A few weeks ago, I decided to take a leap and buy some minimalist running shoes. In my case, I bought Merrell Barefoot Run Trail Glove 2s, which have a slightly thicker, more gripping outer sole, because I do most of my running on gravel or dirt. Wary of harming myself and heedful of what some of my coworkers have said, I have been working up pretty slowly to actually running in them, but I have been wearing them an awful lot to get my feet used to the idea.

I've discovered the real problem is that I don't WANT to run in them because I really like just wearing them. Seriously comfortable. I find myself wearing them in all sorts of socially odd places to find running shoes (though I at least bought the grey ones, so there are no strange neon colors) just because they are that comfortable for me.

Anyway, though I hate to spend money, I ended up buying another pair of minimalist shoes, these ones much more casual/semi-dressy which might be more appropriate for all of the other places I go, so I hope to start running in these soon.

Please note these are not the horrid individual-toed things. I don't care how comfortable those are; they look creepy and I'm not doing it.

if they're anything like vibram 5-fingers, running in them was a fad for a while, but people have started to realize the limitations.

Huh... you found casual/semi-dressy minimalist shoes that do not have that disturbing individual-toed thing going on?

Is there a URL for that?

Increasingly, I prefer to walk around without shoes. In fact, lately, when I wear shoes, it feels like I have weights on my feet, and that they're constrained.
Something more... breezy I guess... would feel better than normal shoes.

I recently hired someone who used to work with the late great Ford II at Prodigy.
He asked me ... "does he still wear no socks?"

Anyway, it's good that the individual toe shoes are going out of style. The number of toes a person has on each foot is private and should be kept a secret.

The ones I bought for running:
http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/Product.mvc.aspx/31962M/78034/Mens/Barefoot-Ru n-Trail-Glove-2

The ones arriving today:

No toes visible. That was a requirement, both because I think it's tacky and because they are not allowed in uniform.

I like my VFF. the uniq toe concept It just feels well, all 3 pair of them.

wearing toed socks has the uniq advantage that you aren't sweat between the toes afterwards.

however, gravel is pretty challenging with the thin ones

I also have merrel tough gloves with black leather for the more formal events; pretty comfy.

There are also two pairs of vivobarefoot, which are better of keeping the feet warm, not as breathy  but a little slippy on wet floors.

I started out buying & wearing them as a contrast to the real rigid bike sidi shoes so my feet would remain strong. It involved changing the way I walk, putting the forefoot down first. This had several benefits; its the same way of motion as required for walking up stairs and cycling.

As another side effect i'm pretty much done with shoes with heel cuission - so whenever I walk into a regular shoe shop, I usually don't find anything in there I like.

A habit which entered my life with that, is to sprawl/loll/lounge (which one of these words is best?) the feet when they're hungry for action.

This shop has a special selection of the most of them:

http://www.voycontigo.de/en/barfussschuhe-shop/

probably a good place to get an overview of the available products.

these are the ones I own in black; you may be lucky and find some of those stuck in the resale channel; they're not availabe anymore :-(

I like them for looking almost like a casual shoe; and, I prefer black if not rule #1 (form follows function) overrules the color choice.

Those do look sharp (and inconspicuous). I would probably just keep wearing my running shoes all of the time, but they breathe a little TOO well in the rainy season.

I would do without heel cushion in all of my shoes now. It's that much more comfortable for me. Unfortunately, the idea of minimalist zero-drop combat boots doesn't quite work, so that's five+ days a week in something a good deal heavier.

As long as the hart rate remains above 120, everything is fine ;-)

yes, similar to my sidis:

http://www.extremesupply.com/product/Bicycle-Shoes-Sidi-Mountain/sidi-dominator-fit-shoes-14.html

they serve a purpose, but its not good for the foot.

(no, I don't wear the road bike ones, since I don't like to look like an Idiot when walking next to the bike)

They look pretty good, and not at all like a glove. I'd think most people wearing them look as if they were wearing a conventional shoe, too.

$100, though. Hrm. I need to get my finances in order before I can consider this.

Yeah, I'm normally pretty cheap when it comes to shoes. This represented all of my disposable income for the month.

They arrived. They are quite comfortable. "Gunsmoke" is a little more brown than I anticipated; in retrospect, I probably would have ordered the black ones, but it's not enough to make me send them back.

Rumors of Ford II's death are exaggerated.

Ford II's account on Uncensored got purged a couple of weeks ago, indicating that he hasn't logged in for a year, so that's pretty much the same thing as death. On the other hand, I've seen him a couple of times in meatspace, and also see him on a regular basis on Google+, so the human corresponding to Ford II is very much alive.

*You* know how many toes you have, and that's all that really matters.

It wold be a score if we could write a G+ scraper that could post in the appropriate rooms here automagically :-)

It would be a score if TweetDeck had pluggable backends that could write to things like G+ and Citadel.

I have the FB posting bit figured out.  It is a bit heavy though as it drives a browser currently.  I mostly use it to annoy people that are "friends" on FB by letting the program post random junk.
