Simsalapoof!

My 1.00 magnification reading glasses got broken last night. They were the
only 1.00's I owned and they were perfect for use at the computer screen.
The rest of my readers are 1.25. In fact, the 1.00 are rather difficult
to find.

So I did what any reasonable person would do. I moved the keyboard from
the tray back up to the desk. Then I raised the chair up all the way to match
that. And then I raised the screen by the same amount to match that. Now
I can sit close enough to the screen for the 1.25 readers to work properly.

I'm enjoying it so far, but it's reminding me why I had the other configuration
in the first place: at this height, my feet don't touch the floor (I am a
rather diminutive individual) and that creates a bit of fatigue after sitting
for a while. I need to buy or build a little box to rest my feet on.

This whole experience offers undeniable proof of everything I already believed.

I grew up on unfiltered well water out in the country ( Midwest US ) . It didnt kill me, however i cant stand drinking city water or any other water without some 'meat' to it. ( showering, sure, its nicer not to have all that iron and other stuff.. and easier on pipes, but drinking, no thanks )

I have to add something to it or i want to gag.

When I read "distilled to remove impurities, and then impurities added back
in" I actually did think it was going to be a link to one of Big Clive's distillation
experiments.

If you're using it for medical equipment - distilled water is perfect. If you're using it for aquarium, you want reverse osmosis filtration.

If you're 95% of the world, you'll drink distilled water and go, "This tastes funky," it is like alcohol free beer, caffeine-free, zero calorie soda... you might CONVINCE yourself it is good, you might ACQUIRE a taste for it.

But regular people will tell you it tastes wrong. They want the taste of the "additives" that are naturally in water in their water.

When Melvin's sister dies, I expect we'll have a similar problem.

She's essentially an invalid. She is blind, deaf, gnarled, and stunted,
with scant social skills and no prospects for employment. To me, it sounds
like the only real difference between these two is that your relative *could*
have been more, but was stunted by other people.

So what would I say?

I can speak to her sense of humor, as I've observed that. I could possibly
relate some of the traits I've observed in her character, despite her limited
ability to express herself, or make something of her life from a conventional
perspective. I could talk of her reaction to some of the things done around
her.

But I couldn't really say much about conversations with her, as we never
communicated verbally, or with any real precision. I couldn't say she accomplished
anything particularly amazing, even for her condition. I think she's pretty
cool, but that seems a tad brief for a eulogy.

If you're talking about a psychiatric condition... it's sad when doctors
just act like pill-pushers. But there are genetic/biological mental illnesses
(which *require* medication, such as schizophrenia), and social/spiritual
mental illnesses (for which medication is more controversial), and then there
are conditions like much of the autism-spectrum where the best answer is "there's
no pill that will really help with this, just learn to live with it dude."

Sorry for your loss...

I've been looking at the room list for a few minutes now and can't figure
out where to post this, so I'm selecting a random unused room. This one's
kind of a downer, so stop here if you were looking for rainbows and unicorns.

This is about a relative who was diagnosed with a treatable condition when
she was young, and spent her entire adult life overmedicated for it, leaving
her somewhat numb to the world. Worse, she was treated as a complete and
utter dependent her entire life by parents who, inevitably, became too old
to care for her. She briefly had a job (wouldn't even call it a career),
briefly had the ability to drive before a few accidents made it clear that
she couldn't handle it, etc. Never married or had kids, either; in fact I've
never heard any stories of even a brief romance at any time in the past.

More recently, she ignored obvious signs of an early stage
cancer, let it progress, and died. This raises the question: how do you write
a eulogy for someone whose life basically didn't happen? (No, I didn't have
to write it.) You can basically say generic things about "beloved [relationship]"
etc etc. But where's the *legacy*? I suppose it's easy for people who have
offspring, because in that case your family is your legacy, or at least a
part of it. Things accomplished in a long career could be your legacy. A
life of service can be your legacy. Even if you're a notoriously evil villain
you have a legacy.

But for someone whose entire life was basically "failure to launch" ? Where
do you go with that? The most inspiring words we heard at the funeral were
from someone who had never even met her.

12:45pm : Simsalapoof! I open the front door and accidentally hit an Amazonopoly
box at *just* the right speed and angle that it rolls down the front steps,
picking up enough speed to cross the front walk and continue rolling down
the hill in the front yard, finally coming to a stop about 30 feet away from
the house.

4:30pm : Simsalapoof! My wife is leaving to take the IGlette to her dance

She hasn't opened the box yet but if the contents are broken it is 100% Jeff

Certainly not a penguin *on* Windows.

Disney (100HE[tm]) has announced that they are shutting down Club Penguin

douchey enough to support Disney's marketing/merchandising efforts at a sufficiently
overkill level.

For those under a certain age, or more likely, with kids a certain age, this
is disappointing. My kids have outgrown it but they remember it fondly and

But once you've been drinking coffee, you need coffee. Haven't you ever had any proper addictions before?

I saw for sale and bought for my father's wife a cold brewer coffee thingie. I think it works by putting in coffee (real coffee not the instant stuff) and putting in cold water and sitting it in the fridge overnight. I was waiting for her to use it, so I could go find out if I would like something like that, but she hasn't gotten around to using it. So it looks like she's not too interested, but I told her it's supposed to be less acidic than regular brewed coffee, or cause less heartburn, or something.

After reading up on it, I think Krispy Kreme suffered more from upper management at a corporate level concentrating on making the corporation profitable at the expense of their franchisees. After their IPO it looks like they grew too quickly, allowed too many franchisees to be too close to each other, and signed deals to steal sales from those franchisees (Gas station & Supermarket sales), which was good for corporate, but made it so people wouldn't want to be a Krispy Kreme franchisee.

As a comparison, Dunkin Donuts didn't have the same issues at the same time, and saw increases in sales, where Krispy Kreme saw decreases in sales.

Though it seems that since 2007 there has a been a turn around, and they are growing slowly. In 2016 Krispy Kreme was purchased and taken private. So that might be a good thing. We will have to see.

**BOOM**

SOTU 2017? *click* **BOOM** (That would be a very small targeted explosion)

I also want a tree that grows marshmallows, so I can toast them over a
campfire without having to take the extra step of putting a marshmallow on
a stick first.

LOL, it's a Keifer Southerland TV show. Premise is that the State House was blown up during the State of the Union so the entire executive branch - Southerland - and most of the Congress has been lost. Southerland (HUD Secretary) was the Designated Survivor held at an alternate location and becomes President and needs to rebuild US Gov't and get the states to play ball with him.
