The Design is definetly too macintoshed, the idea of not having icons but wishing to have avatars for people/mails is something i consider insconsistent, too.

Anyway, you often have "waste of space" issues I do not fully understand. Could you provide some screenshots? Just use paint and mark things with a bright read brush ghoulishly.

Anyway, I like some of his style guidelines and the overall idea of a searchable/browsable list of attachments. But this would probably require some heavy work in citadel server.

There is an easy fix in order to let opera mobile users log in. The downside is that it gets a little less beautiful. Also tinymce does not work in opera mobile at all, it loads but I was not able to enter the message text. This might be fixed with a tinymce update, will try that later.

I'm making a wild guess here, because I don't know the frequencies or channel bandwidths for CB, nor the frequency spreads for packet radio signals, but perhaps the FCC is concerned that packet radio signals might use more bandwidth than a single CB radio channel is allocated. If the signal bandwidth is more than the bandwidth for the channel plus the guard-bands, it would interfere with adjacent channels. If I remember correctly, there's at least one CB channel reserved for emergency use. It would definitely be bad to interfere with that.

That might be the objection.  I never followed any petition to get F2D emissions allowed on 11m.  It is easy to get a ham license these days as there is no code requirement right up to a general license.

The FCC is picky about the "what" is transmitted.  Data tones are different from voice in the opinion of the FCC.  They call them emission types.  Heh, heh..

When the government decides it must shut down the internet for our own good, this might be the best way to communicate.

One year I got my brother-in-law an external speaker for his CB radio.  He thought that was great, he was always shouting at people on the road.

I think the cell phone killed the CB radio.  The Internet reduced the popularity of ham radio.  When I was in Florida I would hear commercials trying to get people interested in HAM radio.  They focused on trying to convince the public they would be heroes during an emergency.

Yes, a whopping 3 channel one as I remember.  Had to buy crystal pairs for each channel (transmit and receive).

So, I've recently found the power of Dropbox.

I used to backup my web server's lampp (apachefriends.com xampp for linux) installation to a ftp mapped curlftpfs directory that went to my other tower in the house and thought twice about that.

A couple days ago, I was experimenting with Dropbox. I found they have a Linux release (.deb or .rpm) that works superbly well on Ubuntu 10.04.03 LTS SE.

I now have my entire /opt/lampp/* folder mapped to dropbox (via symlinks), and every night my server makes a .tgz backup of the whole installation.

I can now edit files on-the-fly between my 4 main workstations (at work, home, and mobile) whenever I need to without ssh, remote desktops, or any other special protocols. It's pretty slick.

I used to not see the point of Dropbox. As long as I kept backups wherever I needed, it didn't really seem necessary to keep a copy on some remote service.

Now that I see the power of this software, I can see its true potential. Of course the way I'm using it has a few security risks, but everything does.

I've extensively used it to rebuild my friend's record label website (http://www.blurredvizionstudios.com) and plan to use it to build all of the other sites I have on that server.

I learned very quickly a couple weeks after coming to uncensored (a couple years ago) to be wary of any link posted by Animal or fleeb... though, I have gotten more brave recently and thought to take a jump into a 'Link by Animal' (tm).

I'd like to propose an unwritten rule that I've strictly enforced pretty much everywhere that I've maintained.

"Label your links" - Appropriate labels such as [SFW] [Sketchy] [NSFW] [F'd^] [AKW] [HAHA] should be used on any and all links posted. Multiple can be used, but used appropriately. Explainations of these labels can be requested. Any new label created needs an explaination in the post it was created.

"Shorten your links" - Use link shortening services such as bit.ly. Our database table specifically for posts with links is up in the 30mb range due to long character lengths. Save me some hdd space and shorten your links and text as much as possible so this forum can be active for a long time.

And the above comes straight from one of the vBulletin forums I'm maintaining.

@Spell: I agree with the wiki page if you're making instructions for the average novice computer luser, but if you need a quick-and-dirty for a targetted audience (above-average user is who i normally direct my how-to's anyways) then flat text works wonders.

It's simple enough (and probably less time consuming) to actually type a 4 line how-to than it is to make a stupid video, edit it, upload it, then share it...

1. Open your browser of choice (Google Chrome/Firefox/Etc.)
2. In the address/URL bar, type "about:debug" (without the quotes)
(That puts your browser in "Debug Mode") 
3. Open the config area "about:config"
4. Change BLAH:BLAH setting to "FOO"

restart the browser, and you're done.

(it took about 40 seconds to type the above... as opposed to the 10 - 30 minutes it will take to record/edit/upload)

I'm not sure when it started, but you can become a professional YouTuber by joining their partnership program and maintaining a lot of views.  It takes a huge viewership, though, to make any money at it (you're paid a very tiny amount of money per view), and I get the sense that you won't get rich this way.  Check YouTube itself (or possibly Google) for details.  I haven't looked into it myself.

I'm more of a road freight girl amyway, goods seem to move by road here, we just don't have those big trains like you do. There is a railroad not far from where I live, and on a still day I hear the trains, mostly passenger, but there is the occasional freighter.

It'd be cool if BBB did get some footage, but don't make a special trip just for me ;)

I always thought of Aahz as our very own "Sheldon" but now I see I was wrong.

anyway, being one of those rare people who liked high school, despitee being fairly geeky, I posted a handful of pics from highschool, including one which showed a teacher who has since passed away. She was also the mother of someone in my circle of friends. The response has been great. People have been posting their memories of her and just saying that they miss her, and her daughter just posted "I keep forgetting you guys had her...your comments make me smile... thanks."

It's not much, but giving a daughter a couple extra memories of her mom - seems like Facebook's good for something.

Good that/if it works for you Spell Binder. In my case, almost all the important things people ever said via their Facebook status were things they also posted somewhere on a blog (you know, exhibitions they were part of, etc.). So if I just subscribe to all those RSS feeds, I shouldn't feel left out. I don't know -- I like RSS. Am I old-fashioned? :P

No need to specifically hang around in bars, that was just an example for the optimal use of your spare time. You can do other wholesome and healthy things, such as take drugs or beat your spouse.

But on a more serious note, not having that Facebook obligation is liberating. Also, Facebook, Inc. doesn't have your behavior data in their data warehouse if you don't have an account. The only weird situation it creates is the look in people's eyes when you tell them you're not on Facebook, but if someone is so shallow that the only communications tool they use is Facebook, perhaps you can live without their contact information.

Even if it weren't, what about the problem that many people seem to use only Facebook and nothing else to communicate with people these days, and that Facebook, Inc. is not bound by the same privacy laws that ISPs and telcos need to follow? Creepy. Well, and all the moneymaking schemes Facebook and Zynga have going on with their games.

I recently deleted my Facebook account and discovered, big surprise, that I have a little more spare time now. Time I can spend in bars. With real people. Isn't that great? If you want to spend more time in bars as well, here's Facebook's account deletion request form. You'll thank me one day!

What would you suggest I do about the websites I'm currently still working on?

They won't be finished for quite some time because they're very dependant upon my customer (the person whom requested the website). They're dragging their feet on what content they want on which page and which systems should be used, etc.
