Year or so i wanted to do the same, for similar reasons. But doing it by hand was too much.  I deleted the 'channel' ( but not my account ) and that did it all at once.

My wife's car has a lot of the fancy stuff, and eats thru batteries like no tomorrow.    And if the battery is even slightly low, you are screwed since the computer takes too much power and it wont start.   AND the battery is inside the wheel well up under the wheel behind a panel..  idiots.   a 5 minute trivial job is now a nightmare.    And its always flashing things on the screens, beeping..   I refuse to drive the thing.   Its no wonder people crash more often these days. They are distracted and its not even their phone in their face.

And if its cold out, it bitches "car is not in park", um, yes it is, if it wasn't we would be moving.. 

The location of battery reminds me a bit of my mother's car, years ago. They replaced a 5 dollar fuse box with a 500 dollar computer module.  Which went out 2x in 3 years, and totally disables the car.   2nd time, car was sold. F-that.

I don't even have the ice maker plugged in on mine.  We have a small stand alone unit that sits beside the sink. it has one button. On/Off.  Will run it every so often and put ice in the 'bucket'. or just grab a bag at the local store, its cheap enough.

My gas stove, does not even have a display, digital or analog. My convection oven, still has a mechanical spinner timer.. My furnace, i refused a smart thermostat.  Just found out that i can still get mechanical ones. I may see if i can adapt one...

Latest water heater, while it has some simple electronics inside it to control/monitor the water pressure, temperature and gas and stuff, its not connected to anything, nor can it be. 

Only thing i can think of that is 'smart' in my house, is some of my lights. and they are running on tech that is a good 45 years old. NO internet nonsense.  X10 devices. And most of the devices are ~40 years old, only thing newer are a couple of the remotes, and an IR sensor, and they are 25 years old.

My clothes washer, mentioned before i had to swap out for new one as the transmission died. and parts were 3/4 the cost of a new one.  Took me forever to find one that wasn't BT/Internet/whatever.    Dryer, nope, just a couple of dials. Have had to rebuild it a couple of times now, just to avoid new garbage. 

Oh, and my TV.... no internet for it either. If it dies and i cant find a 'dumb' TV at that point, i'm buying a monitor.

Next year i may start up on that project to yank the ( limited ) computer out of the little car..  To do the jeep, i have to to swap out transmissions, but i prefer an automatic for the back woods. It comes in handy to have it in low gear and hang out the door and steering at the same time. hard to do that futzing with a clutch. But at least its minimal, none of that digital dash/display crap.

Oh, and my watch? Some swiss auto wind thing. I forget the brand. its steampunkish. 

And ya the older i get the more annoyed i become with it all. I totally agree that computers, and networking too, have their place. But its NOT everywhere and in everything. Mechanical items are still appropriate for most things. And i still say if i end up living longer than my wife, its back to the woods for me and i'm going off-grid, except perhaps to pay bills, since some places wont accept a check anymore, and that will only get worse.

I wouldn't get drowned out - even if that were the use case here. On Facebook - they've been trying to make me "go pro," for several years - because I generate big engagement. And I've been fighting it - because they already censor and silence me on unpopular opinions - and they've been blunt about, "If you go pro, you have to be very aware of our ToS and community guidelines." Oh, I'm aware MFers - I just choose to ignore them - so NO. 

And then they were like, "you have to make a choice, private account, with these limitations, or pro account, with these advantages, and these rules..."

Yup. Passive users are easy - but you want a certain limitation on content creators - on posters - too much chatter - and it becomes X, or Facebook. Too much noise. Too many mouth-breathers. 

That is what made Citadel so good - it was the HARDEST BBS to get your head around - not like the menu driven C-64 Warez BBSes that were all 14 year old kids going, "WaR3z, D00d!"

That was how the best dialup Citadels were. Maybe even like, 12 to 16 constant content creators - in a few different BBS cliques. It was real dynamic back then - at the end of the 80s into the early 90s. 

