Can we figure out a way to make it distributed? I do know about this. Never went to this site - despite being probably the most retro retrogamer here. But it seems like if anyone can figure out how to keep this alive - it is us - and it seems like a noble undertaking. I'll personally put The Santarium back up - and give it the space necessary... I think I can swing that - even at home - if someone else will administer it. Maybe. We would have to talk. I just can't commit to keeping it secure from Chinese and Iranian haxorz. I need a staff. And it wouldn't be the bandwidth they had. It'll be a trickle. 5mb up if I host the way I was. But if we all get together and figure out how to make it happen.. 

Couldn't we? If not US, then who? It probably can't work if we can't make it work.

The popular site for retrogame nerds, https://myrient.erista.me, is shutting down by the end of March due to a lack of funding.

Apparently, the site was a personal project and ran under a 6k USD per month defficit AFTER donations.

These newsare a heavy blow to retrogamers who weren't prepared for this eventuality, as opposet to paranoid horse dudes running massive servers loaded up with games and stuffs.

In any case, if you want something from there, now it is the time to go grab it before it is all pushed to private piracy groups.

Thankfully I'm not really into movies or videogame roms or anything like that.

I just like the idea of being in a place where the gestapo can't trace the discourse.

Which sucks for the casuals.

I get the idea that there are still some 'sites' out there ( doubt any i used to visit :) ). But the whole point of DHT scanning was to get around all that..  It just scans the actual network..   Sure, sites are "curated" so they have that advantage, and you never know what crap you will get direct, but it was a way around all the censors and blocks and stuff. 

Or at least was. I guess i need to turn my scanner back on. let it run for a few weeks and try some of the 'recent adds'. 

Not technically piracy as i own the DVD ( just missed ripping it long ago )...  But everything is in the closet now ( or gone ) and i really didn't want to dig it out just for one disk.

Not really done this in a while, and wanted to avoid the 'torrent sites' since im way out of that world now, so decided just to use DHT and a magnet collector. But failed miserably. Is this still a thing or did the world move on when i was not paying attention? Back when i cared, It was a wonderful distributed alternative, hitting the network directly instead of hoping your favorite torrent site was still around.

No matter what magnet i try, i get nothing back when it searches to list the files.  I do realize age is a factor, and if no one has the files, then you lose,  but i thought it would still at least list the files.. just no seeds. Even tried some unrelated ones of current 'stuff' that was discovered the same day just to try... same results.   Tried VPN to different states, even another country.  

Caring is sharing and don't be a freaking scumbag leech.

Not real surprised, but sort of funny.

Been running that DHT scraper off and on for a while ( i dont NEED it.. so its more of a toy ).  its got a few hundred thousand entries now.  ( i know, there are millions of magnets out there on the network.. millions.. ) The % of porn to the rest, is just ludicrous..

Regarding the incorrect use of the term piracy...

Seems the bit torrent people ( at least i think its them... ) have a new project. A self-hosted DHT scraper/search engine. Finally one that is usable.  Sure they existed before now, but most were fly by night, unstable, abandoned, a real pain the neck to get to work.. etc.  ( and tried writing my own at one point but never did seem to work right )

From what im hearing most major international shipping companies AND oil companies have stopped all activities in the red sea over the last couple of days, due to out of control piracy ( the real kind )    i think from Yeman, and their 'commitment to Palestine' or some such nonsense/excuse. 

Going to cause shortages and even more rising prices. 

With the SFCA police basically being non-existent, the crime expanding into piracy was bound to happen eventually.
