During cleaning/sorting/pitching last couple of weeks ran across my my Nikon A300. ( also an older one, and a Samsung video recorder thing, both got donated to goodwill )

Damned buttons wont work worth anything. Its due to gunk buildup on the contacts and is common, but to fix it you tear it apart to clean it. Debating if its worth the effort.

Used to be big into the entire thing. But never really made the transition to digital, beyond a couple of nikon coolpix, I should have kept all my gear and made a " digital adapter back " for it. and slowly upgraded the element over the years as better tech came around.

If you wanted a dedicated video camera, with optical instead of digital zoom, you could go with a ILCE Mirrorless dedicated video camera like the Full Frame Sony NEX-VG900 or something newer like the Sony FX Cinema cameras. You can even get a few power-zoom lenses for them if you don't want to mechanically operate the lens to zoom. But honestly, a used full frame Sony A7ii or newer (even the APS-C A6600 with it's killer Continuous Eye AF and IBIS) are just as great for video as they are for photography.

On that note Cannon has made great AF strides with their mirrorless and Nikon has recently tried to get back into the game as well but still lag Sony and Canona and right now Canon and Sony are trading blows for top spot.

I want to link a video (on my cloud storage) that I cut together with Video from my A6600 and Stills from my A7ii, but I'm not sure the etiquette of linking offsite on a first post, but I expect it would be rude.

Whenever I see a "the video guy" shooting video it always seems to be a (probably mirrorless) DSLR, but it does seem as if for those prices I could buy a pretty decent dedicated video camera. The one thing I really would like to have is a decent mechanical zoom. The world of video cameras these days is saturated with digital zoom. Even though they have enough resolution to pull it off, you can still tell the difference ... things get compressed in a weird way. Railroad cars look like they're two feet long, for example.

They're generally cheaper and easier to deal with.

2) If you want a stills camera that does video, go mirrorless.
3) Your camera is probably too old to worry about the glass you currently
have.
4) Sony seems to have the biggest video use, but I don't think their glass
is as good as Canon or Nikon.
5) If Nikon - look at the Z6. The Z6 II is about to come out though, so
if you don't mind being a generation behind, some deals are soon to be had.

6) Buy a video camera.

I've got a Nikon D850. Love it. Would never want to use it for video.
Also, what type of video do you really want to do? I've had success with
both a GoPro and an iPhone, but my video needs are pretty limited. A few
hundred dollar video camera that records to an SD card has served me well.
But I also don't care about 4k, etc. when it comes to video. I'm much more
particular about stills.

* the reason for this is that the aperture control linkage is mechanically
linked to the shutter, so once the shutter is open, aperture is fixed. it's
different on high-end nikon bodies

It all depends on what you're trying to do. You can shoot some good video
that will be far better than cellphone quality. But DSLR stuff doesn't really
achieve digital cinema quality, because of the lenses and secondarily due
to some lacking features in the camera bodies.

Nikon's are the worst of the bunch because their lenses tend to have mechanical
aperture control which can't be changed in the middle of a video shoot on
all but the
most expensive Nikon camera bodies. Nor do they have phase-detect autofocus
integrated on sensor, except on the newest mirrorless bodies.

I use a Nikon D7100. It works with both the old mechanical-autofocus (D-type)
and electronic-autofocus (G-type) lenses. Also the new E-type lenses with
electronic aperture control. All of these lenses will work for video, you
just have to choose a resonable aperture when you start shooting and stick
with it. (Shutterspeed and ISO will still vary automatically, and the sensor
has a lot of latitude, so this is not too bad.) In principle, the E-type lens
should be able to change aperture in the middle of a video shoot too, mechanically,
but it's a question of software support. I own just one E-type lens, everything
else I own is G-type, I'd have to check and see.

Short answer: try it. You'll probably like it. You might like it better with
the newest
full-frame Nikon mirrorless body and an adapter for your old lenses, but I'm
not really up on the details.

Canon and Sony generally considered to have advantages for video.

for beach photography, the killer app is fairly specific: one guy and two
hot babes lying face-down on a beach blanket, shot from a close-in, head-on
perspective.

that's where the selfie stick comes in

I would expect some Youtubers use selfie-sticks for recording, but as for
taking selfies with them... I think such people gain a fair amount of deserved
scorn.

I'm back from teh Jersey Shore and nursing a bit of a sunburn (the sun was so strong, even my perfect Italian skin got a bit burned).

While perusing a Cheap Chinese Crap shop at the boardwalk, I saw this:

(Text client? Go to http://tinyurl.com/nhh5fjh)

At that moment I realized that Netscape has gotten into the smartphone accessories market! It's a selfie stick with a built in web/calendar/directory server!

So of course I had to go look up the current status of the brand. Unsurprisingly, Oracle has it right now. They are even using it a tiny bit. It's anyone's guess whether "web servers" and "selfie sticks" are in different enough market sectors to avoid a trademark infringement lawsuit. Of course, as I mentioned above, this is Cheap Chinese Crap sold at a boardwalk shop, so they could put the Oracle logo on it and still move a million units before anyone caught up with them.

So ... selfie sticks. Is anyone other than teenage girls using them? Are there any applications for "real" photography?

yeah - we get them fleeing over the border. It's kind of a known secret that a handful come through every day for medical care... It's too bad we don't have the resources to help more of them.
