Actually, all but about 10 were not in Bangkok, but in Myanmar, AKA Burma. The Burmese military is preventing foreign assistance in many areas so the death toll will be much higher there than anywhere in Thailand.

Over 1000 people so far declared dead due to the earthquake over in Bangkok. But that is what happens when you pack people into cities and mother nature gets angry..

They either do heists on transport before the items are marked with tax stamps, have people inside who provide the product before it has been tax stamped, or buy in low tax areas and transport to high tax areas. 

The profits are not large enough, the fines are too heavy, the supply too small and difficult to acquire and the risk it too big to make it a *significant* portion of their economy - especially today - and especially competing against counterfeits from Asia.

They then proceeded to sell them to distribution channels as if they were regular taxed cigaretes and put the difference in their pockets.

They also moved them from low tax regions in a certain country to high tax regions of the same country to maximize profits.

As you can imagine, it was not bound to last, but much money to be made while it lasted :P

When I was a young guy, the least of the black market items my associates dealt in were "illegal fireworks" that could be bought legally just across state lines, but have always been prohibited in my lifetime in California without a "religious permit".

The question is wether the tax&bourocrazy overcost offsets the risk of getting scammed by bad produc in a dark alley and having no legal recourse. If the tax overcost is low enough then the dark alley is finished. If the overcost from law compliance is mad you will have what my country has and more than 50% of your economy will be underground because nobody can afford legal activities.

But taking alcohol as the example of what happens. At one point it was illegal and everyone made their own or used black market.  But in 2021, how many people do you know now that still make their own ( be it distilled or just brew ). Hardly anyone.   And you can do it in the comfort of your own house and not get caught ( distillation, is still technically illegal for individuals, or making too much beer/wine ). And along the same lines as above, would you even want to buy some bathtub gin and risk getting sick when you can drive down to the corner market and get exactly what you want, with zero concerns from a *regulated* manufacturer?   

And sure, not that it does not exist at all, but about the only black market left for it is stolen goods.  And sure tax avoidance is there for a few hard-core, but is soooo low on the priority list as to be such a small % that its just a rounding error of the bigger picture.

So, just going off that history, I suspect that in a few short years the black market for pot would be pretty much gone.  Sure, other drugs, and a few  hold outs growing their own, but not weed as there would be no 'reason' to do it anymore.

I was at a home poker game years ago.  I never hung out with this group and wouldn't go back.  From what I picked up on the host's dealer buddy lived across the street. He said that they can legalize pot, the black market will still exist because people don't want to pay taxes.

I agree with him that people wouldn't want taxes, but they might want a quality controlled, safely produced product.

I wouldn't put too much faith in this guy, he was bragging to strangers that he was dealing. One of the other newly invited players asked him, "How do you know I am not a cop?" 

The black market would still exist, not as large as it was.  The charges and punishment for distributing without a license and tax evasion would be more severe.  The government might not care if you are dealing, but the government does care about taxable revenue.  

Seems sound. The only thing I think might offset that is that there is less overhead in *cleaning* the money in a legitimate economy, less loss there - because, loss is always involved in cleansing money - and that the economies of scale mean it is easier to reach far larger markets in a legitimate market than an illegal one - creating at least some offset to the lost high profit and a better, more equitable distribution profile. The pyramid of production becomes taller, far more levels, and much broader in a legal economy.

The other part was that local economics does not really rely on the total dollars in circulation, but its movement.   So once i showed the amount of flow reduction, i tossed the effects in on last part of the paper.

I'm sure i could do a better job now, that i am not 18 and i understand the world more and its a lot more complex, but i do think the basic premise i had was sound.

Seems reasonable. I'm sure the cartels in South America are a vibrant part of the world economy, and without their purchasing power, many industries would feel a pinch. 

Also - yeah - as a smoker, I can tell you that if you take away *tobacco*, I'm not going to seek out marijuana as an alternative. More likely cocaine or heroin. Weed has a pretty weak punch compared to Coke, Smack and Coffin Nails - which are the big 3 of addiction.

NY legalized the use of the marijuana so the kids don't have to worry about the flavored vapes.

Its because they tried radical control of alcohol before, and didnt work out too well.  So they are a big gun shy.   

Around here on vape, i do think they control advertising, which while not 'perfect' shows they are doing something .  There was also some talk about restricting flavors here.  I dont remember the details.

Menthol isn't a particularly enticing flavor. It isn't like bubble-gum vape. 

But - I also think telling adults, "You can have this dangerous chemical that is addictive, but to remind you it is bad, you can't have it in nice flavors," is bullshit. It is absolutely a black thing. And a huge part of it is that most white smokers will turn down a menthol cigarette. Whenever I was younger and I'd try to bum a smoke off a black dude, they would give me this sad, "Aww," look like they were really bummed that they couldn't help me out, and then hold out their pack and go, "Sorry, dude, I only smoke menthol..." 

And when I'd go, "So did my dad - I'm ok with a menthol," they would get a look of disappointment on their face instantly. "Damnit! Now I gotta give this whiteboy a smoke." 

But I've seen white folks who were *jonseing* for nicotine reject a menthol. 

"Ew. How you can smoke THAT shit?!?" 

So... it works, because of stereotypes both ways.

The FDA is planning to ban menthol cigarettes.   The media is hyping it up saying it will improve the lives of African-Americans.  They are not saying banning cigarettes would save their lives, just that the FDA is doing this wonderful thing.

If we were under a republican president the media would be talking about how the administration was targeting the black community.

