probably because of the choice of background music.

the video was about a 4.4m tall bicycle (seat hight)

ok, I'm a little heavy, and have to counter my own weight more then he has..

I don't think it is a fun theory but a "new theory", people notice and will try something different.

An example is the third brake light, when they first were installed the number of rear end collisions were reduced, when the third
brake light was a requirement and people got used to them the number of rear-end collisions went back up.

Don't get me wrong, I think the steps are a cool idea, I liked the video and I am going to pass it along, but I think the long term

I first read that as 10KK (an odd shorthand for a million I don't like) KM, which would've been... impressive to say the least.

I probably hit the 10K mark as well last year, but that banks on the fact that biking to class and back most of the year generated miles rather quickly, I never was one for exercise for exercise's sake. Hopefully I can live a mile or two off where I work next so I can easily force myself to get my exercise, and not have to drive at the same time.

(speaking of which, I need to get a new BMX bike too, if that happens. Those things are great for short stop and go trips.)

had the chance to ride a pederson:

http://www.pedersenbicycle.dk/

(probably one of the "stolen design" ones...)

amazing ride. The saddle isn't directly attached to the frame, so you can't steer the bike by whipping your hip. you don't have the tight feedback from the ground, like if you had a suspension; there is none. The handlebar is pretty close, first had problems to get it going straight, but it was an amazing ride.

Next cycle tested was a nihola.com carco bike; first started out as a passenger, pretty fancy. The passenger sits in front of the steering axis, so turns feel a little funny at first.

Then changed the role, now as driver. My passenger was around 90kg, the guy who drove me around first... The 8 gears Shimano gearhub does a nice job in this. Even a ramp of 4 % climb is no problem. Most of the problem was, that the gripshift was operating the other way around, so I hit the wrong gear. It also feels a little odd that you musn't bend over in turns, since they're 3 wheelers. Took another turn with Maja as passenger (~25 kg), that time its almost amazing that you can go off speeding with such a bike, and she soon finds the safety belt and attaches it. The ramp up is next to 'not there' this time, we climb it quickly. As she wanted to get out, she first doesn't find the release button, and the guy who sells them is amazed, that she found the belt. Then I try to lift the cycle, and fail... I guess its > 40 kg and I just can lift two of the 3 wheels.

now if you hate falk-maps like me, this is real fucking cool. You can just crumble the material the plan is printed on, and put it into your pocket like a hanky:

Crumpled City – zerknitterte Stadt

all the most important informations about the city as well as a list of ten „Soulsights“

oh, and btw... once you do more cycling, you start changing parts wearing off (or just becoming replaced by technical superior stuff) on your first bike, you can put that on your second (sort of similar) roadbike.

so most probably the 150$ he mentiones for the steel bike are no realistic number if you'd like to get the same in 'new' state.

Most probably getting such a bike will cost more than 1500$

- lighter (reduce bike weight by 1kg -> 1000$ when you start out with a $800 roadbike of 10 kg)

- more dureable - parts will last longer

- better adjusteable - tuning the hickups out of an expensive bike usually takes less time

- more reliability - parts less probably will fail on you

- more effective - you will get more of your force to the road

well, sort of. A 'Short John' is a cargo bike like the mail delivery guys ride. You won't make the same time with such a bike on that distance; its probably rather heavier than 20 kg and won't have such a good gearbox; which is why copenhagenizes arguments about this are pointless.

on those roadbikes you have to see that the steel one is a used one, which makes the price...

the 3 kg are in relation to the combined rider/bike weight not that much, that they count under such circumstances.

BUT. If you're not riding alone (share the wind with others) like racing or just riding with another bunch of roadbikers, these 3 kg might matter.

I guess in the end such a s00per carbon bike is like your sunday skirt: wear it all day, and it quickly will wear of for nothing.

Just ride it in nice (dry) weather conditions, when racing about with others you're going to have more fun out of it.

I also have some cheap lycra panties (10e) for my everyday commute ( 20 km) and more expensive ones (150E) for racing about (>50 km)

A trekking bike (and now a cross-bike too) for bad weather conditions, and (just an aloy) roadbike for good weather conditions.

so basically, you're saying that the two bikes probably weren't substantially different in many respects. Seems a shame to spend 20x as much on something 3 kilo lighter.

hm, didn't see it from that perspective yet.

my brother told me that its probably about using the lower ends of the handlebar, which reduce your cw-value

first met this article mentioned on copenhagenize.com, who tried to leverage it as a point for:

"commuting with your short john in your work clothes gives you the same time as commuting with any sorts of roadbike wearing lycra"

which definitely wasn't the point, since that guy rode a roadbike both times, a carbon ultra modern one, and a steel roadbike from the late 90'ies, which most probably has just 2 gears less.

not an expression I'm familiar with...

it's an interesting piece, I think.

