//usr/local/citadel# openssl s_client -connect mail.local.ba:25
-starttls smtp/

/CONNECTED(00000003)/

/didn't find starttls in server response, trying anyway.../

What test is that? Is mail.local.ba your Citadel server?

If so, your test is checking for *inbound* encrypted SMTP, which is not what you asked for.

To test *outbound* encrypted SMTP, enable the c_smtpclient_try_starttls option, and then send a message to a destination (gmail?) that can validate whether the message was received with encrypted SMTP. Alternatively, you can sniff port 25 using tcpdump or Wireshark, and watch the message go out. If you see the STARTTLS option being performed (and the rest of the transaction is unreadable because it's encrypted) then you know it worked.

I did that, but no result.

conf putval|c_smtpclient_try_starttls|1

200 setting 'c_smtpclient_try_starttls' to '1'

sendcommand: processing ended.

Again when I send mail to gmail he say "did not encrypt this message".

Subject: ssh access

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Can't find in Documentation or FAQ how to access via ssh.

I can login telnet without issue.

What is the magic sauce to access a Citadel BBS over ssh?

Thanks,

Does Citadel support ssh keyauth?

Citadel doesn't support SSH at all. If you are using SSH to connect to the text mode client (as many of us are), authentication happens in your SSH server, not in Citadel.

Subject: easy install aborts

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

hey forum,

i hope i do post it correctly here. if not pls don't hesitate to call me a) firsttimer b) newbie c) noob d) blond - and move my post to where it would belong better.

so after trying in vain to kinda run citadel out of the box for my machine i decided to try the easy install-thing.
ya... it worked and worked... and failed in the end.

it happened in the Installing Citadel...-part. everything until then seemed to work good (aaaaand loooooooong, of course - but this was clear from the beginning on)
first warning was:
configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --with-libical, --disable-threaded-client

then a bit of a longer one:
checking for patch... /usr/bin/patch
/tmp/citadel-build.513/citadel/missing: Unknown `--is-lightweight' option
Try `/tmp/citadel-build.513/citadel/missing --help' for more information
configure: WARNING: 'missing' script is too old or missing

and the the reason for aborting
checking ldap.h usability... no
checking ldap.h presence... no
checking for ldap.h... no
configure: error: OpenLDAP development headers were not found and are required.  More info: http://www.citadel.org/doku.php/installation:start
 Citadel Easy Install is aborting.
The last few lines above this message may indicate what went wrong.

so i'd say... something wasn't handled correctly. maybe this is a bug?
i said in the beginning of easy install that the installer is allowed to install every dependency needed on my system. it could have installed OpenLDAP then (i mean i don't need and won't use it)

or whatever else was going wrong.

my question now is: how do i get on without losing everything that was compiled up to now?`

thanks for all hints and solutions in advance
cheers
jimmy

ok ok, i searched the forum for possible other issues like that.. and found a solution someone suggested

apt-get install libldap2-dev

of course i did that (sudo) and then? i tried starting easy install again under a root account

and - voila - it aborted again (still at Installing Citadel...)

again me... and again i found a very helpful suggestion here in the forum...
someone suggested to

apt install gettext (under root or sudo)

that installed the needed thing and
easy install went smoothly until the end.

why do i write it down here again? because sometime someone needs to have all of those hints collected in one place. maybe the tag rpi 3 would be helpful as well since i installed in there, using raspbian stretch lite

PS: if there's some maintainer of the easy install-precedure reading this... pls update the process since it's not really easy with said bugs

I think there's a wiki for collecting stuff into one place.

*tappity tip tap tap*

Well, not quite a wiki, but there's this:

http://citadel.org/doku.php?id=faq:start#installation

Not sure if this up to date, though.

Even when Citadel is designed to integrate all functions out of the box, can it still be very well used without some of the functions?

I mean, there was this case where mail server was not required, so I only disabled the port in the settings and no more error logs.

Can this be considered still a "valid" use for Citadel, or would it be more of "hacky"?

Thanks.

Nobody is going to complain if you are only using a portion of Citadel's feature set.

Share and enjoy.

Subject: Improved "Delivery Status Notification" messages in Citadel 920

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

For anyone who has asked for outbound email bounces being a little more clear than

"abcxyz@example.com: 550 (Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or relaying denied)"

You'll be happy to know that we have restored the old behavior, starting with Citadel 920, of showing the actual error reported by the remote server.

When we ripped out all of our outbound protocol handlers last year and just started letting libcurl do all the work, the one thing libcurl couldn't do for us was to capture those error messages. It was frustrating, so we found a workaround using the debug options of libcurl to capture the protocol conversation and extract the error messages. It's an ugly but clever hack. :)

Can't find config.log, there is not such a file. So I can't look in it :-(.

And there is nothing in /tmp, should there be anything?

Any idea?

i think i see what is going wrong and it seems to me that somewhere in the code of citadel it thinks it is a homebrew version and for some reason shuts itself down or there is an error in the code, not wuite sure which of the two it is but all the evidence (which i have been spitting through, gathering and confirming for a couple of days) seem to point to it. i jsut need to find the source and that is going to take a while unless we put the effort in to it togehter
