not to derail the topic, but I now have the text telnet port server working at citadel.smashbot.com . I have learned that some citadel users find the text client preferable to use because of how the content is presented. With that in mind, I would love to help debug and improve the server side of the text client experience.

You then need to .E(nter) C(onfiguration)

And change "Prompt after each message" from NO to Yes.

Then you'll get more options...

Oh wait... here it is... in .Enter Configuration one of the options
is <N>ext and <S>top work at paginator prompt.

You want that set to YES so that you can <N>ext a message when it
pauses.

Thanks! I can now use "N" to skip to the next message.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Goodmorning,

First thank you for responding, and sorry for not replying sooner, i wasn't checking the forum every the day for a while.

I recognize Citadel is a huge and brilliant amount of work from volunteers, and as i said i like it very much, but if i cannot get the basics to work, i cannot use it.

to my issue :

As you can see from the extract of the log file in my initial post , connection to citserver on SMTP is established from the mailclient.

I showed both the POP3 session and the SMTP session, and while the POP3 session functions properly, the logfile shows that the SMTP session is initiated, but fails on authentication

This is the same on all three available ports  25, 465 and 587.

As the Citadel user has only one password, and i can set outlook and an android phone to use the same password for POP3 and SMTP, i must conclude that Citserver authentication is the problem.

(And the comment of another user with the same problem after updating to release 931 strenghtens my conclusion)

Sending/receiving mail internetwide from the webclient is working fine, i just cannot use a mailclient to send it.  (And using IMAP is not an option)

Best regards, Bart

Have you tried using Telnet to connect to your SMTP server and seeing what happens there when you compose the e-mail?

https://www.itgeared.com/articles/1102-smtp-commands-how-to-send-email-using/

If you haven't - that might give you better insight into what is happening.

Citadel is in a very active development phase - with a LOT of team testing going on - and a major rewrite of the underlying code and distribution model taking place.

The end result should be a more supportable core application, that is easier to install, maintain and repair, that runs leaner with tighter code.

A lot of the problems in Citadel right now are legacy issues - and figuring out what is causing them, our guess is often as good as the developers. I've upset the developers with flooding this forum with "questions," which really amounted to me working through the issues myself and figuring out my own answers.

I think part of it is that the development team could spend time building labs and trying to recreate and fix problems on older versions of Citadel that won't be relevant to the next major production rc of Citadel - because the code is changing so much...

Or they can put that time into getting that rc to us and providing us a more stable Citadel that is more supportable for them.

Keeping in mind, that Citadel is a FOSS volunteer supported project and team that doesn't even suggest a patreon or other compensation. I've never seen any of the developers "pass the plate".

Most of the issues I experience with Citadel are a combination of it being poorly documented/documentation being out of date - and operator error in configuring or setup. I end up spending a lot of time reverse engineering what Citadel is doing and learning a TON about Linux and suddenly a light is revealed on what I've done wrong that caused my issue. Mail is a complex and difficult to manage service/platform in general - one of the harder servers in any data-center to administer. There are a lot of different moving parts, it still relies on some fairly low-level protocols and is very picky about having everything running optimal at your network layer and security layer, it is *super* important to people and it is a favorite vector of attack - and it generally relies on some sort of back-end database - so it is one of the most "multi-discipline" servers in the DC that a person can manage. And - because it is kind of a utility server - not seen as a critical line of business application server but instead a kind of support role - it generally doesn't get the attention it deserves. Lots of IT staff in lots of IT departments manage e-mail servers without understanding how to test SMTP from a telnet session by hand-crafting an email there the old fashioned way, or the importance of correct reverse lookup records, or a billion other complexities of making an email server work right.

Personally - I just run Citadel as a BBS - and I've got the internet mail disabled. Running your own mail server is a royal pain-in-the-ass that is difficult to manage and secure and requires you to be at the top of your IT game - and if you read through this room - you'll see the vast majority of the questions have to do with people attempting to host their own e-mail servers.

But I suspect the next version of Citadel will be a major step forward in making this all easier and also more supportable - so I recommend you stick with Citadel. I've administered Exchange for corporations, I've managed SMTP servers, I've provided support for clients running mail servers linked into VoIP voice-mail systems. Citadel is one of the *best* mail-server solutions out there. Easy to comprehend, configure, administer and backup. But it is still e-mail... one of the earliest internet protocols/apps invented and one of the LEAST changed from the start.

I have exactly the same problem since I updated to build 931 via easyinstall.

Everything works fine except the mail client connection to the SMTP.

I would also be very grateful for targeted tips on troubleshooting.

Fri Apr 09 2021 06:07:11 EDT from bartv Subject: SMTP authentication problem from outlook

Hello all,

Could not find search function in this forum, so apologies if this is a recurring question.

Installed Citadel on my PI4, and most of it is working, except i have problems connecting outlook.

I have setup citadel as my mailserver, and i can send and receive email to external accounts (work, gmail, etc). (Test via Webcit)

I'm using outlook 2016 and connect via POP3/SMTP.

Outlook collects mail via POP3 fine from the server, using account settings either on port 110 and 995 no problem.

