening, I noticed that any time several dogs were heading my way, she would get in front and nudge me out of their way..   shes protecting me.. 

I'm sure for most people, 'eh, so what, its a dog and they do stuff like that' but i think its kind of neat.  I have had several dogs over my lifespan, and none were like this dog. My dogs have all been super loyal, and great friends, but shes more of a partner.. its 'different'. 

ok i'm done boring people for the evening :) 

Dogs tend to do that too. They have limited ability to tell us something and get our attention.     Anything really far out in left field is most often a cry for help.

Mine were normally much older before they got those sorts of problems  15+

she's probably like stage 3 or 4, so we're just trying to keep her as comfortable as we can.

Might want to get her checked out.  Many will start doing that then they have things like bladder infections.  They really dont have any other way to tell you they hurt.

So cat food is pretty low around here. Both wet and dry..  

That is pretty much what we did the last time we had an elderly cat with that issue. She would start peeing in certain areas ( still incorrect ) so we just put pads there. She was perhaps 15 or so. i forget now.

Here is what we do... 

We get those pet training pads, and put them down where ever the new spot is. It is a little expensive, but it is easier to clean up - and if you keep on top of it - it helps mitigate the inconvenience. You can get them in bulk at PetSmart.

Maybe talk to a Vet if the cat is *somewhat* elderly to see if there is something wrong that can be fixed. With very elderly cats - it has inevitably been a sign for me that our time together is very near its end. Cats tend to be fastidious and creatures of habit. If one or both of those conditions change - it is almost always a sign of an underlying condition.

You know, there was something wrong with the eye on our cat, too. A scratched iris or something. The vet who discovered it told us, "they almost inevitably develop eye cancer that is inoperable from this injury."

We used to have a tux. She actually had white fur underneath with black tips. She was a great cat. This picture made me miss her. We "stole" her from the neighbors across the street who ran the boarding house. 

The neighbor came to me a couple days before we left and said, "you're taking the black cat when you go to Ohio, right?"

I have never had any 'bad' cats.. but the ones that i bonded with the most were my Siamese. They are more like little fuzzy dogs.

If you want big, look into a Savannah, tho i hear they mark territory like they do in the wild.  But you wont get find any of those at the local shelter to rescue. 

It is good the tests are negative,I hope you find the source of the issue.

I am sorry to hear that.  People often say that they would like to be able to understand their pet and say "I love you" to it.  I would be happier if they could tell you they don't feel well and you could tell them you are trying to help them.

They take the pet from your car and return it to the car.   So your wife wont really know what went on inside.

The vet has been sending me email telling me about changes in how visits are handled at the office.  A week ago they said the human will stay in the car, a vet tech will come to the car, and take the pet inside for the visit.  The doctor will call the person cell phone and discuss everything.

Earlier this week they said they will do video visits.   

I have had a phone call visit with one of my doctors but not a video call.  I don't know how this would work for a pet.  Usually a pet needs something or the doctor has to examine them hands on to see what is wrong.

My last cat had his morphine in a syringe. This medication lasts 24 hours so I imagine it is a buffered pill, releases a little as it makes its way through his system.  He doesn't seem like he is in pain and if I do give it to him he is very lethargic.  You can not tell if he is lethargic because of the pain pill or because he doesn't feel well.

I thought things were improving but he seemed to slow down on Sunday, I usually check his litterbox once a day so I don't know if he is using it less.  If there isn't something in the box Monday morning I will have to bring him back to the vet.

Cats know when you are trying to give them medication.  They sense it and hide.

He has three meds, one is a pill the doctor said I can open the capsule and sprinkle the contents in his food, that is easy. The antibiotic is liquid in a dropper and isn't all that hard to get in him.  He keeps his mouth shut but he had a tooth extracted so if I can get the tip of the dropper in the hole he will open his mouth and then I can squirt the dropper in the back of his mouth.  The last pill is pain meds, it lasts 24 hours, it is small but nearly impossible to get in him.  Luckily he doesn't seem to be in too much pain, he is pretty happy.  That med makes him very lethargic for 24 hours and if he doesn't need it I am not going to put either of us through the trauma of trying to administer it.  

The antibiotic does give him diarrhea, I believe he has two more days (Monday) until the antibiotic it is done but it might be until Wednesday.

Otherwise he is fine, happy, sweet cat.

Ours also do the thing with the subdued behaviour which tends to last for a day, maybe two. They also get regular health checks. 

My cat was sick yesterday afternoon and night.  He kept going to the litter box but not doing anything, he did throw up.

