Actually, the reason why Netflix might not purchase Warner is because Skydance is performing an hostile takeover through Paramount, for a higher price. The fun part is it seems Paramount/Skydance's offer has been on the table for a while, Warner just ignored it and went with Netflix, which is highly suspicious and would make the board at Warner liable for missmanaging the investor's funds.

They'll allow tiny Linux/Android sticks to exist as long as it represents a marginal percentage of the overall population. If it ever caught massive appeal and adoption - they would crush it in a second. 

They won't - it is too difficult for people. What you lose site of being a part of a community like this, despite our disagreements - is that we're in the very top super-minority of intellects. We're not just "above average". We're especially bright. 
Not necessarily geniuses of industry who will leverage our unique perspectives into Bill Gates wealth - but smart enough to see past most subterfuge.

It is cheesy 70s TV stuff - especially compared to the movies. A lot of FORMULA to the episodes, and ham-fisted telegraphed "messaging," that was handled somewhat more subtly (for the time) in the movies. 

But... you know me and the retro thing - I kind of like how it is a lens into where our collective mind was at that time in our history. There is almost a naivety to it that is... sentimental? 

So last night i went with streaming from jellyfin to avoid the commercials ( but i lose the closed captions, which i like so i don't need to wear earbuds to avoid blasting the TV in the evening ).  Seems like most everything they have i like, especially my odd-ball music taste. i wonder who runs that outfit ( lol )

Ok, so joking aside. Was poking around for something. Ran across 'how to build a human'.  I was a fan of the short lived series "humans" ( basically AI stuff. but was low key and i thought done really well. But they cut it off early.. **ers ) and i though this was a 'behind the scenes' sort of affair so just shelved it "for later".    Man, was i wrong, it was actually the main actress going out and building a AI powered robot clone of herself ( from the waist up ).  They went thru all the tech, bla bla.  Amazing stuff.   And then if you consider it was done in 2016.. its even more amazing.

I downloaded a torrent of the Planet of the Apes - the TV series, and I'm watching that. It was 1974... I was too young - but saw some of the episodes. They scared me when I was a kid.

Forgot to mention it.. but a few weeks ago, was bored, pushing buttons and seeing what might be out there.  I think it was Netflix. "hmm quantum leap, its been a while".  Started watching "who the hell is this.. what the F is going on..  this isn't right" oh.. they rebooted it. No thanks.  "off"

Was bored, and off this week.  i tried watching prime last night with the dogs last night.  They now have both product commercials and amazon commercials run at the same time..   ill pass. And really Amazon? im paying as it is, what a scam. Aside from commercials being freaking stupid these days, now you get an Amazon popup ON the add, of an ad... f-that.   AND not just at start up, but like regular TV, all thru the program.  Back in my day, commercials, while annoying that they cut out your show  too often, at least were not ignorant.   

Tho i may download the show to watch, it seemed interesting.  Talking about old classified documents and stuff that have been declassified in recent years. Not real conspiracy stuff (well, at the time they would have been ), but things that were hidden from us over the decades that are surprising.   First episode was about us losing atomic bombs back during the cold war ( plane crashes, etc , not 'weirdo stuff', stuff happens.. expected ), but that some were never recovered. They still out there, sitting.. Metal housing material dissolving.  Will be a bad scene once they collapse and release the uranium into the local areas.

At some point they stopped writing shows that they thought viewers would like, and started writing "what they ought to be watching."

That's how you get 500 channels of crap, because there's nothing worth watching unless you have the values of a Hollywood wacko.

I think its a combination of 2 things:

1 - They simply have run out of ideas for content. Those days are long behind us.

2 - They keep trying to recycle old ideas and wokeify them.

If they didn't do number 2, a few recycles or extensions would be ok if care was taken. Sometimes, you can do them better the 2nd time around ( like BSG for example. ) But, its easy to screw it up too, even with good intent.

I think they kept creating spinoff channels (like VH-1) and saying that's where they'd focus more on music videos, but over time even the spinoff channels moved towards airing round-the-clock crapola. Eventually, once it became inexpensive to have a lot of channels, they created a few that were dedicated to music videos. Those are the ones they are now discontinuing.

Honestly, most of what's on television now (broadcast, cable, satellite) is utter garbage. The entire industry has descended into an abyss of craptasticity and is unnecessarily prolonging its own death.

I thought that was true decades ago.  Much like SNL, it died long long ago.