 

Phone call this morning on my house phone. "bla bla power outages due to wind storm, thank you for your patience" sounded almost like a Chinese woman. bad pronunciation and poor quality.   But, no 'please call us' or "press 1 " or anything like a scam. But didn't ID themselves as being with the company ( or it was cut off as if they started talking before the recording started..ive seen that before with robocalls ).. and while it is windy, there no outage reported in our area..  And last i remember our power company doesn't have our house number and instead my cell. BUT of course my area code and prefix will tell you the general area i live if one was scanning.

Funny thing about that, I like the tech stuff, but I never really wanted Uncensored to be a "techies only" place. 

 

I think you're right. I come here when I am done with that shit. It is just... mainstream, banal. I think what we ALL really want is.. 1985-1987 back again - when dialing into a BBS... especially a Citadel - brought you to this weird intellectual place that was beyond a C=64 Warez board full of 733T haxor kidz - into a a place where really smart misfit toys like us could connect with other people who got us. Who we could communicate with about whatever it was. Coding in assembly, playing D&D, listening to underground thrash, working on our PhD dissertations - but you had to be pretty smart just to figure out how to hook up your damn modem and then find a number to dial into back then. 
Now EVERY mouthbreathing knuckledragger can get online - and it shows. You don't REALLY want that here. I mean, you do, for traffic, for clicks - but if you get it, you'll regret it. Funny thing about that, I like the tech stuff, but I never really wanted Uncensored to be a "techies only" place. 

One thing I noticed - as you mentioned, I was trying to focus on content to push people toward my own site - and that WAS a good strategy. It didn't work - but it was a good idea. Anyhow - when I went to rebuild my Vampire V4 stand alone - all the docs on setting up Samba, VLC, MiamiDX tcp/ip stack - other tech docs - were all on an Apache front page on my site that led to "wallofhate.com". So - I found myself in a pickle - I have a NUC with the entire BBS, the entire apache site, all the docs, still intact here - but getting it back up and running and visible on even my internal network so I could get those docs so I could rebuild my V4/SA was a daunting task. I just started again from scratch. If I had just published those docs on my blogger.com site it would have saved me so much effort. Ultimately - it was easier to just start again than to get those docs accessible and relearn everything I've forgotten once again about Linux. I shot myself in my own foot - in that regard and now I am absolutely payin

I know you dropped off last time because you wanted to keep your best material for your own site -- which was the right thing to do at the time. That is mostly why my BBS vanished the last couple of times, the hassle/risk. The first time, life got in the way.. was a long time before i took the time to bring the village back up, and it was basically an echo chamber. the world had changed.

The real problem is - it just isn't practical to run a system out of your home that is on the public web - you need an IT team dedicated to protecting it from attacks. Or at least one person willing to pay close attention who knows what they're doing. I'm just not able to commit that kind of time. I travel enough I had to give my fish away... I can't manage a BBS if I can't keep a 10 gallon bowl of Glofish. 

So... that is my story. 

So, traffic on my Citadel had died to almost nothing - it would go weeks without a visitor - and I just kind of lost my drive to check up on it at all. 
So, that ISP I was using to redirect so that it looked like I was hosting from NY.... called me and said "We had to shut you down - we're getting reports of rogue traffic from your site." 
I had plenty of backups, and an entire machine ready to just swap out as a hotspare - so I could have picked up from the place in time before it was compromised easily - but there just wasn't enough reward. The world really isn't big enough for more than one web accessible Citadel BBS anymore. Especially when I was paying like $15 a month for the service to tunnel its presence to New York. 

Every now and then I get a little wistful. At first, right around the 2018-2020 - way back when I was running it on a Pi 3B - it was actually pretty high volume - more traffic than here. 

But it never recovered when I took the downtime to go from P

So... that is my story. 

It's different everywhere.  My house was built in 1991 and hooked up to town water.  Sewers came in some 15-20 years later but we're not hooked up.  If they want me to connect they can pay for the 250 feet of pipe and trenching, and the lift station that would be required to send my sewage uphill.

And if I ever did hook up ... oh the things I would send down the drain!  A garbage disposer would get installed in my kitchen sink on day one.  Followed by old paint, used motor oil, liquefied dead bodies, fish-shaped ethylbenzene... oh the places you'll go!

Due to where i live, drilling a well is not legal. You are forced to use city water, and sewage.    If i get to move, that wont be the case again.

