Subject: Re: Easy Installer on Raspberry Pi 4B

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello Paul,

Most likely 'config.guess' and 'config.sub' that are used by easy install are too old to guess your particular system.
I had the same problem and I mentioned that here in the forum hoping that any developer would read it and decide to renew these files.
But this didn't take place in the past, maybe it will in the future. --> Dear developers, if one of you would read my post, I would be glad to talk to you. Please unhide and say hello to us :-)

In the meantime let me talk about your problem. I assume you have downloaded 'install' from 'http://easyinstall.citadel.org', renamed it to 'install.sh', gave 'install.sh' execution rights and
run 'install.sh' and after a while the installation process stopped with the error message you have posted.

Well, when 'install.sh' runs it downloads some archives from 'http://easyinstall.citadel.org' which contain all files that are necessary for the installation process. And in some of those archives
you should replace 'config.guess' and 'config.sub' in order to solve your problem.

So please follow the instructions bellow:
- Download the actual 'config.guess' and 'config.sub' from
  'https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/config.git/plain/config.guess' and
  'https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/config.git/plain/config.sub', respectively.
- Download 'libcitadel-easyinstall.tar.gz', 'citadel-easyinstall.tar.gz' and 'webcit-easyinstall.tar.gz' from 'http://easyinstall.citadel.org'.
- Unpack 'libcitadel-easyinstall.tar.gz', 'citadel-easyinstall.tar.gz' and 'webcit-easyinstall.tar.gz' to 'libcitadel', 'citadel' and 'webcit'.
- Replace 'config.guess' and 'config.sub' in 'libcitadel', 'citadel' and 'webcit'. You will find 'config.guess' and 'config.sub' directly bellow 'citadel' and 'webcit' but in 'libcitadel' bellow the subdirectory 'conftools'.
- Pack 'libcitadel', 'citadel' and 'webcit' to 'libcitadel-easyinstall.tar.gz', 'citadel-easyinstall.tar.gz' and 'webcit-easyinstall.tar.gz'.

Now you should persuade 'install.sh' to use your modified archives instead of downloading them from 'http://easyinstall.citadel.org'. Therefore please following the instructions bellow:

a) Load 'install.sh' by an editor of your choice.

b) -Search for

    ########################################################################
    # Install libcitadel
    ########################################################################'

-Look sixteen rows bellow for the following string:

    FILENAME=$LIBCITADEL_SOURCE; download_this

-Assuming your modified 'libcitadel-easyinstall.tar.gz' resides in /root/citadel you should replace the string from above by

    FILENAME=$LIBCITADEL_SOURCE; cp /root/citadel/$FILENAME . # download_this

c) -Search for

    ########################################################################
    # Install Citadel Server
    ########################################################################

-Look thiry rows bellow for the following string:

    FILENAME=$CITADEL_SOURCE; download_this

-Assuming your modified 'citadel-easyinstall.tar.gz' resides in /root/citadel you should replace the string from above by

    FILENAME=$CITADEL_SOURCE; cp /root/citadel/$FILENAME . # download_this

d) -Search for

    ########################################################################
    # Install WebCit
    ########################################################################

-Look twenty rows bellow for the following string:

    FILENAME=$WEBCIT_SOURCE; download_this

-Assuming your modified 'webcit-easyinstall.tar.gz' resides in /root/citadel you should replace the string from above by

    FILENAME=$WEBCIT_SOURCE; cp /root/citadel/$FILENAME . # download_this

When you performe all these steps from above I would assume that the installation process will then run smootly for you, at least it will not stop anymore due to old 'config.guess' and 'config.sub' files.

Good luck and have fun

Markus

Subject: Fetching mails from pop3 accounts works only partly. Why?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Dear developers and other knowing people here,

I inted to configure an accont of my citadel system in such a way that it fetches emails from a pop3 account of a different mailing system.

Therefore I did the following with webcit:

a) I went to 'rooms' and chose 'Mail (inbox)'.

b) I went to 'Advanced', then to 'edit or delete this room' and finaly to 'remote retrieval'.

c) Then I add 'remote host', 'user name', 'password', 'keep messages on server' and 'interval' of the pop3 account that I would fetch emails from and store them in 'Mail (inbox)' of the account of my citadel system.

Now that I have observed the behaviour of my citadel system for a while I can report that it works, but only partly. That means some mails get downloaded, some not. Why is that? Is the fetch process faulty or are there other explanations for that behavior?

I would be glad to here from you. Any advice is welcome.

Regards

Markus

Hi Markus,

I thinks Citadel has been successfully installed following your instructions, for which, thank you very much! I say, I think, because there were quite a few warning messages about truncations and the like, but I did get a successful completion message in the end.

I'm now trying to muddle my way through the documentation. This is my first attempt at any kind of mail server so wish me luck!

Thanks again.

Markus, you're looking for the Citadel Development room..[look to the left]

But have no fear, your issue about config.guess has already been logged and noted...

It's not for lack of caring.. just too few of us, and lot is going on...

We will ultimately get to the problem.

Continue to do whatever you can to document and communicate.

Hmm, I did the easy install on my RPI 4B. it fired right up, no warnings.

It doesn't bind to the proper ports tho, SMTP, IMAP, POP3. probably a root user install issue.  I may reinstall it.

Hi warbaby,

First of all: Thank you for your response and for your kind explanation of the situation.

Honestly speaking, I was really close to bury citadel. Even though citadel is a non-profit software driven by volunteers you expect some attention from the people behind in order to get anwers and to solve your problems. When you say there are many things that need to be done, but you are less people to do it, how can we help?

