<p>I think there is this fixation in Hollywood with being "subversive," and therefore doing whatever is seen as the exact OPPOSITE of what is expected decorum. <br /><br />The problem is, when every piece of writing does this at every opportunity, it is no longer subversive - it is *expected*. The actual subversive thing would be to have straight people, white men in positions in authority roles, decisive, tough-as-nails decisions - a willingness to resort to justified violence - right and wrong being black and white and clearly defined. Fiction like that would be completely unexpected into today's media environment. Getting the opposite of that at EVERY turn - is just the status quo. </p>

<p>There is a petition now to Batgirl it - which basically means never show it and write it off as a loss - take the tax credit because it failed so hard. <br /><br />It isn't Star Trek. Disney Star Wars isn't Star Wars. They're fan fiction written by LGBT+/Feminist/Woke activists. Nothing fits into the canon of the rest of the franchise. It isn't just "not for us," it isn't even the same universe. It is so fundamentally different it doesn't fit - so it isn't homophobic or transphobic or xenophobic to reject it. That isn't the actual problem. The problem is the continuity is so wrong - it just doesn't fit logically with the actual canon of the universe. <br /><br />Stop writing fan fiction based on your own fetishes, perversions, kinks and desires - and write "in-universe" fiction and then go ahead and include your agenda for diversity within that framework - and I'm willing to bet 100:1 - the fanbase will accept it - as long as it fits. A Trans Klingon that wears a dress isn't going to survive in Klingon

I know it's off topic, but I have to admit we watched all of the Starfleet
Academy season. I haven't skipped any Trek since DS9...

This was not as bad as some of the Twitter ideologues were saying, but...
it's not great either.

Episode 9 was a cliffhanger, and I was like "Episode 10 had better not be
season cliffhanger... because I really don't care that much to sit through
another season."

<p>I mean... I'm talking late in 7th grade is when the clock started to move for me - but... I was a Californian. All the things you think are wrong for society - start in my native state. The pressure to grow up early there is huge. It is part of why we moved to Ohio to raise or own kid. But - that was effed up in its own unique way. <br /><br />You just can't win. </p>

<p>Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration, but during my early teen years I might as well have been going to an all-boys school.  An interest in computers and any amount of social acceptance at all simply did not mix in the time and place I was.  And then ... in 8th grade I entered a competition to determine who would be sent to a region-wide student programming contest, and when they selected me, it was announced over the loudspeakers ... and that was the moment my social uncleanliness became solidified.</p>
<p>So yeah ... burn the school down for all I care.  Girls were essentially off-limits until college.</p>

I want to be kind of clear and blunt - I was popular - and I bullied guys in the computer and chess and other intellectual clubs. I did all kinds of dope, and I was getting laid by 16 year old high school girls in 8th grade when I was 14... but I always had this kind of undercurrent of thinking, "maybe the lucky guys are the ones who just get through this and go on to have a job and a family and never get in a fist fight and do their 9-5 job for 45 years until they retire with a Timex watch." <br /><br />Seriously.  Like - most people are just another picture in the yearbook

<p>I started dropping acid and banging girls in 8th grade, and going to school on Friday and not coming home until next Thursday - with a runaway girl in tow to eat out of our fridge and then disappear before the parents got home - and knew they couldn't do anything to stop it without sending me to juvi - which made things worse for THEM. <br /><br />I flunked out - and then the next year they put me up mid year because I was basically banging every girl and dragging down all the guys who would come with me and they wanted me in High School, not Jr. High. <br /><br />It was a disaster. <br />In 7th grade - I would have been happy just to play on the Apple IIe in my math class - and the teacher used that as bait to excel on his tests - which I couldn't do. <br /><br />So the next year, I went 180 degrees the opposite way - and became a young criminal - and society - my peer group, rewarded me with everything I thought I wanted. <br /><br />I did just fine in life too - but it took me a while and several