The house i lived in when i was in gradeschool, the city incorporated, then a couple year latter, just before we moved out "You are grandfathered, any new house must use city resources and if if you touch your systems at all, you must now hook up to new city resources".   I heard some 20 years later, they just forced it. "you will now connect or be fined".   Just a power/cash grab like the rest.

And it doesn't matter!  The work is done.  The entire Arduino ecosystem is open source, and they succeeded at their mission of bringing microcontroller development to the masses without requiring megabuck$ development kits.

Thanks to the Arduino bootloader and development system, turning any microcontroller into an Arduino just requires another one with the bootloader.  Anyone can turn an Atmel microcontroller into an Arduino with not much work.   But you really don't have to, when you can get a Nano clone for $3.

Even so, Espressif is the current favorite, thanks to its network stack.  And they're everywhere.  Hell, my smoker has one to talk to its app.

I'm not going to get worried about this one.  The cat's out of the bag.  Microcontroller development has been democratized.  It isn't going back - with or without Qualcomm.

Looks like they do plan on moving to only their own silicon. News letter today, the next product was announced, its got their silicon.    As far as im concerned the product line is dead. 

As far as Atmel, i think the ship already sailed on that. For all practical purposes, ARM and RISC-V took their market.  Hell even expressIF is moving away from Xtensa and into RISC-V.

I'm happy to hear that the Arduino people are getting a big payday.  Now I don't have to feel bad about buying cheap clone boards.

The interesting part will be to see how they evolve the core products.  Atmel will likely be the big loser, since they'll bring out new boards with Qualcomm chips.  But the software ecosystem won't hiccup, since it's already designed to build on any supported hardware (think ESP32) and there's no such thing as distributing precompiled binaries in the Arduino world.

Yeah, that happens. Here, peace keeper units are complaining that they are having their equipment vandalized regularly. 

Not sure a good place for this, and wont go into the details, but thought it was interesting enough to pop on and tell the story.

This evening, got to witness 2 'signs of destruction' ( 'coming housing.. bla bla' builders put up after they buy out our farmland ) down the street go up in flames.  And later, 2 corporate "for sale" signs on farm land down in the next county, pulled down into the street and run over by several local cars.

Sure, it wont really matter in the long run, but it was glorious to watch.  And a sign people are getting fed up..  perhaps... just perhaps ...

Ya he is uncool, but he did bring LLM AI to the masses attention ( no pun intended there )  and kicked off the current race we are in now..

Exo company, 'bla bla opensource toolkit bla bla ' for about a year.. Now they have stopped even commenting on GitHub, let alone zero contributions for months ( and several things are broke, its not mature..) I suspect they used the community for free testing/bug fixes to get over the hump for their internal product, then walked.  The company still exists, they still are selling products.

As for Minecraft itself, turns out it's pretty easy to pirate.  

Use Tinc, create a friendnet, only open the server to the vpn.

That's probably close to how it will end up eventually (although I hadn't heard of Tinc ... looking at that, it looks a lot like Tailscale)

For now we just closed up access from the outside, since there are only two of us playing and we're both on the local network.  He's sort of on the fence about who we're going to let in now.  If it's just people we know in meatspace, we can set them up with VPN or just run the server on a sooper-seekrit high-numbered port.  

As for Minecraft itself, turns out it's pretty easy to pirate.  I think Notch was ok with that, but M$ probably feels differently :)

I wasn't meaning the actual game servers that were 'bad', just that when you play some multiplayer games your IP 'leaks' to opponents, so the bad actors grab and use those.

I operate a small set of online games and the servers don't call home. Today i had 3 source repositories i have on 'watch' explode with pull requests, all were "bla bla at this web page here !" sort of nonsense. Total scam/spam, but due to the nature of email notices from git, the were not tagged.. ( in this case it was not actually github, but huggingface, which uses git as the engine, so same net effect )

One had over 200 emails before i was able to get in and turn off notices, and tried to tell the admin of that repo.

