I"m testing citadel for a home deployment of a private email server. Since I'm new, I'm rather confused on a few things. Can someone point me to some documentation that can answer these questions?

What's the purpose of mail folders?

How can mail folders be created on the web front end?

How can mail filters be created and not disappear?

How can I introduce a cert to my server so it's a trusted connection? I followed directions and it doesn't work or I'm unable to follow directions.

How can I move emails to a folder and have them actually move there?

Is this really meant for a production environment or is this really only geared to be a next-gen BBS?

Ultimately, I don't care how the interface looks if it has great functionality. At this point, it's barely workable. But fro the activity in this BBS, there are active users so maybe I'm just needing to learn.

Thanks.

Welcome! First off, it would help to know how you installed Citadel, and which version you are running. If you did not do the easy install, it is quite possible you are not running the latest version.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi there... ;)

After a bit struggling I managed to install Citadel... great piece of Software... ;)

And everything is working fine... Just sending Mails is not working... ;)

My System is the Latest Debian 9 (stretch)

Installed Citadel with easy install

Errormessage is:

550 (Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or relaying denied)

the receiver Mail is valid and I used several others...

What I did:

I removed SENDMAIL to free the necessary ports

I Activated Citmail as Sendmail clone (http://www.citadel.org/doku.php/faq:installation:does_citadel_have)

But nothing... ;(

Can somebody helb me? Having seepless nights over this... ;)

Thamks,

Maria

Hello,

I am considering installing Citadel, but before doing a manual install, I ran into this situation...

[root@demo ~]# curl http://easyinstall.citadel.org/install
curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'easyinstall.citadel.org'

[root@demo ~]# ping easyinstall.citadel.org
PING citadel.org (216.150.130.115) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- citadel.org ping statistics ---
15 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 34190ms

This begs the question: is this project still active?

project is active, but developer is currently semi-down with an injury, so some things might not get immediate attention. Check again later.

 I would prefer that the citadel use the libraries already on the
system instead of compiling everything again on a slow system. it
dont check if the system library is already available.

Well, you have a couple of choices. The debian packages take advantage of the libraries already on your system, but as has been pointed out, you will usually be running older versions of the software, and because of that we can't help you out with patches and fixes.

Easy Install always has the latest and greatest versions of everything, and when we identify a need to patch or fix something we can respond instantly, but as you point out it does carry with it its own copies of certain libraries.
A lot of commercial software does this, actually; we're just honest about it because we're not commercial software :)

If you're looking for a compromise, you could download the latest source code tarballs and compile them yourself. This would use your existing system libraries and you would be able to grab updates whenever you want to.

550 (Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or relaying

the receiver Mail is valid and I used several others...

This message is generated when the receiving system rejected your email.
Citadel is contacting the remote server, but the remote server is rejecting what you're sending to it. This could be caused by a couple of different things:
1. Is your domain name set properly? If the remote system thinks it's receiving mail from a rogue domain it might get rejected.
2. Are you on a commercial ISP or a consumer ISP? While commercial ISP's generally give you a clear shot out to the Internet, consumer grade services often mess with connections to port 25; they'll either filter, redirect, or reject them outright.

As a test, you can try setting a known working third party email account as a smart host.

Install zlib and zlib-devel (or zlib-dev). That should fix the build.

Hmm. I just checked easyinstall.citadel.org and it is definitely up and running right now. Can you reach that site from a web browser on a desktop system?

Hi IGnatius,

Indeed... It wasn`t Citadels fault... ;)))

All generic Servernames of my ISP (Strato) are rejected by other Mailservers... ;O

The solution is to set your own TLD and everything works fine.. ;)

ThX for your Help and best Wishes for your Health and a quick recovery... ;)

Bye,

Maria :)

Subject: Mail Aliases not beeing saved

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

(newest Version over Easy Install)

Hi, another small Problem:

When I enter an E-Mail Alias into the Vcard of the user and hit save... it`s not been saved!

Not sure why... everything else, for example Fax, Telephone, Name is saved...

I found the file "mail.aliases" and made the changes there... but not shure about the syntax there, how to make one Mail Alias for 4 Users (so 3 Users share the same alias)

Checked also the permissions of the file "mail.aliases", seems to be OK (staff > 644)

ThX for any Help :)

Maria

Subject: Citadel + LDAP Issue

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Re-posting since the earlier post in markdown did not render correctly.

I am trying to setup a mail server using Citadel (v9.01) + LDAP + Squirrelmail. Everything seems to work, except for receiving mails. The FQDN is configured to be say example.com and I send an email to vijaykumar@example.com, from my login (vijaykumar) using squirrelmail. The email recipient address gets converted to "vijaykumar @ example.com", after a lookup in the Global Address Book, by Citadel, and eventually returns with the error message "Invalid recepient: vijaykumar @ example.com". So while I am able to send mails to other servers, I am not able receive mails or send mails within the server.

I suspect, there is a bug in the following code, in function alias() in internet_addressing.c:

    /* Change "user @ xxx" to "user" if xxx is an alias for this host */
    for (a=0; name[a] != '\0'; ++a) {
        if (name[a] == '@') {
            if (CtdlHostAlias(&name[a+1]) == hostalias_localhost) {
                name[a] = 0;
                MSG_syslog(LOG_INFO, "Changed to <%s>\n", name);
                break;
            }
        }
    }

This is supposed to convert "user @ xxx" to "user", as the comment suggests. The code locates '@' and passes the string after @ to CtdlHostAlias() using CtdlHostAlias(&name[a+1]). But if there is a space after the '@', then this should be CtdlHostAlias(&name[a+2]). Please do let me know if this is really a bug, in the code.

OK, got this fixed. The problem was with the Citadel node name. We had specified the node name as "example.com". This had caused citadel addresses to be treated as internet addresses. Changing the node name to "example" fixed the issue.

Vijay
