the seat in the back of my 911 is perfect for a small child, but it's not legal because you have to have them sit in a booster seat. The booster won't actually fit back there, but the seat itself is sized perfectly.
I sat in the back once or twice while a friend was test driving. basically if you're not a kid, you have to pretzel yourself in with your face smeared against the back window and hope the driver doesn't hit too many bumps, no reasonable adult would ever sit back there.

After discussion, the thought is that I don't necessarily need to REPLACE my MR2 so much as have a vehicle available to carry kids if necessary. If I'm going to insure a third car, it perhaps ought to offer some capability that my current one does not. To that end, I'm kind of eyeing 4Runners of the same era, which can frequently be had for a song around here (and which my brother drives and for which he has parts and expertise).

I'm also looking at other random, amusing vehicles. We might take a look at a 1997 Land Rover Discovery today. I'm not sure I want a car which measures gallons per mile, but we'll see.

I'm not a big fan of american anything automotive, but those red jeep cherokees seems to last forever. I see lots of them all the time around here from the 80s and 90s. They must have been built like tanks.

Oh please oh please oh please.

I found a 1973 Capri 2600 on Craigslist for $3500. It was garaged for over a decade, undriven, and has only 42,500 original miles.

I grew up in the back of a 1974 with the same engine. It was my parents' first new car and the only thing Dad got in the divorce. Later it came to my brother and I briefly drove it in high school. Every car I've owned since has been a pale imitation.

Needs some interior work, but if the workings are as described, it's a steal.
Hope hope hope hope hope.

(And yes, $3500 blows my planned budget by a good $1000, but I'm willing to fix and sell my MR2 for this.)

The previous plan being to buy a vehicle to supplement my MR2, but the Capri is not actually much heavier, and has a great deal more room for engine. My brother/mechanic has pointed out that a turbo Supra motor would fit in nicely.

I'm trying to remember the capri. I remember being impressed at one point "THAT is the capri?" but I can't remember what it looks like. I will suffer the google.

If you like the german driving things, get an mk2 gti 1985-1992.

Many fond memories of TMDF II. :)

I ought to get one just for nostalgia.

me too.

So me, of generally bad luck with air conditioing in cars, who has never had an AC system work for more than 4-5 years, got an amazing 12 years out of the A/C in my current gti, until alas, just yesterday, it stopped working.
Sort of. It still cools the air, but nowhere near as much. I put some more refridgerant in, and it didn't help, but it didn't get worse, so I'm sort of at a loss as to what's wrong.
Hmmm... never thought to ask the computer maybe it knows.

blah. computer knows nothing about A/C which seems a bit odd. It can tell me that my fuel gauge has a short and that my radio's right rear speaker isn't working right, but it knows absolutely nothing about the A/C. Maybe I should use a better diag system.

This looks very much like the one we had when I was a kid, though ours was a more orangish red.  I've got a picture somewhere of the four of us standing behind it when I was maybe 8 months old; it's the only family pic I have ever seen.

I slept horribly and dreamed (when I did sleep) that he had called and refused to sell it to me.  I woke up very tired and more than a little confused.

Going to go see the guy about it tomorrow.

the ford capri was the european alternative to the opel manta; not even remotely as successfull.

I guess for the american market it was simply to small & light, since a camaro of that time would weight twice as much and double the size.

Supposedly they have a concept car being devloped into a new production Capri, but it bears only token resemblance to what I consider a Capri. Pity, since I really love the look of the 70s ones and would like to see what could be done with modern materials along that line.

Most likely the problem is that your Kompressor does not dance. Although I would expect that to be an, it either works or doesn't work, sorta thing.

So maybe a leak somewhere. The computer won't know about that. No sensors.

No, can't be a leak... adding coolant would've helped, if only slightly.

I took some pics today:

We went to our evening Bible study in it, with the kids stuffed in the back.
It is definitely not an everyday sort of occurrence, but it's possible. My wife drove home. I don't think I'm in any danger of having her borrow it all of the time.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Or did you think that all Christians resemble Mike Myers as "The Church Lady" ?

Actually, I thought all Christians looked more like Dana Carvey in drag.   (Did you notice "in a hot rod" was a link?)