For what its worth, some time ago i created a dummy google account.  Was for an experiment with building TV streamer thing out of x86 android. I wanted the YT interface to be separate from mine. If i remember right it only asked for an email, and i used a disposable one.  The experiment failed due to another app not working, so didn't keep using it, but it did setup an account.  This might have been about a year ago.

I suppose if they changed the rules, disposable phone numbers might work, so you could still remain anonymous but have a G account.

Reading the wiki page, it looks like the company that i ran into took the same Porteus project, and basically made a proprietary branch of the build scrips, in effect. Started out sucking people in by being 'free', then flipped the switch.

As i mentioned a while ago i gave up on FB in general, except for family on messenger ( yes yes i know.. but they wont move. ).

Today i got a flood of 'fact check notices' from posts at least a year old, some older.  "this post is partially false" .   All related to Trump or Biden.    Must be election season, time to steer that boat.  F-ers like zukerburg should be in jail.

Randomly ran across one of those sites that ties addresses to people, then to their details.  ( unless i thought ahead and formed an LLC and bought the house that way, it shows names of owners..  ). In this case it actually gives you quite a bit for free, to suck you into paying for more.

While it had a lot of stuff wrong, like phone numbers, some of my wives emails ( but some were right too...) , who lived here at a certain date, ( someone with same last name as i after i bought the place.. no...)  and showed my wife with the wrong age, living here but moving out in 2017, but her maiden name moving in at first too, but still living here... ( lol ).  

And i know that what it gives you for free is only a drop in the bucket.

And ya i know privacy and anonymity is a thing of the past, but scary how easy it is for the commoner to get data, not just the government.

The block feature used to just be a way to make someone unfollow you.  They could still see your stuff.  Feminists pressured twitter to make the block feature also stop someone from seeing your stuff.  This was stupid for a couple reasons.  Firstly, if it's a public account then the blocked person can still use another browser to see what you're saying.  Second, this prevents the blocked person from filing reports against you for spreading misinformation about them or sharing their private/personal info.

Musk removing the Block feature just means feminists can actually be held accountable for sharing misinfo/personal info about a person they previously blocked.  Plus the whole idea was just plain stupid.

Im without my normal desktop today as its 'busy', Using one of my newer ARM machines instead, so of course i cant run chrome.  Normally i would use an x86, ( or ChromeOS ) and after install it would sync down all my stuff like passwords and extensions.   I have other x86 boxes i could use, this arm machine is a desktop, and i wanted to use it as such for a while .. i keep touting ARM, figured i should. ( i have in the past, but needed an app only on x86 and emulation, does not work well... )

Passwords, ok, i know that wasn't going to sync down, but seems you can export/import now so i don't lose the nice 'auto fill' ability.  Changes wont sync UP, but that really doesn't matter,that went away at one point when they stopped letting chromium sync without some sort of paid dev license and you compile the code yourself.

Logging into google, does get me voice and chat.. so good there.

But..ads.. i had forgot what its like without ad blockers.  How do people even use the web like that???   Took me a bit to remember which ones i had, and get them installed. But in the meantime. ...wow...

( and yes i know i know.. "its google.. dont use them", but since im also a ChromeOS person, im sort of stuck in the ecosystem. Tho i dont use stuff like photos, or music. or drive. Just the things i 'need' to make life easier. )

On my playbox I finally gave up and moved ssh to a non-standard port. Not because it offers any sort of enhanced security, but because I got sick of the logs being ridiculously large. If you sniff the traffic you will see that 99.9% of it is user=root, password=123, etc etc. Who the hell even runs with PermitRootLogin=yes these days? It hasn't been the default in any decent distro in years.
The stupidity is only eclipsed by what a server with an open 80/tcp or 443/tcp sees these days. Between wordpress and php I suppose there is sufficient low hanging fruit that the kids can still get into a bunch of boxes with 5 year old exploits.

Just recently setup a machine for our wonderful host here to have access to use a decent ARM board for testing.. Added SSH.  Added fail2ban.

To me they are different platforms with a different purpose. Not sure a walled garden will work for twitter.  Not sure if yt-dlp can login to twitter to grab things like it can YT. I have not tried.  There was ONE thing i was getting ( Tucker's 'broadcast' ), but just did a google each week, got the link and grabbed the video. Now i cant.

