I think there is this fixation in Hollywood with being "subversive," and therefore doing whatever is seen as the exact OPPOSITE of what is expected decorum. 

The problem is, when every piece of writing does this at every opportunity, it is no longer subversive - it is *expected*. The actual subversive thing would be to have straight people, white men in positions in authority roles, decisive, tough-as-nails decisions - a willingness to resort to justified violence - right and wrong being black and white and clearly defined. Fiction like that would be completely unexpected into today's media environment. Getting the opposite of that at EVERY turn - is just the status quo.

It isn't Star Trek. Disney Star Wars isn't Star Wars. They're fan fiction written by LGBT+/Feminist/Woke activists. Nothing fits into the canon of the rest of the franchise. In any case, it's already over. Season 2 is wrapping up in post, so they'll air it, but word has just gone out that it has been canceled and they will not be ordering a season 3.

The pressure to grow up early there is huge. It is part of why we moved to Ohio to raise or own kid. But - that was effed up in its own unique way.

Luck is a weird thing. I want to be kind of clear and blunt - I was popular - and I bullied guys in the computer and chess and other intellectual clubs. I did all kinds of dope, and I was getting laid by 16 year old high school girls in 8th grade when I was 14... but I always had this kind of undercurrent of thinking, "maybe the lucky guys are the ones who just get through this and go on to have a job and a family and never get in a fist fight and do their 9-5 job for 45 years until they retire with a Timex watch."

Yes, I agree. We're all undiagnosed and on spectrum. A lot of us ended up attracted to the Punk Scene - which was intellectual - but also sharp and intelligent and witty and smart - everything that say, metal wasn't. 

And your dad sounds abusive - but in a way that our dads intended to be nurturing - they were a different generation too, weren't they? They thought maybe the beatings, verbal or mental - would toughen us up and make us get our shit together. They didn't know how to relate to us - but they were using the tools they knew to try and shape us. Unfortunately they often used hammers when they needed scalpels. 

I had failed Spanish, Russian and French by the time I was in 8th grade - also violin. But I have a couple of friends who are orchestra strings in major city orchestras - which is amazing to me. Honestly, I think most of us from that "scene" had/have a touch of the spectrum at some level.

But here's the thing: as my dad used to tell me, there's a difference between "intelligent" and "smart." (That was on a good day. I take it further, though: there's intelligent (high raw thinking power), "smart" (able to apply cognitive skills), "clever" (apply with creativity) and "intellectual" (uses big words but is actually quite stupid; these people tend to get jobs as college professors or writing for the New York Times).

Starfleet Academy is neither creative nor clever. I've heard it said that it seems they are trying to appeal to a bunch of Gen Z women who have never watched Star Trek. If the clips are a good example of the show, it's completely unwatchable.

I cant remember which movie, but McCoy commented about Kirk wearing his..  They had a drug, but i guess he was allergic or something.  Of course that doesn't truly explain Geordi either.. as the visor was unnecessary. I was rewatching the TOS episode "Space Seed" last night and was reminded of a line that has always puzzled me: Why does Scotty apologize for being a Scotsman not up on Milton? I don't know of any special connection between Milton and Scotland. Was it just a common stereotype held by Hollywood writers in the 1960s? "He's from Scotland, so he must play the bagpipes, be an alcoholic scotch drinker, be an engineer, and have Paradise Lost memorized."

I was far more pleased with episode 2. Amanda Plummer (Honey Bunny from Pulp Fiction) was brilliant.

I think still far better than 1 and 2.  Not that its super great but its 'decent' and has a TNG feel instead of the weirdness from the other 2. ( at least EP1, not watched EP2 yet )

TOS clearly had left leaning values (for example, it was pretty obvious that they had UBI) but they had a way of simply painting a possible future instead of overplaying it the way they all do now.

I do agree i'm not the target.  For most current shows really. Fans of classic works, they are not interested in us anymore.

I am old enough to be a fan when TOS was out, and while it was liberal leaning i fully agree, it didnt shove it in your face and preach at you like they do now.  Its just sad they lost at least one generation due to their current push ( no pun intended there ).  I'm sure even Roddenberry woudl not be pleased.  He supported equality, not equity. 

I have not yet watched SNW yet.   But with how bad things are in general these days, i would be ok with 'meh'. Picard S1 was that way for me.  S2, i bailed around ep3 i think, perhaps 4. Just after they rescued diversity hire #2 from the ICE bus.

however, I agree with a lot of this. there's quite a few things about Discovery that are off-putting, and their treatment of Spock in that early season is one of them.

I was not particularly impressed with last night's premiere of Strange New Worlds, either; it wasn't *bad* per se, but it wasn't *great* either. Just kinda meh. It wasn't a particular compelling storyline, it was just... an episode.

Picard on the other hand. I really loved both seasons, and S2E9 was the best of S2. E10 I liked a little bit less, it was just kind of a feel-good wrap-up to everything... but E9, I think, really knocked the ball out of the park.

The 51 weeks of programming that are not Shark Week.

Being a trek fan, i felt i should try harder than most. but yes i agree that it was my fault for sticking around too long. But i honestly saw the promise of what it could be at first, and was hopeful. it just got worse and worse and worse and at some point i had to get off the bus.

Burnham ruined it.  An unlikable Mary sue, who cant act. No thanks.  Then they buried it in season 2.  As soon as they made Spock look like a jerk. Then i stopped watching.

Season 3. there was perhaps 2 episodes at beginning ( i tried it again.. i'm stupid ) and was not all that bad, until she returned.  Gave up again.

If they had framed this in the future, not the past, kept Lorca and never had Burnham ( or at least not a diversity hire Mary Sue..) , it might have turned out to be an ok show.   ( yes i realize they went into the future later, but that's a cop-out )

Heh - I did that this summer. Unfortunately you get ushered through the set so you can't actually spend the afternoon there unless you repeatedly buy tour tickets. Was a nice nerd pilgrimage, though.  Apparently they're in the process of buying the building next door so they can build a full replica of the TNG sets.

My son saw it yesterday (he's 11). Gave it a 4 out of 10. Said the plot was confusing and the quality of the effects wasn't as good as last movie.

This.  The previous one was much better.  Music was disappointing, too.

He did some really good fan films of original Trek, then stopped mid-episode. Some people are blaming Paramount, but he did it before the whole fan film thing blew up.
