On the road. So much road.

Public service announcement: if your parent or parents are moving out of a home they've lived in for more than 0 years, ignore all protests and get a dumpster. After being told not to get a dumpster, get a dumpster. If it seems like a dumpster is not needed, get a dumpster.

We just finished the worst of the worst. We emptied the house that my mom and dad lived in for 54 years, along the way taking on all the stuff left behind by *their* parents and relatives. There were parts of the attic that I haven't seen since I was a child, and stuff in it that is almost as old.
And my mom insisted on curating at the level of each individual item, right down to which thrift shop it ought to be sent to.

Even after the moving truck came and went (75+ boxes plus multiple rooms of furniture for one 79 year old!) she continued curating what was left behind.
And after months of me saying "no, we don't want that, no thank you, no that's not going to my house" we still ended up with a carload of crap that I still have to sort through.

My family basically gave up most of our summer to empty this house, and we gave up our summer vacation to drive her car down the coast to her new place.
Well, she's my sister's problem now. Good luck.

Our stop half way down on Monday night was in Virginia, and we got there super late at night only to find out that the hotel had no power and they got us a spot at one of their other properties. Quick save there.

Finally got to meet my sister's kids. 7 and 5. Nice kids. I like them.
The little one is a firecracker.

Now we're half way back home (once again in Virginia) and we're gonna do some railfanning and boutique shopping in Ashland. We're on our time now.

It's an emotional moment for them. There's gonna be some kicking and screaming, inevitably.

My parents seemingly intend to die in the house they currently live in, unless somebody needs hospice care first. When that happens, I will have an unbelievable mess to clean up -- my dad is a packrat for car parts, and some of the "stuff" he has collected... let's say he's got an obsolte fuel-injector test rig that seems to me the size of 1/4 shipping container.