I have ad block on YT.  While i do still DL what i like and want to keep, i can still browse directly and not deal with ads. YT still has tech videos and such. So its of value to me, for now.

Too late now but i do think its worth releasing.

Its not like others have not thought of it ( i have heard of of them doing something like that at the office ), so i'm sure the spammers have thought of it to, but having another implementation is always good.. And unless *everyone* uses it, i doubt spammers will care.  its all a numbers game.

Today is the first day that I've had it activated, in the sense that during the initial development I was just checking the age of each domain but not filtering based on the reesults.  The above logs are real, with (so far) zero false positives and zero false negatives.  Over the last few years, I've had to add every new top level vanity domain to my blacklist, because whenever a new one opens up, the spammers are there on day one.  The ".wiki" TLD opened up less than a week ago, for example, and the spammers were right on it -- which is actually what inspired me to finally finish this thing instead of continuing to add TLD's to my blacklist.

It's working.  It's working really well, actually.  So ... what now?

My open source instinct is to put it up for download, to share it with the world.  But what if it becomes so popular that spammers then change their tactics?  Then we're stuck with it forever and spam will still flow.  I really don't want to be on the front lines in the war on spam.  On the other hand, if I don't publish this, someone else will eventually build something similar, and then I won't get the credit.  It's a tough choice.

The other concern is over what this could do to the whois servers.  I don't know of any other way to obtain domain creation dates, and I have some concern that the servers will eventually get overloaded and start throttling requests.  One of the reasons why I ran this thing in a test mode for so long was to see whether the whois servers reacted to so many queries.  uncensored.citadel.org only receives a few hundred emails (including filtered spam) per day.  If it were run on a high-volume site there could be some trouble.  I do intend to add some caching into the module. so that it isn't constantly querying for the domains of high-volume senders like gmail and yahoo.

What do y'all think?  Is this something I should release into the wild, or keep it to myself?

For a long time we paid for teams, webx, zoom, jabber, analog phones, voip phones, all at the same time  ( and i'm sure other overlapping systems ). We still have jabber, for chat, IF you had it for phone before the switch.  I have heard later this year after everyone has been migrated to teams phone, it gets removed from our desktops and the license goes away..

Our phone numbers were ported to teams a while ago.   Used to have VoIP devices + jabber ( Cisco's corrupted version ) so we could go either way.

Sometimes I turn on my office phone (which is a softphone; when the desk set broke I declined a replacement) but not often, because I don't really do outside calls anymore, and internally we use Teams. I usually regret it, because the only calls that come through are either robocalls or actual telehasslers.

The ones I really hate are the ones who know my name and title, and are calling "on behalf of" [some big company, like IBM or such] and want my permission for them to send me spam. "So I have your address as <ig.foobar@employer.com>, is that the correct address for you?" hoping to make the person they are calling think past the sale. It is my pleasure to be rude to them and make it absolutely clear that I am declining "I AM NOT GIVING YOU PERMISSION TO SEND ME SPAM, THANK YOU"

And that is why on most days I don't even bother to start up my softphone.

Kind of ironically, I had the opposite problem a few weeks ago. A delivery requiring a signature (license plates for my son's car) was on the way. Usually they try for a couple of days before giving up. I was home all day but somehow missed the delivery. The guy must have just looked at the doorbell and when it didn't ring on its own decided to give up. No second attempt. He stuck a note on the door telling me to pick up the package at a dropoff location two towns over. Thanks a lot.

If the package was shipped without a signature requirement ... there is a bit of fat built into the price for them to handle theft claims.

My pet peeve for those deliveries is when they leave a package out in the rain to potentially get ruined.

Cloud has its place. But its not a solution for everything.

Personally, i think its good for disaster recovery/availability and having some room for temporary on the fly expansion of resources in case of emergency.  But not a lot more.

I would have it ready to use, but be mostly shut down.   Of course shared storage, that is a bit hard not to have copy 'up three in case of local data center vanishing' , but that is just the cost of insurance. 

It makes the inevitable crash even more fun to watch.

