Subject: Re: Backup script for citadel

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I like that you're thinking about the problem and coming up with a thoughtful solution, one that takes into consideration the fact that you want to rotate your backups, cull the logs after the backup, etc.

I do have a couple of suggestions:

1. Instead of rotating the backup names, you might consider just including the day of the week in your backup filenames. That way you automatically get seven days of backups, and then they get overwritten without you having to rotate them.

2. If you're using the newest version of Citadel, you might consider only doing backups of /usr/local/citadel/data instead of the whole tree. That will just give you the database. For added safety, have your script back up /usr/local/citadel/data/cdb.* and *then* /usr/local/citadel/data/log.* after that. This is what Berkeley DB recommends.

Thanks for the suggestions- I will get started on them right away. The backup of the whole tree was intentional so that you could just extract it and have a complete installation...

Does citadel have shared calendar functions?

I tried adding a new event in calendar for a standard level 4 user, but the attendees button never works! The attendees tab also never displays citadel users to include; only current user's contacts.

Also, when adding events I notice the event appears "delay" shifted in the day view. Meaning, if I set event from 14:00 to 16:00, the hours are saved correctly but in the day view graphic appears like 13:00 to 15:00.

Using citadel 917 and tried with latest firefox browser.

Using citadel 917 installed from easy-install, multiple issues found!

--I can't find where chat history/logs are saved for each user. I have "Log all pages" disabled, so according to docs only sender and receiver should receive copies of their conversations. Where are they saved? How can each user access their message logs!?

--WTH is the "chat" room for? Even with multiple users currently online if user enters this chat room only sees him/herself! Messages are aimed to nothing! I expected this to be a *real* chat room where users could join and chat.

--Configuring pidgin did not work. I followed the doc "Configuring a jabber client for citadel".

Protocol: xmpp

Username: user's username

Domain: my ip address xx.xx.xx.xx

Resource: left in blank (doesn't make any difference)

Password: user's password; checked "remember password"

In Advanced tab checked "allow plaintext auth..." and left default port 5222, just like configured in citadel server.

But in latest pidgin now it forces to choose one of 3 ssl options. "Ask for certificate" and "use certificate when possible" don't work, pidgin pops error "invalid certificate". Third option, "use old ssl", does not pop the error and lets account to be enabled, but it does nothing! Message options such as send new instant message are usable, but status always gets stuck in "connecting", no users appear at all, neither online nor offline, and sent messages aimed to a user never arrive.

After thinking about it I don't think switching to using the day of the week is a good idea. That would only allow one backup per day, and if you manually ran a backup it is possible you would be overwriting your good backup instead of needing to run five of them to overwrite the good backup.

Is there a place I can post about this tool so people can find it?

The chat last time I played with it, allowed mutiple users to go into it in the same room, and have near real time communications, like IRC with each other.   However it does require more than one user to be there, like IRC.  If there is only one user there then it is just like you describe, just like IRC.
