TPM 2.0 is now part of the minimum system requirements.

Damned if I know why :-/

Anyway, the implications of this, at minimum, are that my Haswell-era motherboard would not have worked (only TPM 1.x and only if you bought a discrete chip), and that since Windows wants to bind the TPM, you will not be able to use the TPM from the Linux side of a dual-boot setup.

More clarity on this will be needed: exactly what encryption keys is W11 going to store in the TPM? What are the consequences if they are erased? (If you're using a firmware-emulated TPM, it will be erased every time you do a BIOS upgrade, at least for AMD products.)

Seems they are also limiting how old the processor can be. Something like generations that are 3 years or newer.  ( dont have details, just listening to people trying to install  it )

They really needed to get that upgrade treadmill running again, Intel and AMD must have been hurting. Machines from the last few years are now good enough you dont need to keep upgrading..  just replace when you break it.  Sooooo gotta obsolete everything and force millions to start over. ooooo revenue!

Glad i have no plans on running it at home. Now its the office's problem to replace upwards of 30000 machines. ( wont be all, but we are so far behind on refresh, i bet its a majority )

Hmm another article says TPM 1.2 is ok, but they recommend 2.0

Sounds like no one really knows what is going on, making guesses from a leaked pre-alpha?

( and i installed it as a vm with NO TPM or secure boot.. it 'just worked' )

The story seems to be, Intel: 8th generation (Coffee Lake) and newer. AMD: 2nd-gen Ryzen and newer.

*But this is in flux; install may be permitted on 7th generation for the Insider Preview builds so that Microsoft can evaluate compatibility, performance and security, they are deciding whether they want to support this.

Looks like the 2nd-gen Ryzen requirement is firmer on the AMD side because that's where fTPM 2.0 comes in.

It appears the TPM 1.2 confusion is Microsoft's fault. That requirement has since been clarified to a 2.0 minimum (although again, Insider builds may allow install on TPM-less systems for evaluation purposes, but the final product will have a hard requirement.)

This is all in flux, and there are some contradictory articles out there, but this is what I've been able to glean.

I do hope that this does not make TPM mandatory on future motherboards.  Have it there, sure whatever, but continue to make it optional for it to be enabled or not.

Someday i might upgrade. Might be an x86, who knows.

Also... there is a distinction between the kind of "field tablet" that is often a ruggedized PC with a touch screen. Some practices use them too... they're almost always resistive, not capacitive touch screens, they're designed for stylus use, and they're very industrial and industry specific.

Then you have the more modern "tablet/slate" aimed at consumer users...

You sometimes see them used at kiosks. The Vape company I buy eJuice from has one mounted on a counter that spins around to get your signature. There are some business models where they can be used...

I mean, don't the Apple employees at the Apple Store all walk around with iPads now. :D

But in general - they didn't replace traditional PCs. They supplement them.

The fridge guy yesterday had an iPad in what looked to be an otterbox case.

Used it to look up service manuals to get this POS into service mode, look up the part number he had to order, and ordered it.

Your next step is obvious. Blacklist his sites out of your network. No

point in contributing to a site owned by the enemy.

Agreed. That leaves me, however, with my original problem: I am looking for a good site for tech news -- one that espouses neither Redmond values nor San Francisco values. For years I was reading The Register, but as of late their San Francisco office has become more dominant on the site and it's intolerable.

It's "allowlist" and "denylist" now, you know ;-p

BIND still uses "master" and "slave" for DNS servers. Kudos to them for not caving in to the 0.001% of the people who are self-appointed language dictators.

Has 'doze 11 been RTM yet? I wonder if they're just keeping the demo pool controllable until RTM.

I can't imagine Microsoft doesn't understand that if they end support for ... what, tens of millions of still very usable computers ... in one swift action, it's going to create a gigantic pool of equipment on which people will try Linux for the first time? And like it? And maybe not bother buying a new computer to run 'doze 11?

IBM made a fatal mistake like that. This might be their moment of stupidity. "assuming" and "underestimating" are never good things.

I suspect They are banking on the business market to play along like good dogs ( many will ) and pull enough consumers with them to remain compatible to pull it off with minimal casualties. Long haul planning. Like Democrats. Lose a few battles but the war is generations long.

Or...   the OS market isn't big enough to care now, and their $ is being made on the cloud side. Could just be a last hail-mary, or helping out Intel and AMD ( and the PC companies ) as they exit the OS market since nearly all their core products are running on the lased-cloud model now. And since they are clearly supporting Linux for their current stuff ( even edge and teams.. )  they are about to walk away from a true desktop OS. ( windows 12 )

or im just dreaming and my hatred is clouding my view of what is happening, and they just feel they still control enough market to force it down everyone throat. And you will ask for another.

the Dell I have from the office is one of those 2-in-1's with a keyboard that can sorta fold under and become a tablet. It has a touch screen.

As a tablet, it's stilly and awkward. "Tent mode" doesn't make sense either.

And the laptop itself is kind of a piece of junk. Didn't really survive WFH in the pandemic without developing hardware issues (and it was purchased in Jan 2020), and WFH should have been easier than commuting daily with carrying it in a backpack.

A lot of github/gitlab projects are changing their "master" branch to become a "main" branch. My company is one of those.

We have to be sensitive. Our consultants are mission-critical and they're based in the DR.

We have also ditched whitelist/blacklist.

Some of this is reasonable, or not crazy unreasonable. Some of it is not. So I have mixed feelings.

Ultimately, if somebody wants to be all offended by standard language usage that they fail to understand, that's on them. I posted a more extreme example in Bottom Feeders> the other day.

their lives matter?

Not exactly. The BDSM crowd is pretty diverse. There's a big "black and queer and proud of it" segment who, among others, shun any discussion of "race play", maybe also shun the M/s terminology.

A friend of mine got some huge blowback for even *discussing* "race play" at one of her panel discussion events. Ended up having to apologize for "causing harm".

She organizes the most thoughtful discussions, and she didn't deserve the blowback; the whole panel was framed like "if you're going to do this, be very careful." So it was a nuanced, responsible airing of opinions. But there is a loud segment of people who will fight tooth and nail against any discussion that hurts their feelings or makes them "feel unsafe." It's like conflating discussing something with condoning it, or at least insisting on trigger warnings...