Pretty much what I expected. The "build your own" needed to happen, competition is a good thing, but it needed to be attached to someone not so politically driven. There is no way it could have ever been anything other than a Trump blog.

whoohoo found a temp fix.

It seems that everyone gets a unique ID to track you, which is part of the link underneath the word "sponsored" that no longer is a word.  You can set a filter on that ID however.  No one knows long you keep your ID, and may have to do it again.  Its too recent of a change. But for the moment, it works.

Dammit my AD block on FB quit.   They changed how they post the word 'sponsored' on their 'ad info link', so the filter cant recognize it.   Not yet sure how they do it as i have not looked past trying to do a inspect on the page, was worthless, as its *ALL* JS. But now the word isn't a word. Its random set of characters that display as the word. Cant even copy/paste the label. It 'looked' funny, so i tried that first to find 'wtf is this'

I'm looking for a way to describe those of us who were online and immersed in online culture *before* it went mainstream. 

When i was in school to become an EE, and it came time to discuss CPUs and ISAs. We were given a handout of the gate structure of a Z80, and we took a look at how the masking worked to build the chip  ( even toured a chip plant.. lucky enough to have one within a day trip ). We also talked about microcode and how it made the gates 'work' to do things and tried a few experiments with discrete logic on a breadboard. ( was a huge fan of microcode, and the Dec chip that exposed it.. ) After we had built a rudimentary board with a z80 some ram and some blinky lights and switches, "now, we learn assembler so you can make the lights blink".  

That is also time time had the brilliant idea " why are we doing this in discrete gates? if its always a predictable outcome, why not use eproms instead? "  "reduce parts count, wiring AND easily up-gradable later "

Guy i work with, when he went to the *same* class some 15 years later " this is a Pentium cpu, lets pass it around and oooo at it " "now that you have seen it, we will learn so program in basic on this PC over here...  "

Eventually brain drain will catch up to us "i wonder how this used to work, its broke now and wont blink"  ....

Its just yours is in the list they have/created.

I had a similar experience - I tried pi-hole hoping it would block YouTube ads when we watch videos on Roku or Chromecast.  It wasn't all that effective.  On the other hand, a conventional ad blocker on a browser is 100% effective, so perhaps some sort of proxyt blocker could be built instead.

On my mobile, I've been using Vanced for a long time and am really disappointed to hear  that it's being discontinued.

had a spare raspberry pi, installed pi-hole.  it works pretty good. (yt not blocked but ad-blocker ultimate plug in does).  pi-hole spikes the nettlesome ads buried in various games and utilities on phones and tablets.  hackers should hit these guys with wanna-cry ransom.

I also thought of that here at home ( wife uses the app ), but what happens to the video when it tries to hit an ad, does it pause or something? The ad blocker i have inside chrome does not do that and the video never stops.

Spinning up a VM to do it here would be pretty simple.

Can confirm. Worked for an Amazon retailer. It was 80% of his sales - and he would have liked WAY more to go direct through the website - but Amazon will kill your store if they catch you TRYING to get customers to go direct - so even being sneaky is a huge risk when it is 80% of your sales. 

But if they're smart enough to figure it out themselves - the retailers are thrilled. Most people aren't.

Picture this: you are looking into buying a book, and you see it is in Amazon. You check which sellers have it there. Then you look them up on the Internet. Chances are you will find some of them.


The ones who don't have an agreement with a parcel delivery agency are not gonna take your offer, but those who do remote delivery out of Amazon as part of their business will do. If they DO have their own ecommerce (which many do, since setting up a CMS for sales is cheap nowadays) then your problem is solved.

Amazon logistics and being in Amazon's marketplace is very expensive for small and medium business. If the firm is really big (ie. a manufacturer) then Amazon may be cheaper than a regular logistics agency. Maybe.

Amazon tries to force sellers into having cheaper products at their store than off-band so maybe there is that. I don't think they are very successful enforcing that, actually.

I worked for a large company that went IPO.  they did a lot of funny business just before to boost our image. ( like taking on large expensive contracts, that ultimately we would lose money on ).