Ah, the old "TV Tax" ... a relic of the broadcast age.  Apparently in Englandistan you can now sign a declaration that you don't watch broadcast TV and they will waive the tax.  Really though, multichannel television in general is obsolete and it should all be defunded globally.

People say broadcast television, cable/satellite, etc is being killed off by streaming services, but that is only part of it. Although I think it would still decline eventually, cable/satellite television would currently be much more popular than it is if its programming had not become utter garbage.

I had the tv on for a few minutes, before i switched it over to stuff i have saved for the cats to watch. I forget the streaming service since i have several on there ( android ), but they were touting "black TV" and showing things like the Jeffersons and Sanford and Son. ( among some others )

It's a multi-season TV series about Jesus and his disciples. As a historical fiction, they play a little with the timeline. (How else could they get a cliffhanger ending at the end of each season?)

Season 6 starts filming soon after season 5 starts in theaters. Unlike past seasons, Amazon Prime Video gets a 90 day exclusive window from the time it's in theaters until it drops into the app. (It's called "The Chosen" app from the Come and See Foundation.)

Yeah, that was a thing ... during the last few years of physical media before everything went to streaming, it became common to manufacture discs with the DVD format of a movie on one side and the Blu-Ray format on the other side.  The title would be printed in the center hub area of the disc.

( since most of us could not tolerate watching, he takes it for the team ).  He is entertaining to watch, especially when he brings out Professor Dinkles, which has been too long now..  This last episode review however i paid more attention, and somewhat regret it..  the show has got so bad i dont even have the words.

So once again moving my media files around. ( due to a stupid limitation in nextcloud.. not one most people would care about, but of course im different so it bit me in the ass )

Noticed i had some x-files ripped. But just a couple. 

Sooo do i dig out my DVDs and rip them ( perhaps 4 years worth i cafe about )  or delete the few files and just use spinny disks?  Its not like i watch them often.. 

Ooooh.  Ryan Coogler of Disney.  Is it going to continue featuring the same Gillian Anderson who recently wore a dress covered in vaginas to broadcast her pro-abortion views at a gala?  It's difficult to think of any good way for X Files to be rebooted with our current perception of the FBI.

I scanned teh interwebz for pundits talking about it.  The pro-reboot and anti-reboot people are both saying the same thing: that it's [ good | bad ] because in the current year, conspiracy theories have turned out to be [ true | "believed by people I don't like" ].

You know what I would have done instead?  A fresh retelling of the story where Smoking Man was the protagonist, where the story explains the things he knew and that he really was trying to protect everyone.  Sort of the same way Winnie Holzman's "Wicked" told L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz" from the witch's wide of the story.

This is cool. Indexes, grabs info .. previews.  and a pretty web interface ( so i can add a button to the chromium start page and be consistent )

Gave up on elec, kodi, android TV, regular android, bla bla bla.

Tried ChromeOS flex.. had it running and working, then found out there is no way to disable login requirements on power up anymore. soooooo that was out. Not going to want to futz with that every time.

Now its just generic Linux.. auto login.. auto start chromium ( i thought about FF at first, but no GPU drivers.. ).. 5 buttons on the home screen to go to websites to watch TV ( pluto, tubi, netflix, YT and amazon ).  Including ad blocker for YT. if that dies this spring, ill do something at DNS level if i can.   Running on a 100 dollar micro-pc thing that isn't much bigger than the android TV its replacing, and smaller than some android boxes i have had in the past.  ( has a m.2 slot, so no need for external drive/network NAS.. ) Not a speed demon by any means, but its just doing video and music..  so more than enough.

Not yet decided on how i want to handle local video/music files, but wife wont use use that anyway, so may just stick with vlc. 

Oh and that funky 3rd party remote i was talking about..  sort of neat actually.    Found out today that it has a "mouse like function", where if you wave the thing around in the air, its like moving a mouse around.  Not a laser like pointer, just tracking movements with some sort of motion detector i guess. Much better than pushing buttons to make it move.   ( but its got buttons too.. )

And no, not kiosk mode, i wanted the login accounts ( like for netflix ) to be saved in the browser. Cant do that in kiosk mode.  

And yes, i could have stick with the old box, basically ignore the crappy new interface after that  'upgrade' to GoogleTV, and just cast from my phone, since its a licensed chromecast receiver.. but that is one more device id have to screw with and deal with battery charging, etc.. .. so no.

