I have never understood the attraction of an ocean cruise as a vacation. Part of this is the indelible association I make between cruise ships and food poisoning, I suppose.

Anyway, I stumbled on this Harper's article from January 1996 by David Foster Wallace, who underwent a weeklong cruise with much the enthusiasm that he would undergo a colonoscopy.

I said "part." It just doesn't hold much attraction for me. Most of the activities touted as benefits are things I don't enjoy, and I particularly dislike the sensation of being trapped in one location with a bunch of people I may or may not like. It's a pretty darned big location, but I'd hate to get out a ways and discover that it's not big enough.

Two things you have to know about going on a cruise: 1) go on a boat that holds at least 3000 people, you'll never see the same people twice except the ones you have dinner with, and 2) get a room with a balcony.

If you don't do those two things, you definetly won't have a good time.

Sorry about the site being down tonight, folks. Our server had two disk failures. One drive died and I replaced it, but the second drive died during the array rebuild. It's taking some time to get everything up and running again.

Don't you already have large hunks of external disk sitting around doing nothing in the data center? <GRIN>

I try to keep my stuff on my own hardware. However, Uncensored is in fact running in our cloud right now. I'll have it moved back after I get my server back on its feet.

That explains why is feels so light and fluffy right now.