We were given the opportunity to buy stock at 1/2 price just before the public got it.  As the company had been around for 30 years and at the time the largest private firm that did that work, we all dug out our penny banks and bought some. ( at the time i didnt have much cash floating around, so i scraped up 1 or 2 grand, i dont remember now to be honest. it wasn't a *lot* but it wasn't insignificant either at the time ).

Few months later the company started to implode, and i got out. Saw what was coming as i had seen it before, but many of my friends did not and stayed. Honestly had forgot about the stock, or id have dumped it at a loss.

About year later they hired local locksmiths to lock the doors across the planet one night, canceled credit cards of sales guys on the road. etc.  No warning. Even local shop managers were standing outside offices wondering what the F- was going on. Out of business totally.  Sales friend of mine was trying to pay for dinner with a client " sorry sir your card was declined ". They didnt even bother to tell them they had no job and he was out on the road that week.

Fast forward about 10 years later and  i get a letter in the mail.  " bla bla attorneys, class action, bla bla board is now in prison for fraud, bla bla full refund on your stock "  Great i thought. i could use the cash and kept reading   " you must provide your *original* documentation of purchase as the company that handled the sale was gone too, and you have about a week to do it. All unclaimed proceeds will go to bla bla attorneys"  wtf..  

It was 10 years, who keeps that crap after a company folds that long ago?  No one i know did. So we got screwed, twice.

These aren't consumer features they're crippling. To leverage this hardware feature, you've already paid for an expensive enterprise class license on the software that leverages the feature. It is industrial/professional use intention. 


It is kind of like business class and consumer class ISP bandwidth are the same thing - but you're paying more for a business class subscription based on the fact that it is mission critical to you making money - so it costs more. 

They're trying to discourage rinky-dink, fly-by-night shops from using DIY grade servers and pirated copies of enterprise license apps... and then to expect enterprise class support from the whole supply chain when something goes wrong. 

I mean... Intel isn't alone in this approach... a lot of software companies have different licensing levels for

They could sell you the fully enabled version for the price you're paying for the crippled version - because - that is EXACTLY what they're doing... you're getting the fully loaded hardware - so they're making enough no matter what to cover the cost. There is a lot of high end hardware which can be purchased that way: they provide the hardware at cost or at a minimal markup, and then they sell you the "capacity" as a recurring operating expense. Networking hardware can be notorious for that -- for example, you can license the number of ports, or the amount of bandwidth it can carry.

Bringing it all the way down to the CPU level seems like a great way to hasten the demise of legacy CPU vendors, not to mention hastening the development of alternative software that doesn't honor the restrictions.

(Regarding the Do Not Call list)

It was created in a time when most unwanted calls came from real telemarketers in real call centers using their own phone numbers in the same country code as the person being solicited.

Do Not Call is now 100% obsolete for this reason.  The vast majority of unwanted solicitations are now robocalls.  They originate from foreign call centers using VoIP and falsified caller ID.  Much of the time they are not even using a list; they are simply dialing random numbers until they get an answer.

To make things worse, the calls usually originate from a completely different location from the one that will actually handle the solicitation.  When you "press 1 to be connected" the company running the robocalls transfers the call to the company running the scam.  Neither organization is likely to be in your home country, and there is obviously no observance of the Do Not Call list.

So what can you do?  Well, as previously mentioned, if you have a VoIP service that supports "simultaneous ringing" you can sign up for Nomorobo, which is free if you have simultaneous ringing, or $1.99/month for a mobile device.  They use statistical analysis to seize (on landlines) or block (on mobile) robocalls, and it works really well.

If you don't have a service, then of course the best thing to do is just harass the ever-loving shit out of them.

Doubt it.

I still buy CDs too. Only directly from the artist, or one of the small indi labels that dont screw the artist.  And since i dont like mainstream music, its pretty common. M/PAA are some of the worst scumbags out there and wont feed that beast.

Among other reasons, most streaming services rotate their product.  So in 6 months, that tv show you signed up to watch, may be gone.

The ones here, do that, they spoof local numbers. And each time the call back its a different local number. What is fun is when its YOUR number :) 

Often times wen it starts here, its for several hours and you get  call every 15 minutes.  I have an answering machine to deal with them, but i still have to go back later and delete.

