so i noticed this week that the site was not in the best of shapes as
links were broken en all but i was curious about how it was doing
currently cause i still find a few links (rarely mind you) that are
broken or give a blank page, like the getting started guide which i
think is kinda needed for the software to be 'run' properly.

We moved www.citadel.org to a new web server and it's running nginx instead of apache, so there could be a few issues there. I've fixed a couple of broken pieces but if you can point out anywhere there's still a problem I'd be grateful.

Since the Citadel software has wiki rooms we could actually run www.citadel.org *on* Citadel; the only thing stopping us is the substantial effort it would take to move the site and its knowledge base over.

I know you said you checked to make sure the port wasn't blocked, but that error message seems to say otherwise.

Have you checked to see if you can connect to gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com on port 25? Also try a recipient other than GMail. Google are right bastards about what they'll accept and what they won't.

Shoot, I did, but I realize now it's because I was VPN'd into my work.  Closed the VPN and nope, port was blocked. Thanks for the help!

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Good Day everyone,

I hope I posted this in the right section for posts. I usually do not like bothering people but I hit a wall I cannot pass. i have been trying to log into a basic email server I have setup using a tutorial that did not work correctly, My problem is every time I log in, it accepts the username and password but loops back to the login screen. i tried everything I can think of. I feel like I am missing something and I apologize for my lack of experience but I would like it if someone could help, thank you in advance and have a good day.

sincerely,

kensterh

P.S. here is the end of a few logs if that helps.

In the meanwhile this is worked on, just curious, are there still
plans to support the 'collaboration' functions in Citadel, such as
calendar and address books?

Yes. These are being completely overhauled as part of a substantial rework of WebCit that is underway. The current WebCit is receiving bugfixes only because it's 22 years old and has turned into spaghetti. The new WebCit is being built as a REST and DAV focused platform with modern client-side web framework. Expect to see significant improvements in the calendar and address books.

Thanks very much for the information!

If I may, and just for when devs have time to take a look at this stuff, I'd like to summarize the few issues I have seen so far with Citadel calendar. Just as easy reference FWIW.

When creating an event in Webcit calendar, in the attendees tab, adding users doesn't seem to work. I expected Citadel user list to be full with the user list, of course, but it is empty. Only current user's personal contacts appear.
Oh, and even when saving the event with a personal contact, the attendee doesn't get saved.
There may be other non-working attendee-related stuff, but that may be just redundant by now...

In another thing, I also tried the lightning and synckolab connectors with latest Thunderbird, which is 52.7 as of now.
Synckolab installed but did not start. Perhaps it got very outdated, and I tried downloading from both mozilla addons and gargan's websites. A comment from the developer made me think this may be getting abandoned:
https://github.com/corinis/synckolab/issues/8

Finally, there's something funny with Webcit calendar's day view. The event seems graphically out of phase with its actual hour. I attached a screenshot.

Well, again, thanks for your attention.

I am suddenly getting error messages that indicate the number of users is more than allowed. Trying to open with Webcit:

This server is already serving its maximum number of users and cannot accept any additional logins at this time. Please try again later or contact your system administrator.

Mozilla Thunderbird is also totally confused connecting , unable to send emails.

Have I been compromised? I am using a Debian server. Any clues as to what is going on?

We moved www.citadel.org to a new web server and it's running nginx instead of apache, so there could be a few issues there. I've fixed a couple of broken pieces but if you can point out anywhere there's still a problem I'd be grateful.

Since the Citadel software has wiki rooms we could actually run www.citadel.org *on* Citadel; the only thing stopping us is the substantial effort it would take to move the site and its knowledge base over.

well here is part 2 a day late but we had a 'slight' emergency with our server room as in a heat pipe broke and was pumping heat INTO the server room but now i am back to give part two of the broken links i found so here goes

*clicks a few links* wait a minute this is a repeat! well seems like i was done already well oeps but if i did miss anything well that is my bad then

Subject: Citadel as modular software?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hope this place is still the right one for such a curious small question, I couldn't tell when looking at all the other boards here...

Would it be good idea to make Citadel "modular" instead of everything hard integrated?
I mean, such that user could actually select which components from Citadel to install. For example, only installing mail server and tasks, or installing everything except mail server itself, and so on.

Subject: Building against easy install

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I would like to try "fixing" or adding one or two functions to a Citadel component, i.e., just modifying one or two .c files from the source code but at the same time retaining full compatibility with Citadel easy install.

I read easy install provides latest "stable", while the git source code repo provides latest cutting edge at the moment which could potentially be unstable or even broken.
The idea is testing stuff on my current Citadel test installation on Centos 7. I already went through the "Compiling against Easy Install" article and the easy install script itself.

Can I change stuff in source code and test by just running easy install someway to update changes? Or did I get confused and need to just clone from git?

In the git repo, BTW, I see 3 "branches": master, check messages, and xmpp rework. Only master -the "unstable" one- looks recent. Would the other 2 be the "stable" ones?

Thanks in advance.

Check the version of libical that you're using. If it's substantially different from the one we deliver, either upgrade or downgrade.

The very newest version of Citadel is compatible with libical3, which forced some API changes.

The command "./sendcommand RWHO" from your Citadel server directory might give a clue. It could be an inbound spam bomb or it could be runaway clients.

Still working on it ... sorry about that! The move to nginx screwed up some of the links and we're still figuring it out. :(

We always welcome new translations!

Look in the ./webcit/po/webcit/ directory and you will find the "language packs" for the user interface. Just create one for the language that you're implementing and it should compile right in to the software. Then send it in so it can become part of the mainline package.

You can also do the same for ./citadel/po/citadel-setup/ to create a language pack for the setup program.

It's a good idea to have that kind of software available, and there are plenty of folks doing so. Some of them are very good!

But, Citadel is not that kind of software. It's designed to deliver maximum functionality with minimum integration. Out of the box and onto the Internet.

Stick with master. :)

The other branches are old. We tend to remove experimental branches when the experiments end and/or when they get integrated into the main line.

There are sometimes periods of development when we maintain stable and unstable branches. Right now we are not in one of those periods.
