Hi All, I considering installing Citadel on my Unbuntu Linux computer to run a an 'ol school BBS.

Something I've thought about as well; although I'm already running it for other reasons

I would like to know if Citadel has FTN (Fidonet) and QWK network capabilities to receive messages and Files? Much like a Synchonet system has.

There are possibilities for both, possibly still more so depending on how it goes with using NNTP for at least transport.  (I know of FTN programs usable for gating FTN <-> Newsgroups/Email, one of which is still in Debian/Ubuntu although it needs work.)

no, it doesn't have adaptors for these.

What's the possibility of being able to configure additional possibly external adapters?  (There's more than one way to 'integrate' additional functionality...)

you could however probably easily plug them into the spooling mechanism...

That's one of the things I intend to investigate when  I have a chance...

Subject: Inbound mail not being displayed

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello everyone,

I recently had to change my domain name (thanks to dyndns). I updated my host and citadel configuration accordingly, changing the domain in all mail setting dialogs. Inbound mail is being accepted via smtp (confirmed using a tcpdump trace), but when I check the private mail room of the user account no new emails are being displayed. Note that this worked perfectly before the domain name switching.

The server affected is 8.22-1 running on wheezy.

Can anyone give me a hint on how to debug or even better resolve this issue?

Best Regards,

Chris

you have to edit your users personal vcard.

To update all users default email address issue

sendcommand IGAB

on the commandline.

QDIR can help you debugging this issue.

.ep
which ends up looking like...
. enter password

at which point you will be prompted to enter your new password and once more to confirm it, at which point the change is immediate.

31 chars is my longest accepted password, I think more did not work. Which is a shame, since my non-random passwordsphrases easily become longer than 40 chars.

   - symbols allowed/not allowed

I have found restrictions for the login, not for the password

i have completed today an install of of citadel and i am not able to login.

Try the first 31 chars of your password.

Hm, ask an admin/aide, maybe IG can help you. Or wait till you are at your laptop again. ;)

Hi, I've just set up a Citadel Mail Server on a Debian7 and was astonished how quick and nofrills it was.

Now I'd like to add a grey listing software. Are there any how-to or suggestion on which one to use?

I use postgrey on Centos. But in order to do so you need to install postfix as your MTA, configure it to use the lmtp socket in order to talk to citadel. Postfix - putting the frills back into your setup!

Subject: fetching POP3 fails

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm trying to use Citadel as a local IMAP server, to sync several (also local) clients. External mails should be fetched from a POP3 mail account. According to what I read about Citadel, this should not be a problem. (Yes, I'm new to Citadel)

I set up a new server (basic ubuntu 12.04 server) and installed Citadel with the easy install script. (Citadel 8.24, WebCit 8.24, Server-Build 8.24)

First attempts to add a POP3 account ended in an error message "Unable to allocate the space required for /usr/local/citadel/netconfigs", which went away after "chown -R citadel:citadel /usr/local/citadel/" hinted somewhere here (seems to be a easy-install bug, not to provide the installation directory with the proper rights, right?).

Then, normal users got the message "Higher access is required to access this function." while entering "Edit or delete this room" - but adding the POP3 credentials seemed to work. Btw, it took me quite some time to figure out, that Citadel can't handle SSL/TLS while fetching POP3 mails. I really hope, this functionality will be added in the future - but until then, at least tell people, that it does not work yet. In germany, there are almost no POP3-accounts left that even allow access without encryption.

Well - I still have one POP3 account that allows "port 110 plaintext" access (I checked). But it does not fetch any mails.

When I check the logs, there are no real error messages: just "fetched 0 new of 6 messages in ...", even when the last poll logged with "fetched 0 new of 5 messages in ...".

Is it really possible, that something as basic as POP3 retrieval is not working properly - in 30 year old software? Or did I miss some part of configuration? Regarding POP3, according to the documentation, I only need to add the credentials in the room config, right?

Something else: I can't find any documentation, if Citadel supports the "IMAP keywords" feature. Does anyone know, if it does?

Subject: Incomplete display of mail listings in browser; missing navigation

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Dear All,

I have some weird issue using Citadel (lastest stable version) on FreeBSD 9 with latest updates. All mail listings are incomplete, stopping the listing some time in April, instead of reach today's date. Likewise, there are no navigation keys to walk from one page ot the next within the mail listings. These issues only affect mail, but render the use of Citadel's webcit as a webmail client pretty useless.

Mail is completely retrieved, when I use an external mail client, so the IMAP server works.

Am I missing something?

Thank you so much -

Chris

Subject: SSL/TLS support for LDAP authentication

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Dear All,

I have successfully installed Citadel using user authentication via LDAP talking directly to an OpenLDAP server, without using host authentication. However, I fail to set up ldaps, nor ldap via STARTTLS. There is no way to enter any such settings in the setup and configuration procedure for citserver, as it seems, or my attempts fail miserably. Non-encrypted LDAP authentication works nicely.

These issues should be governed by the OpenLDAP client installed on the same machine as Citadel - and it does a great job for other applications, happily using SSL as well as TLS. Is there anything I did miss?

Thanks a lot!

Chris

hm, it has a limit of 10k entries; however, so far problems with *bsd in the past have been missing select handling; can you sniff whether all reaches webcit?

I can confirm that messages arrive happily, and get copied safely into sub-folders created under INBOX (or Mail). So, WebCit is certainly doing its job. I am moving my mails inside my INBOX into sub-folders to avoid the 10,000 entries limit. However, is there any way to increase the latter, for maximum scalability? Thanks a lot, Chris

Subject: Citadel Rebooted and webcit service disappeared

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi Ppl

We have had a server that has been running for some time now and when it rebooted the webcit service disappeared. We have another server (cloned) that is still running without issues.

We ran chkconfig on this server and it shows that the webcit server is no longer there.

Server - Centos 6.5

How can we re-add this back to the services? Or do I have to install webcit again?

Ok, i found what i think is the cause - if i submit a message using citmail that has the from address of a user in the database that user gets a copy of it probably to go in their "sent" folder. I have my citadel user account set to send a copy of any emails i get sent to my external address.

is there a way to stop these external mails being sent to my citadel account?

Afaik, it just isn't implemented yet. If you want a workaround: Implement ldaps on OS level using PAM & nslcd (or whatever is state of the art atm). Then use the PAM auth mode of citadel.

Since Citadel atm does not pull any additional info out of LDAP, you are not losing anything here. I have this setup going with nlscd, the other (aledgedly better and more modern) stuff didn't work out.