Im really a cat person but dogs are cool. ( always have had both since i was a little kid ). Parrots are cool too.   My Nanday Conure was like a cat with wings in personality. 

Odd there is no free feed. Nothing on YT or similar ?

So i guess we are getting close to having David Tenant as the doctor again for a few episodes.  While i do like him as a doctor and was one of the better ones, i worry about the writing. It may suck. Nice to have Donna back too. But.. they are not bring back Billie as Rose, and instead some other totally different actor. Um no. Cant get Billie, just skip the character. 

AND of course he is going to transition ( pun totally intended here ) into the new doctor after a couple of shows.

Sigh. 

And while many will disagree, i wish Capaldi had taken the job, he would have been in some of the greatest written episodes, but tenant got them instead. He could have been one of the greats, but no.. he turned down the job the first time, and by the time they asked again, the writing sucked and it was on the cusp of collapse into wokeness.   Sure David did well with them and the are some of the best episodes out there, but peter woudl have done it 100x better. 

My biggest beef about the collapse is not that they had a female doctor ( female timelords existed.. even in classic who , of course they did. one was even a companion for a while.. ), or even the preaching ( tho id ignore it ), but you dont change an established character to do it. its the freaking timelords, just retire Doctor back on earth with Donna or something, insert a new timelord with a new direction, and move on.  Even Missy, which did an ok job as a character, but having to make her the master, why? Just grab a new person from the pool and move on.  Really, i was against people like Matt smith too. Doctor was an old crotchety grandfather figure, not a kid. Even Tenant, too young.

Ok random aimless rant over.  I guess ill just cross my fingers and wait for the reviews.

It's far too soon for Disney to make another movie about discrimination (or racism) because they did that fairly recently with Zootopia.  Zootopia was good and didn't have any of that feminist social wartard bullshit in it.

Funny thing is in the original there WAS a lot of 'statements' and such.  But it was back when it wasn't shoved in your face and entertainment was more important.

Back in the early 90s UPN came out with a show called "nowhere man", starring a long haired Bruce Greenwood. ( i hear they crested the show details around him, instead of molding him into the show. ) The entire story is not important, but the basic premise is that a dude unknowingly, and innocently, did something not accepted by 'the man' and then 'the system' came after him, flipping his life upside down. Came after him covertly, physiologically, and physically.  Basically the show revolved him avoiding them winning and trying to find out what the hell was going on. Sort of like the Millennium shadow group in Millennium. Also a show everyone should watch. 

it was a GREAT show and everyone should watch it. Even tho it got killed after season one, which upset EVERYONE ( almost as much as when caprica was canceled, or Farscape ),  the basic premise was explained of what was going on. So while you had a cliff hanger, it wasn't a total dead end to the show ( sort of like 'john doe' was ).. There was a fan club out on Usenet ( wait, wistful nostalgia ? ) and of course after the show died, the group sort of quieted down. 

A bit later ( cant member exact timing now. but not long, perhaps a year ) a guy appeared.  "Hey i work for UPN and i managed to get some of the original films. i'm going to make DVDs of what i have .. anyone interested "   of course no one believed him. But hey, it bought the channel back ti life. so whatever, we can play along, right? 

Over time he started posting some behind the scenes images and stuff that no one would have other than someone at the studios. Later he offered images like 'hey, how do you think this menu looks'.  And promo materials he created, all extremely professional.  He also started getting more paranoid that 'they' were on to him and had to hurry.  Most of us blew that off as being 'in theme' but, it got worse and worse and it sounded believable that he was going to lose his job.  About a year or so in " hey, i did it, anyone want to buy some " and he sold a few copies to the group.  I had to pass, he wanted way to much for me at the time, it was the dark times so food and lights were more important.  

They were legit disks, people got them, then he made some comment about 'they figured it out" and was never seen again.

Move to about a year later..   UPN put out a DVD set.. with those menus.. same layout, same promotional materials. ( but 1/2 the price, which i could barely afford. figured i better do it now, i wont get a 3rd chance on something like this )  Ya, we were duped, we fell for it and UPN, well, they sort of took advantage of the fan base. BUT, we did get something out of it, and it was fun, so there was no hard feelings.  They could have just came out and told us the truth and got even more input. But it was still a fun time. 

Happened to run across a segment of a Fox news show on YT.  They were making fun of Jeep Ducking.  One of them drives a freaking Bronco, he does not even get the right to say the word Jeep. ( a new Bronco, not when they were still respected )

F-those people. I never will even accidentally watch anything of theirs again. I hope they implode and everyone on staff ends up in a homeless camp in California eating bugs.