<p>Yes, I agree. We're all undiagnosed and on spectrum. A lot of us ended up attracted to the Punk Scene - which was intellectual - but also sharp and intelligent and witty and smart - everything that say, metal wasn't. <br /><br />And your dad sounds abusive - but in a way that our dads intended to be nurturing - they were a different generation too, weren't they? They thought maybe the beatings, verbal or mental - would toughen us up and make us get our shit together. They didn't know how to relate to us - but they were using the tools they knew to try and shape us. Unfortunately they often used hammers when they needed scalpels. <br /><br />I had failed Spanish, Russian and French by the time I was in 8th grade - also violin. But I have a couple of friends who are orchestra strings in major city orchestras - which is amazing to me. They get to sit and drag catgut over steel strings and make a great living playing music that is 500 years old. I eventually got decent at Spanish. <br /><br />I think by yo

People filtering every show through their sensibilities to go, "well, that is stupid..." <br /><br />Sure it is. <br />I think in tech - growing up in the 80s before autism was really a diagnosis - we were surrounded by these guys - very pedantic, binary - RIGHT or WRONG attitude people who dissected every little detail for accuracy in a way that was not very emotionally intelligent - but was very high IQ. High functioning autists were rampant in Atari and Commodore and also CITADEL communities in the 80s. <br /><br />Guys that seemed a little "retarded" socially - excuse the politically incorrect but accurate phrasing - but who were able to tell you the exact byte count, sectors, heads, of any particular MFM drive - like counting toothpicks spilled on the floor. <br /><br />"You've been telling me you were a genius since you were 17. <p>They don't.</p>
<p>I cant remember which movie, but McCoy commented about Kirk wearing his..  They had a drug, but i guess he was allergic or something.  Of course that doesn't truly explain Geordi either.. as the visor was unnecessary. But it was to make the show look more inclusive, so it didn't have to really make sense.</p>

enjoy good cinema. The only important thing to do is not to pay for depictable

<p>Hmm not been paying attention, but new ST series starts this month ( i think, if not, its still soon ).  A spin off of Discovery..  So im sure it will be a disaster too.   </p>
<p>Still a shame they destroyed Discovery, it had potential, on paper.  If they had kept it in the alt-universe, kept the captain, and never ever even thought of bringing that woman into the show, i think it could have been a good series. Perhaps not the greatest in the franchise, but at least would have not been the worst.</p>

I don't know of any special connection between Milton and Scotland. Was it just a common stereotype held by Hollywood writers in the 1960s? "He's from Scotland, so he must play the bagpipes, be an alcoholic scotch drinker, be an engineer, and have Paradise Lost memorized."</span></p>

<p>Yes i know its reality, and people age ( dealing with that this week with my mother, who is ill again ).  But was looking at some of the older TNG stuff this weekend, its amazing how young some of the cast was, and now they look look old.. "what happened to them"  Oh ya, its been nearly 30 years. </p>

This is of course the classic Hollywood problem; most of them use their fame

He's a celebrity on the left, so people take his word as gospel almost.

I had one disagreement which got me blocked by one of his sycophants on Twitter.
A Takei meme was going around where he basically said that the unvaccinated
should no longer "receive priority medical care."

So there are a lot of ethical problems with this. First of all, he misunderstands
what "priority" means in this context; even during a Covid surge, Covid patients
DO NOT receive "priority" medical care. Triage doesn't work that way; everyone
is prioritized based on criteria like what kind of care they NEED and what
are their chances of survival. It's not like we're
just saying "covid patients get priority."

More generally, ethically -- we don't, can't, and shouldn't open the door
to denying care to people based on their poor preventive choices, and we especially
don't deny medical care to people who have political beliefs we disagree with.

So as I see it, there are times when the far left / far right need to restrain
themselves from their worst impulses. And this was Takei's worst impulse.

Anyway, I had this mutual follower on Twitter who was just kind of a left-wing
meme factory. She RT'd that meme, and I simply responded with "luckily, George
Takei is in no place to define our medical ethics.
 "

I caught an instance block for that, from someone who had been "a mutual"
for a year or more. Which tells me that this sycophant wasn't really interested
in following *me* in the first place; she was a meme-retweeter looking for
retweets. Insincere.

TOS was different, for sure. And it was a product of its times. It was too
risky for Roddenberry to make Sulu (the character, not the actor) openly gay,
for instance.

The biggest fault of TOS, in my opinion, is its treatment of women. Every
time a woman walked on set (often a female ensign serving coffee) they play
cheezy music that just screms "OMG a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN just WALKED ON SET!"

 That business aged badly.

