Subject: Citadel and the OIN community

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi Citadel Support!

First of all, congrats on a great Open Source solution. Secondly, I was wondering if I could open a dialogue with the core development team about the possibility of the Citadel Project supporting the OIN community of patent non-aggression around the Linux System. As you may be aware, we are working to establish a norm whereby people don't use patents to interfere with Open Source collaboration.

That would be me (lead developer), please send me a PM in the "Mail" room and we can discuss whatever needs coverage.

And I'd like to take this opportunity to compliment you in public on your use of the phrase "the Linux System" and not the communist "GNU/Linux."

Subject: Can't negotiate TLS?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm new to the Citadel world, I used plain 'ole postfix/dovecot/squirrelmail and also Zimbra until they removed my posix account integration (grr...).

It's been a pretty good experience so far. I got my LDAP server logins working and can receive mail fine. However, I can't get TLS negotiations to work. It is a signed cert by StartCom (startssl), and it works fine on my website, but not on my mail TLS sessions. I keep getting this error: SSL_accept failed: retval=-1, errval=1, err=error:00000001:lib(0):func(0):reason(1)

I assumed it was my DES3 encrypted key, so I took the encryption off, still no go. I thought maybe it needed the certificate chain so I chained all the certs into my citadel.cer. Still nothing. I do not get an error when restarting the server as if it can't load my cert and am not familiar enough with the inner workings of citadel to know where to start looking. Any suggestions?

Well, your private key and your certificate both have to be in X.509 PEM format, so if you're using DER or PKCS or anything like that, your first task is to convert to PEM.

The key should be placed in keys/citadel.key and if it's in the correct format, the first line will be "-----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY-----" and the last line will be "-----END PRIVATE KEY-----"

The certificate should be placed in keys/citadel.cer, also in PEM format.
If your certificate is chained (and most of them are these days), the chain should be concatenated in the order of signatures, i.e. with your server certificate first, followed by the intermediate(s), with the root last.

Restart Citadel server after setting this up. WebCit follows the same format, just in its own directory (and you can symlink to the same keys).

They already were in pem format, so that's a non-starter. Are they in the wrong location? There was an /etc/ssl/citadel directory upon install, but no keys directory underneath that. I created it and put the keys there, and also tried having them in the /etc/ssl/citadel location as well, which is where the self-signed cit keys were to start.

mail:/etc/ssl/citadel/keys# ls -la
total 14
drwxr-x--- 2 root citadel 1024 Jan 31 11:27 .
drwxr-x--- 3 root citadel 1024 Jan 31 11:36 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root citadel 7220 Jan 31 16:57 citadel.cer
-rw-r----- 1 root citadel 1041 Jan 30 18:21 citadel.csr
-rw-r----- 1 root citadel 1679 Jan 30 18:26 citadel.key
root@mail:/etc/ssl/citadel/keys# pwd
/etc/ssl/citadel/keys

I think that you need to change the file modes from:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root citadel 7220 Jan 31 16:57 citadel.cer

-rw-r----- 1 root citadel 1041 Jan 30 18:21 citadel.csr
-rw-r----- 1 root citadel 1679 Jan 30 18:26 citadel.key

To

-rw------- 1 root citadel 7220 Jan 31 16:57 citadel.cer
-rw------- 1 root citadel 1041 Jan 30 18:21 citadel.csr
-rw------- 1 root citadel 1679 Jan 30 18:26 citadel.key

I tried making everything accessible only to root, changed ownership back to root:root, no improvement. I tried with both the chained and non-chained cert. I have standard ports 25 and 465 open. I tried disabling port 25 to force TLS transactions, no go. I tried disabling normal SMTP on port 25 and enabling secure SMTP on port 25, no go.

Subject: logging errors like "No external notifiers configured on system/user"

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello,

I just installed citadel 8.22 on Debian 7.3 from the debs here and I am wondering what I have mis-configured in my install..

I'm getting a little bit of mail but it doesn't seem to be getting most of it..

I'm unable to telnet in on port 25 from a remote host. Locally it seems to work normally. Its listening on 0.0.0.0.

These errors are repeated over and over - every minute

Feb  4 11:50:18 trillium citserver[3460]: No external notifiers configured on system/user

There is a self-signed certificate on the server.

Thank you!

Looking forward to getting this working!

they are no errors, just notifications. They will be silenced by default in the next major release.

What is the utility to dump all the email out of citadel in XML format? I want to see if perhaps another MTA is easier for me to understand. I like a LOT of citadel's features but it seems to me that some things on my install aren't working (I usually get a lot more mail)

I wish I did but I just don't have the time to figure it out right now.

  1. How to take backup the server configuration without shutting down the service or server
  2. How to take backup of the users mail boxes.
  3. For a 100 users what could be the hardware specs and finally
  4. Do i require to install Funambol to get mails delivered to mobile phones

Thanks in advance

have a look at:

http://citadel.org/doku.php/?do=search&id=backup

The hardware requirements pretty much boil down to disk space nowadays, and maybe if you want virtualization inbetween, that also increases the bill.

I am completely new to Citadel. I just installed on a new OpenSuse 13.1 box, but the webcit login comes up, but does not run after either entering login infor or trying to create a new login. Anyone familiar with this install ?