Purists may not like it, but Season 3 of Picard at least start out ok. Felt sort of like a modern TNG. Darker, visually noisy, but it is 2023

I thought it was all funded by donors ( of course most are those huge donors/endowment funds trying to manipulate the media, but still donor )

 In the US we are forced to pay for PBS through tax dollars, whether we own a receiver or not.

If i have to replace my TV, i'm leaning towards a projector or a 'monitor' if i run into issues finding a real TV. We dont have a TV tax here, but it would get around the smart-problem. 

But not sure how well a projector would work for me.  I know i have limited success when i have used them at the office.  Always a sub-par experience, but they were cheaper quality.. older boat-anchor style.  ( we actually swapped them all out for 50" monitors last year )

I remember reports of the 'TV cops' driving around in vans looking for unapproved sets...    But I assume a smart TV would be taxed too since they advertise them as "TV"

There is a number of countries where the use of a regular TV set is taxed. Maybe people is just kicking the TV sets out in order not to pay the tax and watch shows over the Internet instead...

i dont either, unless there is some sort of local weather issue going on.  ( assuming my antenna didnt blow away too :) )

I rarely stream. Normally what i watch comes off stored files from a dedicated generic 'media box'. ( used to be DVD but now that drive space is cheap they are all ripped ) If i stream, i can do it via the dedicated box, which is not compromised, and easily replaceable when updates stop, or it catches on fire. 

i just dont want my TV on internet, i dont want the overhead of apps just to watch something, ( i cant imagine all the ads if online, and warnings if not  ) and dont want the additional points of failure. Its like those silly all-in-one PCs..  one little component dies, the entire thing, including your 'monitor' is gone. I could afford buying new ones due to minor failures, but its the principle of it.

I dont want internet on my thermostat, my door knob, my fridge, or my freaking car either.  No assistants, no 100" monitor on my dash.. just some dials for how fast i'm going, and a volume knob for my stereo, not a touch screen with 3 menus deep. 

I'm even ok with manual windows... ( tho i guess in the little car, i cant safely reach the other side while driving due to the center console being there, so power is nice, but id be ok without it too )

There were things that constantly didn't make technological sense from the perspective of an average person's understanding. I've been married for 28 years. A long time ago I realized that I have higher expectations that the typical movie-goer. 

I watched Westworld with my wife... and she was going... "Well, that is just stupid bullshit." 

When someone with a basic knowledge/information worker relationship with technology is going, "why would they do THAT with a database?" 

It is a basic failure. It is people who don't understand the *basics* of technology writing technology in fiction so that it doesn't even fool non-nerds. And it happened a dozen times in Westworld.

From a technology angle - there were constantly things that didn't make TECHNOLOGICAL sense. Not just as a nitpicking nerd - but just as someone willing to go, "Wait a second... I thought they had established that..."

See, I can't even remember their names. Watched the entire series. 

The small group that survived wasn't... I dunno - they weren't plausibly survivable. 

The character that Delores became - the writer... that was another problem. They died, they came back, as hosts, as AI, they were the embodiment of evil, of wrath, of petty vengeance, then they were the hero, then they were black, then they were white, then they were bisexual, then they were straight... 

I think they were trying to get a message across with a lot of that - but mostly the message was "It doesn't matter". 


By the end of the series, the only character I was invested in was the cowboy guy billionaire. Everyone else was NOT who they started off as, and so it didn't matter who they were now, what body they were inhabiting, what their motives had evolved into.

Not all of humanity died out, and i think that is where they were going in season 5.  Let the park run its course and integrate the people left in to the results.  But we will never know. But, they made it a point that were still humans outside their control in one of the final scenes so it had to be for a reason.   I heard that the plan was for 5 seasons only.. so it would have been closure of the story line.

I do agree season 3 went off the rails. 'wtf is this'..    Sure, you needed it to understand the starting point of 4 and the characters, but man it was dumb, and painful to watch.  I kept hoping they would pull it out of the pit.. but no, they just kept digging..

Now im not not saying season 4 was *great* but it was watchable again, and it seemed like they had a plan. I'm ok with watchable, not everything can be spectacular.

I do think 1 was great and will be a long term classic.  Going into this, I expected trash, its how things go these days with destruction of classic franchises. But they did the original justice, and then some.  I'm glad i gave it a shot.  