<p>I do agree i'm not the target.  For most current shows really. Fans of classic works, they are not interested in us anymore.</p>
<p>I am old enough to be a fan when TOS was out, and while it was liberal leaning i fully agree, it didnt shove it in your face and preach at you like they do now.  Its just sad they lost at least one generation due to their current push ( no pun intended there ).  I'm sure even Roddenberry woudl not be pleased.  He supported equality, not equity. </p>
<p>I have not yet watched SNW yet.   But with how bad things are in general these days, i would be ok with 'meh'. Picard S1 was that way for me.  S2, i bailed around ep3 i think, perhaps 4. Just after they rescued diversity hire #2 from the ICE bus.</p>

I can't say it is entirely the show's fault that you suffered so much...

<p>If they had framed this in the future, not the past, kept Lorca and never had Burnham ( or at least not a diversity hire Mary Sue..) , it might have turned out to be an ok show.   ( yes i realize they went into the future later, but that's a cop-out )</p>

Some number of years ago there was a fanfic version of that, but they did
it *really* well, like with real sets and costumes and it looked like actual
Trek. I don't remember what it was called but it was quite presentable.

I subscribed to CBS All Access mainly for Picard, but then I binge-watched
the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery.

Not bad, although spore drive is some serious deus ex machina, and they had
to do a lot of retconning around that and the level of technology in the ship
(which seems to exceed even that of the Enterprise-D, let alone TOS Enterprise.)

Season 1 better than Season 2 IMO.

I'm enjoying Picard quite a bit. You can see why they managed to convince
Patrick Stewart to return to the character after swearing it off.

Well, episode 1 was great. Episode 2 I felt was slowly paced, didn't really
go anywhere, and was just developing back-story in a somewhat predictable
way. Let's hope they pick up the pace again with today's episode.

So now I'm thinking there's got to be an alternate canon *somewhere* in the
fandom, where the Empire are the protagonists, just trying to be peacemakers
across the galaxy, and the rebels are a bunch of snotty upstarts who are just
being selfish and disruptive.

(It's been said that this is how the French Revolution *actually* went.)

In a world where "Wicked" was so successful in doing this with the Wizard
of Oz (not Aahz) world, I'm sure *someone* has done it to Star Wars. I was
chatting with a friend today about this and we were thinking that if Luke
had joined up with his dad to rule the galaxy, they could have easily wiped
out those pesky brats.

Well I saw Rogue One. That's about all I can say... in the end, it doesn't
matter much that this film was "dark." This is a film that does not have much
to say, and spends >120min saying it.

Tyranny is bad, mm-kay, and sometimes rebels do bad things. The other 115
minutes are mindless action and the retroactive patching of a certain well-known
plot hole.

Some bad camera work, to boot. Maybe they were trying to throw the viewer
into the action and produce the feel that some of the scenes were hastily
shot by an embedded war journalist? Regardless, I found it jarring. MTV used
to do that on The Real World, right? Star Wars is not reality TV.

 But it was entertaining enough...

<p>Meanwhile, there are a bunch of episodes of something called "<a href="http://www.startrekcontinues.com/">Star Trek Continues</a>" which is a kickstarted, fan-produced re-creation of the original series with the original characters, but with new scripts and new actors.  CBS apparently is ok with this because it is distributed free of charge.  They've done an incredible job of reproducing the 1960's style scenery, costumes, and special effects.  The writing and acting, while naturally not up to par with the original, is still surprisingly good considering it's the television equivalent of fanfic.</p>

Star Wars Episode IV. Very much worth the $2 to buy it from Amazon streaming
for hte kids' entertainment yesterday evening. (And this morning. And probably
many other times.) But then, I like P&F anyway, way more than the kids do.

Is that why, in all those episodes of Star Trek, in all of its variations
and reincarnations, you never, ever, not even once, saw a restroom?

for a battle station that is permanently in space. The station would be losing
pressure at a fairly high rate of speed if it doesn't have a fresh air intake.

What kind of energy does the Death Star's core run on, anyway? I can't imagine
they've got a diesel engine in there. It's got to be some sort of nuclear
reactor. How do you run one of those in space without a supply of cooling
water? The empty vacuum of space is *not* an effective thermal discharge.