I took him to the vet today, he hasn't urinated in a while, when the doctor was feeling him he urinated all over the vets table so the vet grabbed a sample.  They said the cat is in good shape, his white count is slightly elevated but not bad. The vet put him on antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory and some pain meds. 

Our cat was fine with it, he was older so he spent the last years of his life indoors, eventually he did get lymphoma cancer which is common with FIV cats.  

Between foxes, coyotes and FIV I don't let the cat out.  

My last cat would be out all night, come in for breakfast, eat just a little, go back out to go to the bathroom and then come back in to eat some more.

Dogs are easy, put the pill in some peanut butter.  It helps the dogs don't let the food touch their mouth when they eat. It helps they have a larger mouth.

Cats are not as easy.

"No running, jumping or access to stairs" He took care of all three of those the moment I opened the door to the crate.

I can't get near him unless I lay on the floor.  I would never be able to hold his mouth open to get a pill in him.  I tried putting it in his food but he isn't eating today.

"Oh no, don't jump on the bed!", cat runs the other direction and jumps on the higher window perch.

I had an outdoor cat and didn't have a litter box.  I moved kept the cat indoor for a while, when it returned to being an outdoor cat it came inside of the litter box.

I had to torment my cat yesterday, he hates the crate, he hates car rides so I put him in both and took him to the vet to get a teeth cleaning and a tooth extracted.  I need to give him pain meds, a single dose lasts 24 hours, and he is feeling very good.

I didn't know they had any meds that lasted 24 hours.  His eyes are dilated and he is just hanging out.

WHY? WHY? WHY does a cat standing on a hardwood floor run to the carpet to projectile vomit?

I just completed my annual "workplace sexual harassment training".

Apparently it wasn't an exclusive arrangement.  And although you know this, I'm not sure if I've posted it ... after 19 years living there, I figured out how all the mice had been getting in, on the day we moved out.  In our current home, I don't think they're "getting in" so much as one cat is bringing them in to use as interactive toys.

There are little things that remind us of pets we lost.  Baker (the new cat) and I are still getting acquainted we almost have each other figured out but he isn't the same as Ringo (the old cat).  Today something happened that made me miss Ringo.  Ringo would run down the stairs and on the second step he used to hop over the final step and on to the main floor.  It was always a funny thing he did, and it made me smile each time. It was as if the bottom step had to be avoided. This morning for the first time Baker ran down the steps as I walked down the stairs. I was expecting the little hop at the bottom and it didn't happen, it made me very sad not to see it. I miss Ringo very much.

Yeah, one of mine does that too - I even had to "baby-proof" the bathroom door!  Luckily, all my external doors have deadbolts and he hasn't figured those out yet (and probably isn't quite strong enough to manipulate them)

Good idea.  I haven't tried the vacuum with the new cat. 

This cat knows how to open doors, no wonder he got out the last time.  He opened a closet door that doesn't latch.  He has opened several bathroom and kitchen cabinets and he has opened a door on the china cabinet that has a magnetic latch.  He knows how to open doors.

My other cat wouldn't care, he was so cool about everything.  He didn't give a damn about the vacuum cleaner, unless you hit is chair with the vacuum cleaner, then he was more miffed that you bothered him.  He would look up at you, "really?" and then jump down and go to another room.

He is still skittish but seems to be coming around.  You could walk out of the room and back in the room. his pupils dilate and he stares at you nervously.  He was spending a lot of time under the couch and now is spending more time with the humans.  He started playing with his toys and brought a cat toy into the bed this morning.

Back at the end of May I adopted a new cat from one of the Human Societies in the country.  Not the local human society,  I saw the cat at Pet Smart and picked him up through a different facility.  About two days after we got him he managed to get the screen door open and made it out.  We looked all over, put up flyers, used the local facebook (yes) page for lost animals.  No luck.  Threel people said they saw the cat in this one neighborhood, no one captured him or called animal control.  This neighborhood was about a mile away, across a creek, across railroad tracks and across a freeway.  It could have crossed bridges and made it to that neighborhood but I didn't think so, the only reason I  kept looking was because three people said they saw it.  However cats are cats and unless it is out in the open you are not going to see a cat.  

We have fields and woods all around the neighborhood, a lot of foxes and other predatory animals. There is a neighborhood dog that was known for attacking other dogs.  After six months I gave up hope and figured he was gone.  We had some very cold weather the past few weeks and didn't think he would survive.  

I get a call this morning from the pet microchip company, the cat had been found and animal control had brought him in to the local human society.

He was fat and his fur seemed well taken care of.  I am sure someone was feeding him.  