Season 2 to me was 'eh, ok' not bad, not great but watchable.  With what the did for 1, I was curious how they were going to adapt the original followup movie, which was also 'eh, ok, its um, ok'. (  seems that so many people have forgot it even existed ) so i guess they did it justice by not overshadowing it :)

The only good TV I see nowadays are old shows from years ago which are still casted for some reason.

Suffices to say my multimedia consumption nowadays consists on DVDs with shows created more than 40 years before I was born, because most recent stuff is so damn bad.

Commercial advertisements are so transparent it should feel *offensive* to the people they are telegraphing their virtue to. 

It is a terrible time to be a straight, white, able-bodied white male in the Commercial Actor business. 

havent watched a minute of it in literally years, over a decade.  i have no clue who the popular stars are or hollywood story lines. i only see snippets on various websites, meme aggregators (aka news aggregators). haven't watched a commercial at all, when they are forced on me i always punch out. never give a criminal a second of your time. never give a deluded person's ideas a second thought of legitimacy. and now, the medical community is on that same list. once on my list, marked for life. you have to walk on water to get off my list.

Again, not sure if I am just old and grumpy, but it seems like increasingly everything eventually gets around to injecting the woke messaging into its story line. It *is* refreshing when a show just tells me a story and doesn't blatantly push something about sexism, racism, xenophobia or homophobia on me in its plot line - or otherwise implies that if we don't become a globalist nation sharing the spotlight with some other nation, the world is going to decline into an environmental wasteland. 

I get sick of the constant indoctrination of modern film. What would be SUBVERSIVE to expectations now would be a show about a heterosexual, white couple raising their children to be model citizens while not being offended or excluding anyone else and also not oppressing anyone in their own pursuit of success and happiness. :)

I feel like not having remote administration capabilities enabled narrows the footprint for attack on my network. If someone external can GET remote access to my administration tools - there probably isn't anything *I* am going to be able to do to stop them, anyhow - but if *I* don't have them, it is going to be harder for *them* to get access, too. 

TV is just horrible now. I can't tell if I'm just old, or if everything is shit. My wife really likes us to hang out and watch TV... and for the most part, it is torture. To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of it, not since I was about 14 - but in the last 20 years, it has taken a nosedive. 

Its one reason i have guacamole on a VM. i can get a shell or i can start up another VM manually and grab a remote desktop, if needed. It runs on local storage not NAS, so if the NAS pukes, i can still get in and troubleshoot.  And my battery backup is only hooked to one node, and the NAS.. extend its life a bit during power outage. 

And speaking of BBS issues, i was in mine the other day, and the admin account was logged in..so i deleted the entire VM..  Will rebuild it late. Unsure how they figured out a random password.. or if it was some sort of glitch in reporting, but either way, not worth the risk.

And glad to hear you are well, tho seems like you went thru some pain and suffering :( 

Tho back OnTopic to TV: i think this 3 day weekend i need to finish watching strange new worlds.  its not a bad show. Not great, but watchable and 'feels' like trek.

I realized on the third day of a 2 week vacation, so not only did power go down for the 1st time since I began running it, but it went down almost *immediately* once Elvis had left the building. 

I had my wife bring it back up when she got back home a week later - while I was in lock-down in Sacramento - but when it didn't come up, I realized that Proxmox isn't set to autostart the VM instance on a reboot - I have to go in and turn it on manually. 

And I didn't want to walk my wife through connecting to Proxmox, logging in as root, finding the right VM and starting it up, remotely. :) I guess I could have had her start one of my computers and done a Team Viewer remote session into it and done it myself. I guess I should have thought of that. Heh. 

Anyhow, the world survived 2 weeks without The Sanitarium - and it isn't like it decreased traffic. :)

Here is my take on Disney+

After watching the Mandalorian and Loki... and catching up on some MCU movies I watched in-flight but didn't finish - I haven't found anything on it worth the subscription price. 

As for my absence...

Wife changed jobs, broke my shoulder on a trip to New Mexico, flew out to Cleveland to meet my Nephew from Europe in Cleveland and caught Covid between there and Sacramento... ended up having to drive the rental from Sacramento back to Phoenix... 

Interesting thing, the Sanitarium went down with a power outage shortly after I left for Cleveland. It is the first power outage that I've had since I moved to Arizona that was enough to reset clocks and take down running PCs. Therefore, I do not have a UPS on the server. 