If you expect me to report what I have observed so far - that's easy. It's not only the issue with config.guess/config.sub. This is what I have already mentioned in the Citadel support room:

-  (Maybe) Problems:

   * The files config.guess/config.sub are outdated, so system guess is limited --> See post [#] Sun Jan 24 2021 16:19:47 EST from markus

   * Webcit behaves unusual with dots and underscores in user names used to connect to citadel --> See post [#] Thu Jan 07 2021 23:03:37 EST from markus

   * Using the restart routine in webcit citadel does not restart correctly  --> See post [#] Thu Jan 07 2021 21:48:56 EST from markus

   * Fetching mails from pop3 accounts on other mail servers seems to work only partly. --> See post [#] Sun Jan 24 2021 17:05:47 EST from markus

   * When addressing smart hosts it does not work for me. On my new citadel system I did address a smart host excatly as I did on my older citadel system. It works on the older system but not on the new one. --> See post  [#] Tue Jan 19 2021 17:47:56 EST from markus

-  Requests:

   * Citadel should not modify the header of email copies that it places in the sent mail folder  --> See post [#] Tue Jan 19 2021 17:01:05 EST from markus

   * The web page https://www.citadel.org/easyinstall.html does currently not show the new instructions on how to download the Easy Install script -> See post [#] Fri Jan 01 2021 09:32:09 EST from markus

   * The web page https://www.citadel.org/how_to_install_a_certificate_signed_by_a_recognized_certificate_authority.html currently mentions a too short key length --> See post [#] Mon Jan 04 2021 11:57:42 EST from markus

   * The web page https://www.citadel.org/using_your_citadel_calendar_and_contacts_in_thunderbird.html currently presents a solution that is outdated. A new solution would be welcome. --> See post [#] Fri Jan 08 2021 15:58:31 EST from markus

   * It would be great, if one could could migrate from an older citadel system on host a) to a newer citadel system on host b) without updating citadel system on host a first. --> See post [#] Tue Jan 12 2021 14:09:35 EST from markus

-  Questions:

   * How can one run citadel as a service on system boot using Easys Install functionality? --> See post [#] Wed Jan 20 2021 13:23:34 EST from markus

It would be very kind if you could spend some of your rare time on commenting the bullet points in the near future.  Thank you very much in advance.

Markus

Subject: text client not accepting commands

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello,

Today I tried to log into the text client on my citadel server and after logging in found that I could not use any of the commands.  The only thing that partially worked was the "?" which responded with "One of ..."  Even the (T)erminate command did not work and I had to kill the citadel process in order to get out of the citadel client

My citadel server is running on a CentOS 7 VPS and is the lastest version (same as used by uncensored) installed using the Easy Install.

My first attempt to connect exited with the error that the file citadel.rc was not found.  After skimming through the Doc and FAQ I found mention of the citadel.rc file but not the content that was needed.  I "assumed" that the file just needed to be present and could contain extra options ie setting the editor to use vim or something else.

On a hunch I wondered if the source code contained a sample citadel.rc so I finally went to the download secion and under souce code, found a link to tar file for just the text client.

After downloading and extracting, sure enough there was a citadel.rc file with "lots" of content.

I copied this over to /usr/local/citadel and suddenly I had working command in the text client.

I am posting this because originally I had typed out a long message describing my system and what I had tried so far before post to the Support room.

After deleting the original post, I decided to actually describe what I did in case someone else might run into the same problem.

I think I just noticed that you're most likely to get the [not found] error when a post is going to end up on a "new page" in the web client. That is, the message you are replying to is on page [1] - but your post will be on page [2]. Not sure if that might help - but when it happens, I hit F5, and "resubmit the form" and it works.

Think of me as tier 1 support at your ISP. I'm going to read a page, ask you to reboot your router, and then say I'm going to have to escalate the issue and get someone to call you back.

But at least you know there is SOMEONE who is aware you have an issue, and will try and get it into the backlog of other issues the actually smart guys are trying to fix. :)

So as the subject says I'm trying to configure nntp access for my rooms on a private server how would I do this?

NNTP service is enabled by default. Just point your NNTP clients to your server's IP address, port 119. You can use authentication.

You can access the rooms as they were newsgroups. They are hanging from the ctdl. top level name.

PAN (Linux) does not show the threads but slrn does and performs well.

If anybody uses the NNTP access with other clients, please, give us your experience.

NNTP posting is still not implemented in Citadel. Are the developers working on read-write NNTP access? That would be great! Also news feed management to be able to receive and send feeds to other NNTP servers (Usenet).

From the Administration Menu, open:

Domain names and Internet mail configuration

Then fill the box at Smart hosts with the FQDN or IP address of your smarthost. That easy. The hard part is setting up a smarthost...

Hello again,

In order to test sending emails via citadel my email user agent is connects to citadel via SMTP MSA Serverport 587. Citadel itself is configured to forward each email to a smart host whoes connection parameters are set bellow Administration / Domain names and Internet mail configuration / Smart hosts. But it seems that citadel does not forward incoming emails to that smart host. Assuming connection parameters are correct, what could be the reason?

Markus

On the first place test the hostname you set up at Citadel resolves the correct IP address from the server Citadel runs. Then test, from the same server, the connection to port 25 (in case of this is the port) from the smarthost. You can do:

telnet smarthost 25

You should get some output like this:

Escape character is '^]'.
220 server.domain ESMTP Postfix

If above tests are successful, check the log of the smarthost server in case of having access to it. If not, ask the sys admin from the smarthost server for the activity that comes from your Citadel's server, if there is any.
