Don't have all the details, but our state just had constitutional carry go in to effect on the 1st.  Last night a legally non-permitted person stopped a mass shooting in process at a local mall. Only 2 dead, one the shooter.

First out of the gate: Lefties are attacking him for carrying his gun in the mall.   "whaaa he broke the rules"  ( its not a law here.. posted signs just means they can kick you out )

It's the same in my state. If I were that guy, I'd say "well gee, I guess you got me. I promise to never return to your mall, then. There's a pest problem you guys don't have under control there, anyway."

Most places here just ask not to open carry, if they say anything at all. I'm ok with that, they are still trying to be fair to our rights but not scare the "uninformed pansies" that would cause a unnecessary scene, and it is their property. Idiots is why i dont open carry actually. its just not worth the hassle from the idiots. "oh my god ! hes got a gun, everyone down! Call the police"  Then a 10 min trip in the store becomes an hour, and they sit and giggle that they screwed up your lunch hour.

Signs, to be honest i ignore. Same as you, its not illegal, and If they find out and ask me to leave, fine, its their store so ill go, but they lost a customer permanently.

You're in Indiana? That story is all over the alternative news sites. I don't follow the mainstream media so I don't know how they're reporting it.
Obviously the pro-2A people are reporting how a good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun before more people got hurt.

To the people who are afraid of (other people owning) firearms, there are only two types of guns: the "AR-15" (which stands for Assault Rifle 15 and is fully semi-automatic and can fire lots of rounds from its 30-magazine clip) and the "Glock" (which must be held sideways while firing).

I didn't know anyone still went to malls.

Yes.  About 6.2 miles from the mall in question actually.

Its nothing like the heyday of the 80s, but there is still enough foot traffic to keep many of them ( mostly ) open. And clearly enough to make it a potential mass shooting.

This mall is the center piece of an entire town built from stores and shopping.  I go so far back in time, that i remember them back in the mid to late 80s converting it from a 'plaza' of 4 strip stores on the same property that sort of intersected with 4 independent keystone stores, ( sears, Montgomery ward, Lazarus, and JC Penny ) into an actual covered mall. Biggest in central Indiana.

My dad owned a store in one of the strips that surrounded it ( auto body shop, not commodity sales ).  Next door was a TV repair shop.. Cousin owned it and a couple more strips around the area..( and others )

Ironically, some dead malls are demolished and turned back into strips.

People from some parts of the world are astonished to the point of hostility that the US has "car-dependent suburbs". They think all of suburbia should be turned into Amsterdam where there are mid-size buildings everywhere. The fact that we had malls at all is really a testament to our culture of driving to shop. Unfortunately for the people who sneer at it, the advent of online shopping will probably strengthen, rather than reverse, the uniquely American concept of suburbia.

And perhaps with people spread out more, there will be fewer target-rich environments.

How odd. New Biden appointed ATF director made the comment that 'SCOTUS rulings are the law of the land, and that the ATF does not make laws, congress does"

I dont trust him at all, but that is interesting that he actually said that as it would piss off many of the people that just voted him in....

It seems like every so often I see someone from the ATF make a statement that looks like they're throwing us a bone. I never knew what to make of it. Are they actually trying to be a sincere nonpartisan regulatory body, or is it a dirty attempt to appear friendly to take some heat off?

I think some of me is still naive enough to think they can't all be snakes, there probably are people in these government beuracracies that genuinely want to do good, they're just misguided about it. But this guy is a democrat appointee, so he doesn't get the same benefit of doubt, yet he can't seriously think we're dumb enough to fall for the latter, can he?

Anyway, it's probably just an attempt to keep his head down and stay out of sight. Of everyone. Going along with my "they can't all be snakes" comment, I also think a lot of them just want comfy government positions where they can remain noncontroversial and collect that sweet pension.

Yes, we are out there, lots of us really. However we are not in charge and have zero say-so in what is going on.

Most of the ones in charge are there for the power, not to hide, and are scumbags. You dont get to those levels by just wanting to 'do good' or 'hide'.

Decided to get a bunch of guns out and oil them up this morning. Not sure why, it just felt like it's been more than a year and they looked dry. A few of them are real old, like WW1 old, so I'd like to try to be diligent about preserving them

Of course, after making a mess with oil all over my hands and trying to run a bore snake through one, I dropped it from shoulder height onto the concrete. Seems like it's fine, bent the shit out of a stacking swivel but that's just cosmetic. I'm amazed it didn't crack the wood anywhere.

It's a good thing I was never in the military. After this one, I don't think there's a rifle left that I haven't dropped on concrete at some point. This is why I can't have nice things.

I always wear rubber gloves when cleaning anything with solvent.  After decades of working on cars and being careless ( who isnt tho? ), i have become allergic to the stuff. If i get my hands covered, or breathe too much, its like i have flu for a couple of days.   And i have a couple of work benches in the garage i can use. ( if i clean them off , typical garage with stuff everywhere :) )

At least i would if i had any left after that terrible boating accident. . ( hear that ATF... ? )

There's got to be a business model in there somewhere. Pack a bunch of gun enthusiasts onto a boat and then sink it, just so they can all have a plausible story that their guns were on board. The tickets would have to cover the cost of a new boat, so it wouldn't be cheap.

And if any BATF agents show up ... well, it's really a shame, they boarded the boat, and they sadly didn't survive the accident :)

I guess this latest bill " bans anything that is a semi auto version of a full automatic weapon"

Which means just about everything. Even my Glock would be banned.

Pulled from committee.  Didn't have enough votes.

Dodged this bullet ( pun intended ). Of course they will try again, but a bit restrained to hope to not lose too many votes..

They may become increasingly desperate ... for several different reasons.
Potential power transfer in the government, increased radicalization of the anti-gun crowd, more mass shootings (false flag or otherwise), not enough mass shootings during tapings of "The View", etc. etc. etc.
