Fortunately, he doesn't have to sing in an operatic style.  Popular styles of singing seem to allow for some really fucked up techniques.

Oddly enough, 3rd Rock from the Sun.

They aired a special episode in which, for the first time, the characters experienced a nightmare (or, at least, a vivid dream).  Harry's dream was essentially as if it were an MGM musical number, and the song French Stewart elected to do was "Life Has Been Good To Me" from the Faust album.

Well, I have a video tape of this episode, and in the course of testing something, I used this tape, which was queued right up to this piece.  As sometimes happens, I started obsessing over little details related to this, and did some research on Randy Newman.  That, of course, leads to imdb and Wikipedia, where I saw the full breadth of what he's done in the past... some of the songs he wrote that other people performed and became hits, etc.  He has a recognizable style, but because he doesn't necessarily do all the performances himself, you don't necessarily know everything he has done.  But the majority of it is amazing.
