Ygorl, Destroyer of Countries!

Russia better capitulate to his demands, or he will open and close his door some more.

Ladyhawke:

Ah, yeah, the oil companies should be very careful about not screwing up the environment in the course of extracting oil. I'm certainly on board with you there. The BP accident was avoidable, from what I've read, but they were too cheap to do what was right. Perhaps that's a natural consequence of capitalism?
Hehhehheh...

IG:

Reducing energy consumption, or even reducing waste in general. And, yeah, let's get rid of stupid expressions that are probably intended to be euphemisms while we're at it, since they're fairly wasteful, no?

ummm ... I'm detecting sarcasm here but I can't quite figure out what you're being sarcastic about. I do think we need to protect the environment (or more specifically, keep the environment in a condition favorable to sustaining our lives). I simply don't believe the political and non-scientific dogma that CO2 is a pollutant.

Uh, no, I wasn't being sarcastic about being rid of stupid expressions intended as euphemisms. I chose the wrong expression earlier, one I normally wouldn't use. I have no idea why I used it. So I intended agreement rather than sarcasm.

Which is kind of the problem with sarcasm sometimes, heh.

The climate continues to refuse to live up to man-made climate change models.
The upper troposphere over the equator fails to live up to the model predicted by human CO2 alarmists.

Peter k. dug a bunker into the woods...

but for some reason, he didn't start living in it, but rather shot his wife and daughter, and shot himself in the bunker afterwards.

Yup, that happened not too far from where I live. Dude spent years setting it up in a relatively inaccessible part
of a public park. After he killed his family and burned the residence, they were able to recover some image files
from a computer (I forget the details exactly re: where the computer was) and were able to triangulate their way to
the bunker using some landmarks in the photo backgrounds. Note to self: don't leave pictures of my apocalypse
compound on the computer at home.

He had a fair quantity of firearms and supplies, gas masks, body armor--he could have made quite a fight of it, but
he chose to suicide by a more conventional method rather than via law enforcement.

From the looks of that photo it doesn't appear that we're looking at a particularly large or comfortable bunker. To do it right you need backhoes, explosives, etc. and put a *huge* hole in the ground, then a massive steel and concrete ceiling, and then move all of the dirt back on top of it. The ceiling should have a slight arch to it so the load is distributed sideways rather than straight down. Oh, and you probably also want to sink lots of thermal wells so that you can run a ground source heat pump.

There are a couple of potentially problematic places, though. One is of course ventilation; you've got to have fresh air coming in somewhere and you've got to vent out the exhaust from your generator (you did install a generator, right?). I would probably put the inlet and exhaust on opposite sides of the hill to minimize recirculation. However if The Bad People want to flush you out then they could plug up the vents, or maybe even pump poison gas into them. An advantage would go to someone who could build the bunker without anyone knowing where it is, but that's hard to do at anything other than "small hole in the hill" scale. Even if you managed to build it without anyone knowing, they could eventually find you with aerial thermal imaging.

yes, to build the absolute bonker, you need some hundred slavery workers, and maybe a little better working air defense artillery until you finish.

this one was intended to become a submarine-factory:

Bart,

Interesting!  Seem to recall also hearing about a guy in the mid-west US that bought a decommed missle silo from the gov't and turned it into a house/bunker, too.

Ladyhawke, I guess the average missile site is dwarfish in comparison to bonker Alexander.

I think ~1/3rd was used by german military after WWII, the rest is rotting, and was used as a bombing / missile testing site by alied troops.

remember, in there it was supposed to have several submarines manufactured in paralell, and directly launch them into the river weser after finished.

and if you take the size of an average submarine...

Oh right - I remember seeing a show about that one, I think.  There were two entrances, as I recall.  Those pictures were pretty amazing.
