Subject: file sending through chat

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Is file sending through the chat supported in current citadel, with both webcit and a client such as pidgin?

Btw, support board has been totally idle lately?

Nope. Chat only supports text. There are upload/download facilities in Citadel but they are at the individual room layer, not integrated with chat.

I want to login to citadel via sendcommand....

sendcommand operates as a privileged system user. The commands you send through it are not authenticated as any specific user.

What could have gone wrong?

Looks like you haven't installed the development library for zlib.

On a RedHat or CentOS system, do "yum install zlib-devel" and then try Easy Install again.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've been wanting to experiment with the NNTP interface that's
available in the more recent versions of Citadel, and now I can
because I have such a version installed. (Also had no problem

The NNTP interface is read-only for the time being. At some point we may expand it and replace Citadel networking with standard NNTP so that we can network with non-Citadel sites ... that would be awesome :)

For now ... you can connect to Citadel on the standard NNTP port and fetch a listing of "newsgroups" which are basically just the rooms on your Citadel system mapped to an NNTP-compliant name format.

Thanks.

What are those upload/download facilities, or how can one access/use them? I think they are not mentioned in citadel docs... Doesn't matter if they are not integrated to chat.

How do uploaded files work? Can they be directly opened without downloading?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I installed citadel on my Raspberry Pi. I can reach the webcit interface but when I enter my user and password I cannot login. It doesn't give me any errors. It's like the Login button doesn't work.

(I'm a beginner)

Back on Jan 4, I upgraded to 917 using EasyInstall.

Since then, my system has not processed a single incoming network packet. The networking sessions are functioning, but there are currently just shy of 15000 files in my network/spoolin directory.

I'm a little concerned.

Follow up...my citadel log has a ton of these messages:

Jan 18 15:58:01 burgers citserver[26794]: /usr/local/citadel/network/spoolin//#022: No such file or directory

And not long after I attempted to run EasyInstall again (of course, nothing installed), I started seeing this, too:

Jan 18 15:59:22 burgers citserver[26794]: msgbase: message 0 appears to be corrupted

Good news is that outgoing messages are processing and going out (new message arrived in IGnet Unlimited).

No...due to lack of traffic other than myself and that when I move, I will no longer have static IP at my disposal, I'm planning to shutter my BBS.

You don't need a static IP on your home Internet connection.

I use a $4.49/month VPS account and route the traffic through a tunnel
to my trusty old home server.

True...but, as I noted, I get no traffic, other than networking from Uncensored! and some RSS feeds.

I've been running this way for a long while, now. If I thought there was any expectation of getting traffic to my BBS, I'd look at it differently, but at this point, I'm not, so I'm shutting her down.

Ok, nevermind the above

In order to use the wiki function, should it be a default "room" already existing, or must one create it?

Disappointing to hear, but I do hope you'll remain engaged in our community via Uncensored.

I haven't wanted to say this, but you're the only reason I was keeping the networking functions in the software anyway. I could potentially strip thousands of lines of code from Citadel by removing it. I don't think anyone else is using it. Networking will eventually rise from the ashes in the form of bidirectional NNTP, at which point we'll be able to network with lots of different software, not just other Citadel sites.

Obviously if there's anyone out there who was still using Citadel-to-Citadel room sharing, let me know.

Subject: Citadel & Modems

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi Folks - I have Citadel running in the lab, and have a question:  Anyone still have a modem pool in use?

I was considering connecting my two antique computers (TRS-80 M3 and a C64) to the citadel install via modem.  Modems would connect via an Avaya TDM PBX (no SIP involved) so it should work.

I'm stumbling through the docs trying to figure out the citadel modem part

That's a really cool sounding project. 99% of the work will not be done within Citadel, even if Citadel is the primary application to which you want your retro computers to connect.

The trick is to make your Linux system answer connections on the modem lines.
To do this you have to set up a "getty" program to answer incoming calls on the modem. The most popular getty for Linux and standard modems is called "mgetty". You can do a web search for that program and there are plenty of tutorials out there.

Once a modem user connects to your Linux system, they will get a "login:" prompt, just like on the system console. You can either put a banner telling users to log in as a specific user (such as "bbs") to start Citadel, or you can configure mgetty to go directly into Citadel, in the same way modern systems send telnet connections directly into Citadel.

Have fun with your project!