I dont see how, for phone scams at least. They just take blocks of area codes and scan them.... nothing to 'buy'.

I did read the whole article. Your partisan bias caused you cognitive dissonance when you read it that filtered out the root responsibility for the current situation to avoid confronting that it was the side that you associate closest with that initiated the events leading to his current decision to part ways with the band. 

To be fair, he engages in some of this too, and it isn't unusual. 

Before you feel attacked or accused - take a deep breath, and try to read on with an open mind.

This all started because he said something positive about Andy Ngo, a Right wing pundit who is completely hated by Leftist Radicals like AntiFA. It wasn't anyone on the Right attacking him for congratulating Ngo on his book, let alone attacking people ASSOCIATED with Marshall. He acknowledges the BIGGEST problem were the continued harassment by THE LEFT for him saying he read a book by someone on the Right and dared to consider it. I also, despite not exactly being a Christian, think the "a bit of this and a bit of that," Marshall mentions probably has to do with him disagreeing with the Left on a fair bit to do with Religious freedom and expression. I imagine this applies to the whole band - who probably swing Left on almost everything but THAT topic - and find themselves sleeping with strange bedfellows on that latter topic - but he basically acknowledges this several times in his essay.

Yeah, if you are running your own domain/email server - definitely implement SPF because some domains will classify everything you send as spam otherwise

Great so about 1030 i started getting undeliverable messages.  1000s of them.  Someone has decided to use my domain to spoof spam from. 

Lesson learned: SPF is not optional ( actually i thought they had it on by default.  but im a legacy account for nearly 2 decades so i guess it never happened on its own ).  With luck i wasn't black listed first.

I've got a Ring. It is convenient - I've got 3 internal webcams. One in my garage, so I can check if I left the door open or not, one in the kitchen, that is directional, so I can control where it points, and most of the time it points at something uninteresting. 

If they're going to listen in, let 'em. I'm not plotting anything. 

And I have physical access to the power switch on the surge suppressors. 

For cameras that watch the *outside* i honestly dont care if they are seen by others.  So they hack in and see cars drive up and down the street. Or the postal girl walk past. And my bushes. Perhaps an occasional bug fly past and set off the motion sensor.  My front lawn is public view anyway, if one really cares to sit on our street and watch.

Anything i might have inside to watch the dogs or something, would be home-built.   Back yard, same thing.

I think it's safe to assume that if your DVR has "cloud" capabilities, the Bad People are using it to spy on you.  At the very least, "lawful intercept" (which is now "whenever they feel like it intercept") would have access.

I don't have security cameras.  I think about it once in a while.  I suppose the analog systems are secure if you don't attach the DVR to the Internet, or perhaps to an isolated segment that doesn't have outbound access, but then you have to run cables to every camera instead of just hooking into the nearest available ethernet (or wifi).  For a truly secure IP-based system, you probably have to roll your own to keep Winnie Xi Pooh away from it.

Of course, my wife still has the damn Facebook app on her phone, so the Bad People are already listening in on our conversations anyway.

I think recording is a double edged sword. It can protect you, or it can be used against you, depending on the situation. Dashcams are a great example of this - and I don't think it really matters tremendously in MOST cases if the video is "cloud" stored or locally controlled. 

If you get in an accident, you're at fault, and it is bad enough that they're going to look at the video - it is likely that the camera has been confiscated and its contents searched under a subpoena before you can intervene. Even if you are able to intervene - you'll get hit with tampering with evidence. 

In-home cams are potentially different - depending on where they are located. 

But my RING doesn't worry me. My Dlink in my garage doesn't worry me. I'm not sure what kind of nefarious purposes a hacker or foreign bad actor would get up to with that.

I would like a camera that I didn't have to use someone else's server

(paid or not) to use the camera... but I think those days are over.

 

I have been told some cheap Chinesse camera manufacturer was saving the video feed in their own servers for nefarious purposes. Whether this is true or not, it comes to show how dangerous these things can be.

A security firm nearby who is quite serious about this stuff is making their own cameras with RPi camera modules and some SBC. If you just want to be able to check on your hamster on your phone I guess a raspberry camera would do and not be expensive at that.
