A bit late, but I wish all of you a happy new year and stuff (only if you believe in this particular calendar, of course!)

Subject: How to search this forum

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

This seems like a really stupid question, but I cannot figure out how to search the Uncensored messages.  I tried Google, and only found others asking the same question, but with no answers.  Can somebody clue me in?

Thanks,
Chris

There's an answer to your question somewhere on this site; please search the site to find it.

Gee ... thanks.  I'll take this as authoritative snark, since it's from the sysadmin.  :s

Yep. We're very lucky to have a sysadmin how has a knack for authoritative snarkiness. When smart people kick him upside the head a couple of times he may realize that while it's fun, he could provide a slightly more informative answer to people. Those smart people tend to stay around here for a while and become part of the community.

Ok then let's try it this way: *what* are you searching for?

I think he's looking for a general search feature for the site, of which (IIRC, although I don't use the WebDev interface as you all well know) there isn't any.

I want to search for posts about problems deploying Citadel on Ubuntu i686 related to Berkeley DB.

And yes, was hoping to find a general search feature for the site.  Nite*Star = mind reader!

So I resorted to just using Google to search using the site:uncensored.citadel.org and found some posts, but no solutions.  I came up with a solution myself, which I will post in the Citadel support room (now that I know that exists).

By the way, I'm new to citadel, having just chosen it as a way to show a groupware option to the high school cyberdefense team that I coach.  Interesting product - the kids really enjoyed it after we had it running.

Cool!

And especially cool that you've stuck around after we kinda made fun of you.

I don't know how it works precisely, but I think for a site-wide search to be enabled, the indexing needs to be turned on. Where you find that option, I'm not sure. But, I suppose, further answers to this kind of question probably belongs in Citadel Support, where hopefully you'll find more authoritative answers than the silliness I could provide.

Not quite, just one of those old fuddy duddies whose stuck around this festering pool of intellectual snarkiness almost since its inception and is quite good at interpreting newbie's concerns versus the sysop's uber-snark. ;-b

All well and good for the system he's set up, fleebybaby but methinks the coach is looking for a way to search through UCG's messages. ;)

Really what I wanted to know was whether he was visiting Uncensored in general and looking around for something, or whether he was really looking to search the Citadel Support room.

My patience with Citadel support requests posted to the Lobby has reached absolute zero.

On the other hand, a site-wide search is something I would like to be able to offer. It's definitely a possibility since our index is, in fact, site-wide.
It's just a matter of writing a good user interface for it -- one that can show a list of things found in various rooms, made more complicated by the fact that you'd have to render things like calendar items, contacts, wiki articles, blog posts, etc. all together on one page.

In my defense, a Lobby is a natural starting point, and without a site-wide search (which would make it obvious where the support stuff *really* was) you are relying on my old, slightly dyslexic eyes to find the support room.  And ... that failed at first.  So yes, an interface for searching the index would be great.  Google search is adequate, but you could probably offer more citadel-specific value by writing a citadel-specific interface.

Put another way, to a n00b, there's no difference between a site-wide search or a more specific search, as we probably have no idea where to look for the specific stuff to begin with.

By the way, I liked that someone referred to me as The Coach.  If I stick around here, I might have to change my login name to that.
