Some people really need to get a life. Or be beat with a bat.

Never really heard modern Santa be referred to as Pagan before. I see

him as a commercializing of a ( whatever you pick as its roots, no
need to get into that one here ) holiday.  Santa is a capitalist, in

effect.  Perhaps some of the non-commercialized conceptual roots
might have been tied to some pagan concepts to aid in the Christians

usurping the far older Holiday, but not the 'Santa' as the modern
individual we associate Xmas to in our lifetime.

Santa is a red person who gives stuff away for free. That is pretty much the definition of a Communist.

Well, only nearly so. If the stuff he gives away for from somebody else he is a Communist. If the stuff is not stolen from other people he gets a pass.

Tho, i might say he was more socialist than communist as he has captive workers toiling away for 'his generosity', i'm ok with that definition. But as he is a big fat read billboard to sell product and created as such, that is why i was saying capitalist.

It was the anti-pagan angle i was really talking about, i guess i sort of muddied the waters a bit.

( for what its worth, right or wrong i'm more old school when i was taught about about things like socialism and Communism.   Communism is a mutually agreed sharing. Socialism is forced sharing. )

Sadly, they are probably also hoping for a lazy sysop that can't be bothered to use the same passwd for root as they do email, etc. It's sadly a common occurrence.

It is. Some dipshit has been trying to dictionary attack the server on its POP3 port. They're doing it fast enough that eventually Citadel runs out of memory and has to restart, so if anyone gets logged out unexpectedly, now you know why.

The funny thing is that I imagine said dipshit is expecting that once he cracks the password to an account he can use it to turn our server into a spam sending machine. He'll be disappointed to find out that there are only three or four of us who can send Internet mail, so any account he manages to crack will have no more privileges than a free account he can set up here like anyone else.

Tho i'm too old for this, but it sounds like a great business opportunity.

You contract out. "my web site is being attacked by someone"  the 'firm' will go thru your logs, track down the offenders via various methods, and once found, they are picked up in an unmarked van, taken out to the country and beat with a stick and pictures of their dead mangled bodies are posted on public sites, before payment is rendered.

Make the risk high enough, it might cut down on the nonsense. Currently there is almost zero risk.

Pretty much.

I have seen advertisements for captcha solving services that integrate with spambots. The idea is your spambot integrates with the captcha solving service via an api. Then the your spambot goes in the wild spamming innocent people, and when it finds a captcha, it sends it to the solving service, who passes it to some guy who is solving them for 3 cents each thousand.

I guess technically they all are, since they were all created by "the architect" to give people a purpose ( or engineer, or whatever the hell they called the new guy in the last matrix movie.  Which i have heard its not worth the time to watch )

Went to the grocery a bit ago, get a couple of items for my wife.    From what i can see most of the shelves are 1/2 empty. Not bare, but LOTS of holes  There were TONS of people. crashing their carts into each other.  pushing people out of the way to grab food off a shelf.  it was a nut house. Is one of the large chain stores, not as big as a Walmart, but has food, some clothing, etc  "Kroger market place", if you have ever been in one.

Sure, I expected a few last minute party goers getting stuff " crap, we need beer and chips **food run*** ". but these were regular shoppers. .regular food ..

Well, many of our local wild parties are done with regular food. We cook it into something cool and then we eat it all throuout the afternoon and evening. It is great.

We also have some junk food and chips to help pass those down.

Tho it may be slowly changing due to the influx of transplants, traditionally the demographic here would be lots of beer and chips. ( another rant of mine, last couple of years, out of the blue: Tearing up every bit of farmland possible, and every tree, as fast as they can, for houses/apartments/warehouses )

I've been doing New Years Eve the same way here for a decade and a half. Closest friends and family, and we break out the deep fryer and serve fried appetizers. French fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, pigs in blankets, spinach and cheese bites, cheesesteak spring rolls, buffalo chicken spring rolls, jalapeno poppers were on the plate this year. I'm probably forgetting something. Between that and what people brought, there was a lot of food.

We had to go with the jalapeno poppers stuffed with cheddar cheese, because apparently there is a global cream cheese shortage in progress right now.
Go figure.
