after running Citadel in production together with Postfix and
Rspamd for quite some time, I recently migrated the internal
mail delivery path from SMTP (localhost:2025) to native LMTP
using Citadel's Unix domain sockets.

Hehe. You didn't have to, it was just a suggestion. But I'm happy to hear it. :)T

LMTP does give you some advantages though, because it suppresses certain behaviors that are handled by your external-facing MTA when running with that mode -- some types of forgery checking, RBL lookups, relaying behavior, etc.

It sure beats the bad old days when Citadel and your system mailer piped mail back and forth through the shell!

Thanks for reporting the troubleshooting, everyone. libcitadel is a static library now so apparently we need to modify the install script to do a better job of clearing that directory out. I'll work on that during the long weekend.

The purge is not working for me. In "Aide" appears one message saying that say "105 messages were delete" but really they are not.

I monitored the server and appear many temporary files in data directory until no disk space (of 16GBytes). Stay some time like that and return to 16Gbytes free space. But the emails that must been deleted remained. Two days like that.

I think you are providing a semi-featured Citadel. The purge is not working. It supposed to purge the messages from 1st of February and it is not doing.

You can define a purge rule for every folder. Also a rule to move it to archive.

I want to shrink by purging the older emails previous deleted manually. I has the Auto-Purge setting.

I suppose that I can not do it configuring "Default message expire policy for private mailboxes". Or can I? I suppose that is to delete and purge active messages.

Seldom times appear notifications of purged messages at Aide and if so only one purged message or EEDI (??)

Are there some way to shrink the size of the main citadel data file without compromizing the citadel stability?

Do you have the auto-purger configured to delete "old" messages?

You can do this at the site-wide level, or on an individual room (such as your trash folder).

If new data is arriving at approximately the same rate old data is expiring, then yes, eventually you will reach an equilibrium where the database files stabilize in size.

Do look in the Aide room for messages confirming this.  The helpful Citadel Aide will tell you how many objects are being deleted during the nightly purger run.

I upgraded my VPS plan. Now it is working Ok. I think that it was mainly the passing of 2 cores to 4 cores that fixed the problem. 3GBytes RAM->4 GBytes. +25GBytes of Disk.

Easy Install should be deploying Berkeley DB to your system first.

What kind of system are you installing it on? Linux distribution, CPU, etc. ?

Citadel is installed on debian bullseye (v-server)

I'm sorry, but you can't run Easy Install on a Linux that old. I was able to fix the Berkeley DB build issue, but then ran into OpenSSL problems. bullseye still uses OpenSSL 1.1.1 and we need OpenSSL 3.0.

But that doesn't mean you're out of luck!

I tested the Docker distribution of Citadel on a bullseye system and it runs great!

So all you need to do is

apt install docker.io
docker run -it --rm citadeldotorg/citadel -c

That'll run a test for you; the test should end with:
"/usr/local/bin/ctdlvisor: binary compatibility CONFIRMED! You CAN run Citadel in a container on this system."

Once that test succeeds, go to https://www.citadel.org/docker.html to get the instructions on how to run a permanent installation.

Thank you for trying Citadel!

I'm using docker via calima on MacBook Pro M1. Works fine on the initial run but not working after stopping and starting.

Did the following.

mkdir /usr/local/citadel

docker run -d --restart=unless-stopped --network host --volume=/usr/local/citadel:/citadel-data --name=citadel citadeldotorg/citadel

# Stopped citadel

docker stop citadel

# Start citadel

docker start citadel

# Result when trying to connect from browser

Am I stopping and starting Citadel wrong?

Does Citadel have a search function?

Subject: General Question (XMPP/Jabber)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello! I'm looking at Citadel as software to host on my domain for a small group of my friends and I to use. Having included chat functionality is one of the features I'm looking at, so I created this account to test XMPP chatting. However, when logging into a client like converse.js, I cannot send messages outward to my XMPP account on a different server.

My question is this;

If I set up my own Citadel instance, will the XMPP messages sent federate with other XMPP servers?

Thank you,

XMPP Clients will work with Citadel, but not in SSL and I don't recommend to use it. XMPP Service is not federated, its stand alone. Its better to install a free XMPP Server or Service without Citadel.

OpenFire is pretty easy to setup, and is federated.  I know citadel will become federated someday, but unsure about xmpp federation, may just be mastodon style instead.
