Well then, welcome! And die in a car fire! (That's the friendly customary greeting around here, dontcha know.) Always a pleasure to have old-skool

Citadel veterans around.

I always thought it was a shame that the few different areas that had very strong Citadel communities never really grew into one bigger community. Even when node-based rooms started allowing us to have more interaction across the nation - it just never really took off. Then the Internet showed up and The BBSes all kind of died. Thing is, the way social media is going - I feel like this is the real back-alley of the Internet today.

Well, I finally made it through a full cycle... although there were quite a few rooms I just <g>oto-ed right past.

In some ways, I miss the dialup days of BBSing.

Conversations were much more entertaining back then.

Or maybe we were all younger a little more insane.

I think that when BBS's were all we had, we had a focused place for discussion and storytelling. Now too many people, spread out those opportunities.

I miss the dial-up days too. I miss the simplicity of machines you could understand and manipulate directly. I miss the decentralized nature of telecommunications, the DIY quality of it. All this talk about how the Internet was causing the Democratization of information - turns out that was BS. It caused these authoritarian City States like Facebook and Twitter to arise on the information highway.

Which is a damn shame.

Internet showed up and The BBSes all kind of died. Thing is, the way

social media is going - I feel like this is the real back-alley of the

Internet today.

Even on the Internet, the BBSs that were able to migrate there did pretty well. Dialup died in a hurry.

The dynamics became different, though. Since you no longer had to connect to a node close to you, we didn't need as many of them. This unfortunately was taken to the extreme, and now many new users don't even remember a time when there were more than four web sites.

I still have hope that the ultra-nazis who run the big socials will continue to become so repressive that it forces the re-democratization of the Internet.
The more Mark Zuckerberg (aka Hitler 2.0) tightens his grip, the more frustrated users slip through his fingers.

This BBS doesn't cost me anything to run. It will be here forever. And I'm always keeping an eye on distributed/federated social networking projects. If one ever manages to break out into the mainstream, it *will* be implemented in Citadel.

Ig... today, Facebook sent me a message that was basically, "Your account may be compromised, log in to change your password and verify recent changes."

I did. The changes were things I had shared like a link to Trump's "Did you get banned on Facebook unfairly" page.

I changed my password. Said, "No, I really meant to post this shit..."

Now I can't log in. It says the password I chose (a fairly easy to remember one) is wrong.

So here I am.

You might be right. You... your users... should support my Citadel.

wallofhate.com HTTP

secure.wallofhate.com HTTPS

Telnet.wallofhate.com (telnet)

And my small handful of users should support yours.

Because we're in this together, at this point. Add content. Make rooms, make posts. Add value. Create an alternative.

It is all we've got.

Also... my SSL/HTTPS site doesn't seem to work for some users, especially people using iPhone and Safari Mobile. I am not sure what the problem is. Don't know how to fix it. Log in using the HTTP site, and then change the port to 4916 - and you'll get an HTTPS site... but the cert is self signed - it will still say it is insecure.

Just another way they seem to be making it hard for the little guys.

discussion and storytelling. Now too many people, spread out those
opportunities.

That is missing, plus there are a whole lot of Internet users who don't want to read more than a soundbite - 3 or 4 lines at a time. One of the things that provided context also was the constraints of the local calling area in which locations were common settings and places to the participants in the conversation.

Hi I'm new and yours was the first message I read.

Welcome Dust Council. In the normal way of things I should tell you "Die in a car fire.." But in this case I will just apologize to you that my words were the first you read.

Nah... I was always an extraordinary C-64 Warez h4x0rZ...

I ran Cit 86, Novu 86 and Asgard 86 on a NEC v10 with a 140mb ESDI hard drive... for about 10 seconds it was the largest West Coast C-64 Warez board... also Amiga, ST, and PC...

It was called The Amiga Archives - and seemed totally business upfront...

But oh the private rooms.

I had a Newtek Digitek scanner with a color wheel and a stack of Penthouse, Hustler and Playboy back issues going back to the early 70s.

For a little period of time I was probably the preeminent provider of digital porn on the West Coast. Long before Larry Flint realized that Hustler.com was going to eclipse his print publication.

And I just gave it all away for free.

Sure hope the statute of limitations has run out on that.

If not... all just bragging and bravado. I couldn't Sysop a BBS if my life depended on it. I'm a functional idiot.