I intentionally do not have remote administration exposed to the public network. My wife was also out of town. When she got back, I had her power it all back up, but I did not realize I do not have the VM config

Ah, another thing about the Mandalorian, that once I saw, I couldn't unsee... 

It is basically a "Let's Play" walkthru video-game play video. 


The Mandalorian has an encounter, he gets into a battle, at the end of the battle, he takes up a quest. He returns to a key person - who gives him a goal, that will help further his question. He goes and pursues that goal. There is a boss at the end he has to defeat to get the goal. Once he has the goal, he returns to the key NPC, who tells him that the goal requires another step, and he needs to find another key NPC in order to find where that goal is and how to achieve it. 

Each episode, wash-rinse-repeat through a series of NPCs and goals, sometimes going back to one of the original NPCs, but always resulting in a next goal required to finish the overall quest. 

In an absolutely linear fashion. It is a video game where you can just sit back and watch and don't have to slough your way through the level to get

Oh, with one caveat: I'm done with Star Wars. 

Bogus. Westworld canceled. Wont be allowed to wrap up the story as planned.

They had just got back on track 

( and i figured out the ending to season 4. i had missed a key part, now it makes sense )

I used to buy Mad Magazine to read the latest movie parodies so I would have an IDEA of what the plot was in the actual movie when my friends would talk about it in school. 

Caused a few really weird conversations when the satire really veered off from the actual movie plot and I wasn't old enough to recognize it... I distinctly remember getting caught out once - maybe on JAWS.

I have not watched it all, as it was boring and sort of lost interest, but Solo didnt seem too bad of what i saw.  No, nothing like the first 3, but seemed ok.

Short version is that Chibnall is the guy that is running Dr Who into the ground.   Whittaker is the woman that he brought in to play the 13th doctor, to help destroy the franchise with him, while they preached woke agenda to the fans, who have pretty much abandoned the thing. 

They are bringing back the producer who ran the thing before they set it on fire, and in general did a good job.  There may be no saving it now, but there is at least a chance if he does it right.

Whittaker and Chibnall leave Dr Who.

YAY! Too bad it too late to save the franchise. 

Time for Agents of Shield re-watch.

So going to get a guy at work to watch the 2004 BSG reboot thing ( amazing hes not seen it yet ) and debating on having him watch the miniseries first.  I watched it afterwards ( didnt know it was around until then ) and i think it would have spoiled some of the progression of the main series. 

But i know i think differently than most.

He is certainly my favorite. 

I love my dark, brooding, moody super heroes - but campy 60s Batman is who I grew up on.

Here is the thing... The "90's" graphic novel dark version only exists as an extension of the "80's edgy version".  And as stand alone comics the edgy 80 versions were cool. As graphic novels, they're as cool as your S-NES. All that power wasted. 

But *nothing*... Not 80s "killer" Wolverine - will ever replace the "golden age" of comics, which is where Adam West Batman exists. 

Those were *heroes*. They did what was right.

They were different characters in the books. So room for both in the movies.  i recently sold my dark night leather edition. Not into comics but i came into a bunch some 30 years ago. Took the box down to a local collector late last year.  I guess that superman #1 was worth a few bucks. ( just kidding. Even i know that is valuable as hell )

Better Call Saul has the same problem that a lot of AMC series have. They have irregular seasons that have huge breaks and you end up falling behind or forgetting. AMC is like that really talented, but absent minded and flightly artist you know who gets you excited about something, gets half way through it, then disappears onto some other project... and by the time they come back around, you've lost interest.

I loved Animaniacs ... I was actually not getting my hopes up because comebacks tend to disappoint (Bloom County for example ... the comeback was completely terrible).

The last episode we watched was uneven. It was mostly a pro gun control skit - and it was done with such a weak metaphor that they kind of addressed it in their own meta way, which was kind of the funniest part of the skit. It wasn't terrible - it was more like they didn't really know what to do with it. There were some good highlights, and the metaphor/analogy was easy to ignore. Taken just as a skit with no larger meaning, it wasn't as bad. The idea that they were trying to make a message pulled down the episode overall, not because I disagree with the message, although I do - but because the metaphor didn't work very well. 

Then Thanksgiving happened, and we haven't watched an episode since. Maybe tonight we'll pick it back up. 

The Animaniacs is not a total disaster. Mostly, it was quite good - especially if you go into it wide awake that there are no sacred cows in the current zeitgeist that they're not going to try and tip. 

It'll probably fail because of that, because outrage culture is so pervasive across the spectrum, today. This is why we can no longer have nice things.