Very few people understand that when you ban something you give it MORE power.
A symbol, a flag, a word, doesn't matter what it is -- you're giving it the power to hurt people, to divide them.

If you flipped the switch or beat people when you were 17, at a strange period in society's history - and then things moved on, and you didn't engage in any similar behavior for the next 80 years, and they caught you at the END of it? 

I think this is *exactly* what statutes of limitations are for. It is like rubbing a dog's nose in shit 6 weeks after it happened. Is it to teach the dog a lesson, or because you're really not any better than the dog, it turns out?

The color of his skin isn't important to the story.

I thought they used his latest mug shot as a picture, seeing the picture elsewhere I am not so sure. The picture I originally saw was credited to the police department, other news outlets show an uncropped version of the same picture and I no longer think it is a mug shot.  Why it is credited to the police department I am not sure.

I am assuming the shooting victim must NOT be a POC. 

Because when someone who is a POC shoots a cop or gets shot by a cop, instead of the latest picture of them - we often get their 7th grade graduation picture along with a story about how much promise the kid had and how he had just enrolled in his local Jr. College - with no mention of his recent arrests or that he had just ripped off a Quik-E-Mart for a pack of Swisher's Sweets.

What did it take? Nope, not the fact that it's common sense. It took an observation that it would reduce the number of arrests of people in minority communities.

Whatever. As is always the case with these things, you have to look at the whole picture instead of isolating specific issues. Legalizing *everything* from alcohol to cocaine makes sense, as long as you address the downstream effects. For example, you can't have the public paying for the expense of treating new addicts. You also have to deal with the effects of people driving while stoned, but existing DUI laws ought to cover that already.

Seems like this is a slippery slope that ends up justifying holding descendants of plantation holders guilty for the human rights abuses of their great great grand fathers. 

I am sure he would have been executed or put in a camp if he didn't comply. They are saying he was morally wrong for making the choice he did. With that reasoning there would be no wars because murder is wrong.  Humans will do whatever it takes to survive, including morally wrong things. 

We held von Braun as a hero for getting us to the moon, he wasn't tried.  

Now that he has been convicted I am sure this 93 year-old has learned his lesson and will think long and hard before becoming a guard in a Nazi concentration camp again.  Justice has been served.

I did a bit of reading and found the same thing you are describing - in Europe there aren't a lot of single phase distribution transformers; almost everyone is simply on two legs of a three phase transformer.  In the US we have a lot of split single phase.  So we get 120/240 in most residential systems.  For a mid size commercial building it's three phase so you get 120/208.

Don't get me wrong - 3 phase usually end in the switch box in the wall. Regular rooms only have the 230V which is one phase and ground.

are usually only found in workshops. Note that the diameter of the plug is a about the size of a regular fist in size.

You however usually have the hard wired rotary voltage outlets for them for stoves in the kitchen, and maybe for flow heaters in the bathroom.

sitting in an insulated pool in ac current is like hanging at the end of a big rope that is being shaken up and down 50 times per second in europe, 60 times in the US.

And, since its not grounded (your bath tube regulary is - or should be - use your DVM to find out...), you will also have the great pleasure of the FI only flipping if protective ground gets wet too.

The thing about birds sitting on the 15KV is, that they are small enough and insulated well enough not to get into troubles.

Many people (including me since very recent ;-) don't know that climbing a train wagon may also kill you by toasting you from the wires hanging above you.

Are you sure about that?  Since the water is not grounded, one would think that the electricity would take the shortest path, which is straight from one pole to the other.  Perhaps it would trip the breaker in the power strip, but since the breaker would also be submerged, the next breaker upstream might trip.  The point is, I don't see an electrical path to ground that goes through the bathers.

Are electrical distribution systems in Europe split-phase?  I know most of the continent is 230 volts, but is it actually 230 or is it split 460?

there are two problems:

 - its ac current, so the level changes frequent. the plugs you see are european ones, so its 230V

 - the whater has a resistance, so the voltage level is changing over distance. Your blood is salty, so your body has a lower resistance then the pool whater, so the current will go through your body.

So all in all, pretty deadly to do that for real.

I'm actually wondering what would happen if the power strip had actually been energized and fell into the pool.

On one hand, a proper GFCI would see the ground fault and shut off the circuit.  But on the other hand, the water in an Intex pool is electrically isolated from the ground by the vinyl body of the pool itself.  On the other other hand ... there doesn't seem to be an electrical path from the outlet to the swimmers, since they're not grounded either.

Still, there's not much that can top poolside beer and burgers  ☺

Yesterday, a federal judge in Los Angeles ruled that Warner Chappell Music, a division of the Warner conglomerate (one of the large copyright pigopolists) does not have the copyright over the song it has been claiming for decades, and demanding royalty payments whenever the song is used in another work (movie or TV) or in public (such as being sung at Chuck E Cheese etc).

They were previously bringing in about $2,000,000US per year on royalties for a song to which they never truly had the rights.

By the way, this was the staff of most chain restaurants now sing some other song when you ask them to honor the birthday of someone in your party (which happens to be the reason I am now well over a hundred years old).  I wonder how many will switch to "Happy Birthday To You" now that it's in the public domain.

Aldi was by far out the last to have barcode scanners.

Reason: they're to slow.

Aldi used to have a very limited range of goods (I think << 500), and the typists simply were faster typing the prices from their memory. They were usually faster than you putting it back into the trolley.

When aldi switched to barcodes, the labels weren't at the thumb size that everybody knows in one tiny corner of the box. they filled 1/3rd of the surface of the products, so the scanners were actually faster than the typists.

Once that was done, the number of items they sold grew.
