Prices on used G1's should really start to drop now that it's been discontinued.
I don't know how far Cyanogen will go with the G1 but Android 2.2 Cyanogenmod is a really sweet software stack. Considering that we usually go three years instead of the more common two before changing out our phones, and we've only had our G1's for about four months, it's nice to have the latest and greatest software. I think we can definitely go three years on this, maybe even longer.
So maybe you might want to consider waiting a little while, wait for the G2 to hit the streets, then pick up a used G1 for cheap and upgrade it.

I don't so much need a NEW phone. I just really don't much care for the one I've had for two years, and it's starting to get a little twitchy. I will look into this further.
I like my nokia 5800, but I really only need it for music and email and other such teeny-bopper crap.
The only thing is while all these mods are cool they're mods and I gather
you can't get the actual os or application upgrades from google, or can you?
I mean, I imagine g2 will use or eventually require a new level of OS which people will start writing apps for that won't work on the hacked g1 and now the hacked g1 can't be upgraded without losing all your toys...

They're one step ahead of you :)
The installer for Cyanogenmod is careful about setting aside the Google apps that are not included in the open source an
Android build, and it reinstalls them at the end.
It also blocks any update that would "unroot" your device.
It's the current version, compatible with the latest and greatest.

Except you can't plug skype into a real phone without some spensive
hardware. No I don't want to make phone calls on my computer.
That's why bluetooth headsets were invented :p

But I don't want to use a bluetooth headset, I want to use a cordless phone with speaker sometimes and a real headset (you know, mono, but in both ears) and sometimes I want to use a corded phone.
bt is a sad match for ar eal phone.
Folks like us who actually like to pick up that phone on the wall in the kitchen
are probably a dying breed.
My phone at work (Cisco VOIP) makes an actual ringing noise. It's the only
one in the building that doesn't play some annoying song.
haha, my treo does the same thing... the only cellphone in the office
that *rings*.
That's when it makes any noise at all... first few rings just vibrate...

Even the recorded "telephone bell" ringtones are starting to get a bit old.
I've got mine set to a traditional electronic ring.

I've got the bell ringer noise, but the treo seems to have this feature where
it doesn't play the sound at full attack, it fades in, so it sounds weird
to people around me when they hear a phone fade in and I get lots of looks
when my phone rings.
Full disclosure: my cell plays the opening guitar riffs from Collective Soul's "Heavy" for the default ring.