I don't understand all this excitement for the 4K televisions, as with early HDTV 4K looks great but the programming still sucks.

I am not much of a TV watching guy. I'd rather be in on the PC, online, too. 

I don't know how it works elsewhere, but in the United States there are negotiations that go on between the networks and the cable/satellite operators.  The networks, which usually operate a number of different channels, get the cable/satellite operators to carry the less popular channels in order to have reasonable prices on the more popular channels.  Most subscribers would rather select individual channels, but that is never offered.  So for your $50-60 channel package (which is over and above the base cost of the cable itself, equipment rental, Internet and telephone service) you usually end up with about a hundred different channels.  You get a bunch of news channels, a bunch of entertainment channels, a bunch of lifestyle channels, a few weather channels, and the channels you would have picked up with your antenna if you had one.

It's generally considered a ripoff at any price, and most people end up just watching their favorite two or three channels anyway.

To make the service more "sticky", most cable operators find a way to make "just Internet" more expensive than a combination Internet/TV/Phone package.

Again, though, I think this will inevitably change.  The growing number of cord cutters, cord shavers, and cord nevers, are creating a market force that at some point will have to be addressed.  Hopefully, it will take the form of network and system operators being forced to offer a-la-carte channel packages.  On the other hand, some future oppressive regime might add fees to Internet services to subsidize television industry pigopolists, much in the same way as the cost of blank cassette tapes once included a fee to subsidize music industry pigopolists.

All I know is that I'm not subsidizing CNN and ESPN hate speech anymore.

What is in a typical tv package that sells for 50-60$?!

We use a combination of Netflix (about 10€/month), Amazon Prime (30€/year or so? not sure) and iTunes (pay per series/movie. currently 35-60€ for a series season, depending on the amount of episodes).

I tried Sky Ticket, but they and Amazon are to stupid to get streaming going with a decent bandwidth. The last GoT season looked like a bad VHS rip filmed off an analog tv and then pressed on a VCD at times.

Holy crap.... We celebrated Thanksgiving a week early, while family was up visiting for "Thanksgiving" someone turned on the Hallmark channel. I don't watch TV, I think the TV was on all day, I would walk into the room and ask "This movie is still be on?"  One of the people staring at the screen would say, "no this is a different movie."  They were all the same idea.

Someone wanted to do something special, make the cranky old person be happy, save some Christmas tradition and fall in love.  It happened every episode.

My wife is currently watching the one movie they have on the Hallmark Channel.

You know the one ... with the somewhat roundabout love story, and the cute kid, the small town, and no major plot complications.  It's the only movie they show, but they've made the same movie hundreds of times.

According to Business Insider, they churn these out in about three weeks with a budget of about $2 million.  And they consistently achieve high ratings (way higher than CNN or ESPN), despite the fact that they don't bother trying to position themselves on social media.

I personally find it too insipid to watch, but I've gotta hand it to them ... they have a winning formula.  People don't want to be force fed the debauchery the big networks are shoveling out, and they turn to Hallmark Channel as an alternative.  Bravo to them.

Some people like SlingTV due to the channels they include in their packages.  DirectTV has a streaming package as well.  That is for live TV.  There is also Hulu for after the fact TV.  Youtube TV, Youtube Red and a couple more I can't remember right now.

For the Americans here, a little insider not so secret secret. While watching the Today show Willard Scott, Al Roker always says, "And here is what is going on in your neck of the woods."  That wasn't just a catch phrase.  Back in the days when things were run from video tape, and the video tape had to get up to speed, that was an IMPORTANT cue for the local station to roll the locally inserted 30 second weather break.  "and here is what is going..." (roll tape) " on in your neck of the woods." Switch from network to local and take video tape.  That phrase was network telling the locals to roll their tape without saying "roll that beautiful bean footage."

I texted a buddy of mine, he suffers from CRS. (Can't Remember Shit)  He said his last few years at the TV station he worked IT and not production but he thought they still white balanced cameras.  He has bad memories of the TV station and is trying to forget as much as possible.

We also discussed the thickness of the camera cable.  There is a lot to a camera cable.  It used to have a lot more signals and I am sure digital has simplified all of that.  The camera's view finder could have several video sources.  The camera's lens which wouldn't need a cable, at least one video feed back from the control room.  Usually a program feed, we would send the video from one of the mixers on the switcher so the camera person could line up the box over the anchor's shoulder.  The camera cable needs to handle video for the teleprompter and any communications between the camera op and the control room.  I think the cable is probably still thick but not as think as it once was.