But is keeps asking for my credentials when using SMTP - controlpanel/mailsettings - test account setting - tries to send a test mail.

Tried SMTP via port 25 no encryption, but also using port 465 - with SSL enabled - keeps popping credentials question and port 587 STARTTLS - credentials quesions

'Your email server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password"

email server rejects login using username/password. But they work fine for POP3 logon......

Using the same credentials, sending from my Galaxy S10 via wifi on internal network using builtin mailclient using port 465 and SSL is no problem.

So Citadel & Pi should be configured correctly...

I'm lost. Any suggestions ?

Tnx

Bart

i've been testing  but no luck yet.

syslog has this error : bad password specified for <> Service <SMTP-MTA>

Should the username not be within those emty brackets ? that would mean the username is not forwarded by outlook to citedal ????

Interestingly enough - today while searching for SSL errors I get from Citadel - I found the following link:

https://www.linode.com/community/questions/10102/cant-receive-email-with-citadel

Where other people are complaining about the same issue - but also... where people are having trouble with sending/receiving mail.

And the suggestion made by the people trying to help involved connecting to Port 25 via Telnet to see what was happening.

I don't think my error, which is in this guy's logs...

"SSL_accept failed: errval=5, retval=-1 (Input/output error)"

Is related to send errors using SMTP - but it is interesting that it isn't just me getting this error in my logs.

Anyhow - maybe the link above will assist you.

Linodes have 25/tcp blocked by default. If you send them a support ticket and have had the linode for a while they will open it for you. The other thing that worked was enabling deprecated tls 1.0. I had this issue with phpbb also, when I included support for all tls versions including old not recommended ones, it fixed it.

Internet Mail is a pain in the ass to configure and requires a very high level of interdisciplinary knowledge about IT to configure successfully - and once you get it up, it is a magnet for attacks and requires constant diligence in management, administration and security - as well as lots of experience navigating the different providers and authorities responsible at all ends for making it work right. Once you get that all right, your running one of the public faced Internet services with the *most* personal liability. Just ask Hillary Clinton how sketchy it can be running your own personal mail server. I wouldn't do it for a SMB, I wouldn't do it for a personal mail server. In each case, a hosted solution is way less headache. I'd only do it for six figures of compensation from a major corporation with a team of IT engineers and lawyers that I was certain wouldn't throw me under the bus if someone from a TLA .gov org came knocking.

Citadel makes it easy to set up the mail SERVER... but there is no program that can solve the rest of those challenges.

This is why I have Citadel Internet mail deactivated.

And you get authentication failed with the correct password - but you can log into the web client, authenticate with the same password and userID, and it works?

That is bizarre.

Do you have the Citadel textclient set up for Telnet and SSH? Can you Telnet and SSH into your Citadel or do you get authentication errors there, too?

Bear with me here - because I've been talking with another Admin who had a problem with authentication failing on the text client - and I'm wondering if this could be related to his issue.

some (long) time ago I expressed my interest in trying out Citadel within a Docker container and someone here pointed me to some repository where some sort of "prototype" was available. Now, I have lost that particular link and am now asking if anyone here can (once more) provide it to me?

We ended up going in a different direction.  Instead of Docker, we built an AppImage, which just had its first beta release a couple of days ago.

AppImage, as you may know, packages an entire complex application and all of its dependencies into a single executable file that runs on many different Linux versions.  It turns out we had to change a lot of things that were based on outdated assumptions to make this happen.  For example, we ended support for the LFHS-style build and now require everything in a single directory.  These changes ought to make it a lot easier to put Citadel and its dependencies into a container, but as previously noted, we are not currently working on that.

Go ahead and try the AppImage if it can satisfy your requirements.

github was too costly? lol... the source is out there, someone just has to volunteer to maintain

some (long) time ago I expressed my interest in trying out Citadel within a Docker container and someone here pointed me to some repository where some sort of "prototype" was available.

Go ahead and try the AppImage if it can satisfy your requirements.

revisited... sourceforge was too complicated? just insult to injury. citadel is a blessing of source code within superb architecture. surely I am not the only one implementing message search and forgot password routines.

Search should be pretty easy because there is already a full text indexer built into the message store.

As for the public repositories ... Citadel pre-dates them all, so we've always managed it ourselves.  Our public "forge" is at https://code.citadel.org/

I encountered this same authentication problem with version 931 built via easy-install.  I think the problem is with citadel/modules/smtp/serv_smtp.c where smtp_get_user(5) is called in smtp_command_loop.  From this context, the offset parameter 5 should be replaced by zero (0).  I modified the easy-install script to work with a patched copy of the tarball and the resulting build seems to work correctly.

Subject: IP Based Relaying thru Citadel

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've had to abandon my HMAIL server (Windows XP PRO issues activating)

I have installed a Debian system with Citadel. I am looking to do some relaying of email from specific IP addresses from old devices that cannot handle auth.

Is it possible thru Citadel and can it be done via the web manager? Or will it have to be done via CLI?

in smtp_command_loop.  From this context, the offset parameter 5

Thanks for the tip! We will check that out and patch the mainline source.