So we have the cat back and microchips do work.

There are some very weird sounds coming out of my pussy right now.

Our favorite neighbor cat got hit by a car this weekend. We found him on the side of the road this morning while taking the kids to the bus stop.

He was really friendly. Constantly came over to meow and get petted. He was taken care of by our non-asshole neighbors, who had taken him in a few years ago when he appeared in the area as a stray.

I would have preferred if the cat had been spared and the asshole neighbors got hit by a car. Statistically speaking, the assailant was speeding.

Sorry to hear about the kitty, IG.  Not easy finding a cat like that even a non-ninja one.  Kids doing ok?

My sister's dog passed away August of 2014, this past July she got herself a puppy, avery nice, very sweet dog.  As with most dogs she doesn't like the vacuum cleaner. She is very skittish, if a mouse farts in Idaho the dog jumps back.  Oddly enough the dog is very curious about leaf blowers.

Ringo passed away today.  

The hardest part for me was that the vets, the vet techs, and the vet staff locally and at Cornell kept saying what a wonderful sweet and well behaved cat he was and thinking he doesn't have much longer.  I know what a great cat he was, he was my cat.

He was overnight at Cornell the past few days and his condition was much worse. I elected to have him put asleep, he hates car rides and didn't want to traumatize him anymore for the trip home.  I brought his body back home for the family to see.  I debated if I was going to bury him in the backyard or have him cremated, in the end I decided that I did not want to dig a hole, and I did not want to put him in it.  When I took him to the local vet for the cremation, one of the techs said, "Oh no, this is Ringo?  He is a legend here because he is so well behaved and sweet."
So I guess he was an above average well behaved cat.

I was not his original caretaker, he bonded with me and I took over.  He lived 14 years, and with me for the past 10 years.  I have no idea what she did to make him not like her. He was a wonderful cat that seemed to love everyone and everyone loved him.

This sounds expensive.  A couple of years ago we went down a similar road, and over $3,000 later the stupid cat died anyway.

So it's been a bit of time since that post ... how's the cat doing?

It seems that they are, at least the males, rather stinky. Territorial. They "spray" - stinky.

Growing up with a cat that liked to hunt, we would often find items left in the yard....

beaks and feet.

When we jacked up the porch, we had to remove the steps.  We then fully realized the full carnage wrought by a former alley cat.  Squirrels, rabbits, ducks, and even a Canadian goose skeleton.

On another note.  The last remaining cat I had I boarded at the in-laws farm while out on a camping vacation.  I brought food up for the cat to eat, but he never ate any of it, and mostly hung out in the basement.  They never did figure out what he ate that week :-)   I have a guess.

I've heard that mice are put off by the scent of cat dander, so just having a cat in the house for a while can solve your mouse problem even if the car doesn't do anything about the mice.

They usually puke while awake and they try to get outside. They never puked on furniture (or themselves), mostly on a place on the ground where it is easy to clean away.

dothebart: You might have a point with the towel, although I was only using kitchen wipe paper. But this cat came from an animal shelter and she lost an eye due to an infection when she was a kitten. She does not like hands moving towards her at all. The additional paper might have triggered some evil memories from the past.

Cats puke.

It is almost as if it is a fun thing for them (and who knows - it just may so be).

It is almost never something to cause concern. And certainly the events you described being 9 to 10 months apart are in that category (better than being in that dogegory).

Cat puked again in her sleep last night. Stupid thing.

Last time she did that was on the end of last winter, when she was in her "crows nest" under the ceiling in the middle of the night. I woke up to retching noises, climbed on a chair, looked into her nest and saw her surrounded by puke. This must have been the time she mentally woke up, and although pavlovian conditioning does not apply to wake cats, it applies to sleepy cats. She immediately understood that I must have puked on her and she started complaining. She did not get up, even while I was removing the puke. Must have been pretty drowsy/sleepy. But afterwards, she had a deep distrust for me all through the summer. She would flee from me, always keep a safe distance. Started to get better now that it begins to get cold outside again and she needs to stay inside more often.

Will take her to the doctor soon.

well, while the cat hase a tiny bread basket repository full of mice etc. we have a game which works without:

Paw tipping.

cat is on the arm-chair - relaxed. I aproach it, and use the forefinger from my fist, to tip her best accessible forepaw.

now the game has started. each of us is to hunt paw/finger and tip it. If she 's awake enough, she usually wins. If not, I do ;-)

Lilly actualy enjoys it that much that she purrs.

Once she starts engaging claws, I open my fist - bam - 5 enemies ;) usually one of us then goes away - game over.