I am sure Camera Control Units are still used.  Even though the NTSC (Never The Same Color) has been updated no two pieces of equipment is ever the same.  I bet the cameras still have to be tweaked.  I will ask a few friends, but like many of us, we have gotten out of the field.

I am probably a little younger than you folks are, but growing up in the 80s and 90s gave you a feel for how hard motor control can be. Today, everything is computercontrolled, digital and smooth as silk. We had to fix music tapes. Video tapes would degenerate, all the motors wore out, you had to replace rubbers, etc. Today, you only have to worry wether the battery is charged. Kind of boring.

Yes, I worked at a few stations.  I thought we discussed it before after you mentioned you did some TV work. (real men don't pre-view their edits) If you noticed the machine also re-arranged some tapes for quicker accesses later. It was designed well enough to put tapes close to machines that would be open at a later time.  Advanced planning.

The system I first saw was called the Sony BetaCart, holding about 40 five/ten minute betaSP tapes. http://www.montagar.com/~patj/betacart.htm Same basic idea, tape storage, tape transport and side loading VTPs Came with the operators keyboard computer and a "cool" bar code label maker for the machine to read the bar coes on the tapes.  It play back system went down once.... when it did, all hands on deck and a lot of shouting during a commercial break.  I also saw the all digital system freeze once as well. (1998/99)

I worked on a digital Odetics system that could fire off tape decks.  It was in a master control of the cable company I worked for.  I wasn't impressed with this.

I saw another video, one of the first non-linear editors, from 1971!  I didn't think that technology was that old.  This was different though, it stored low quality audio and B&W video on the refrigerator size hard drives.  The editor edited with a light pen, there was an edit list but no time line.  Two monitors, a preview and program monitor.  When the final product was ready the machine took the edit points stored on the non-linear editor, and that played the original tapes from VTRs, and switched all the video sources.  It wasn't pure digital like we know today.

I used an AVID in 1996/97, I was told it cost $80,000.  I remember the apple fanatic trainer was very excited that macs only had ONE button on their mice.  He was very excited about this and repeated how macs only had ONE how simple is that.  Not like those confusing two and three button mice on PCs.    It had 36 gigs of storage.  Four nine gig RAID drives.  Didn't take too long to fill nine gigs in those days.  The hard drives were so slow they needed to break the info onto three drives and the audio was stored on the forth drive.

I remember telling someone that these non-linear video editors will drop down to $250 some day. This person laughed at me.  You can get them cheaper or free on Linux.  Of course you no longer need tape decks, and related hardware.  

I miss the days of Electro-mechanical devices. I have always enjoyed watching them, seeing how they worked, and thought about all the work that went into designing them.

Before everything was stored digitally on a server, TV commercials were played from videotape.  Years ago someone came up with the idea of trying to automate the process.  In the following videos there are examples.  I had always seen/used Sony's model but the idea is the same.  The machine in the video is one of the last models before they moved to digital.

I will try to explain what is going on.  At the top center of the video there are the VTRs (Video Tape Players) There were four or five VTRs with one being a backup unit.  The machine is finding the video tapes it needs to play, grabbing it, and putting it in a tape player.  The system then plays the tape when it needs to.  The tape player ejects the tape, the machine grabs it, puts it back in storage and grabs another tape.  At the end you see it put tapes to the side and a door spins.  This is how new tapes were added and no longer needed tapes were removed.
Before digital this is what was happening during a commercial break. At the end of the video there is some sort of sampled audio, I have no idea what that means.  It ruined the coolness of the video.

Here is an example of a much older model, (1970s?) it only loads two tapes at a time.  That is a two inch thick video tape was and I like how far it had to unroll in order to play the tape. (Your VHS took the tape out similar way)  I have seen the cartridges but not the machine. This video is PURE 70s cheezy style promo video.

yeah - Cory Monteith died of a drug overdose during the summer hiatus. He was one of the male leads, possibly alpha. 
There was an episode of everyone hearing that he'd died and heading home to mourn him... 
Interestingly, they never mention the character's cause of death, and he was a clean-cut kid who never did drugs, so it's a bit... off.  

Glee didn't so much kill off a character as have to deal with an actor dying on them.

Angel killed off one of the 3 stars in the 7th episode. 

Also Glee just killed off a main character... but that's a bit different.