Basically says that you can't justify buying the fanciest lightest bike out there if all you're using it for is your commute.

In the comments there, people seem to not get the point... They think he's trying to say that it makes no difference no matter what the circumstance.

hm, read this comment about commute time with two roadbikes:

@Finbar do you mean "it _wasn't_ a scientific piece" ?

Anyway here's some figures from bike calculator, gradient zero

Rider 1, 70 Kg, Bike 7 Kg, 300 watts --> 36.99 kph

Rider 2, 70 Kg, Bike 11 Kg, 300 watts --> 36.90 kph

There you have it, a small difference in weight makes hardly any difference. But change the drag by placing rider 2 on the "hoods"

Rider2, Bike 11 Kg, position on the "hoods" --> 40.01 kph

what does 'on the "hoods"' mean here?

you do differential GPS. One needs to know that GPS primarily is a time signal plus the position of the satelite. You get that from several satelites. By the time elapsed from the satelite sending it to you receiving it you know the distance to that satelite. Then you do simple triangulation of those satelites positions and distances to find out your actual position. Because of thats a lot of arithmetics which has to be done in high precision, GPSes use quiet a lot of battery. My Garmin Edge 705 lasts about 10 hours with GPS enabled, and if you put it into a place where it doesn't get any satelite (like with the bike into the cellar) it lasts several days.

Differential GPS works like that:

you put up a GPS receiver station that "knows" its place, so you just need to calculate the difference to what the GPS signal tells it, and send that correction over to the mobile client.

In cars this is done via FM-Radio; you can do that via amateur radio if you want to roll your own.

that way you also get a higher resolution then GPS would offer in first place, plus 'selected availability' (as the military used to call the obfuscation) is next to useless.

SA is currently set to zero and has been since clinton was in office,
and will likely stay that way for a long time given that commercial
aviation and marine navigation is dependent on a reasonably accurate
signal. LORAN ceased operation earlier this year, and as VORs quit
working they're generally just shut down rather than repaired and put
back in service.

Most of the error I see is in maps... when I go lay down tracks, I can
zoom into the 20ft range and still be dead on, even weeks/months later
(satellites in a different constellation, different HDOP). Yet when I
pull the tracks into Google Earth, the tracks are 20-30ft off of where
they are in the aerial photo. This happens mostly
out in the mountains
and remote locations where I ride... In town, I can see what side of the
lane of the highway i'm in. Stupid accurate.

The best resolution I get is about 6-7 feet with my Garmin Etrex. That's assuming the military is not degrading the GPS signal. Does any know if they are still doing that? It's been quite awhile since I checked or cared realy. 12-15 feet is more than enough resolution for me.

What surprises me the most is the map sets. CityNav has a bunch of
dirt roads, i'll find myself way out in the mountains and the little
jeep trail I'm on is mapped and routable on the receiver.

I power my GPS from the {bike|sled|truck}, so a pair of AA's lasts me a

Pretty darned close. Not $400 close, but they are powerfully nice units (Garmin Rino 530HCx), and have built-in weather radios and transceivers for use as backup comms.

Unfortunately, the chargers they come with are very poorly designed and break very quickly, making it impossible to charge the battery packs (which do last a long time). The AA adapter packs don't last nearly so long and are bulky.

bs. i was sitting in the doc's office with a guy who'd pitched forward over a rock 3 days earlier swerving b/c some kid had stopped suddenly on an off-road ride. Helmet was smashed to bits (the helmet apparently looked ok, but the guy at the bike store pulled out the inner lining and it was clearly wrecked). Head inside was fine. Arm was broken, but hey, you can't win 'em all. If the helmet was wrecked, I'm guessing the head would have been wrecked some without it.

I know another guy who was hit by a car and went flying. The injuries to his face and some of his body were serious, but again, helmet was smashed, brain was not. 15 years later, the guy, who's near 80 by now, is still going strong.

my tandem is used by more than one set of drivers, and depending on the persons shoes/preferences its switching to...

- plain old platform pedal

- plain old platform pedal with straps

- Schimano SPD

- eggbeater

and all that depending on who is sitting on which saddle...

So an easy & quick change of Captain and Stoker isn't possible without getting out the inbus key, the 14mm jaw wrench (depending on which pedals you've got) and screw them off and on again.

Most probably the primary target for that sort of thing are bikes that are ridden indoor for training of bike clubs, so everybody can bring their own pedal and exchange / adjust the bike quickly between several members of the club...

well, I think its around 15% climbing rate? Me will have a hard time getting up there, but i'll do.

my every day brings me up to 8%, and I sometimes choose ways that go up to 20%,

yes, with a current car it doesn't matter, you just press the accellerator a little harder

(btw, saw a black lamborgini mousilargo this weeken that did exactly that a little more with a track that had 20% climbing... it was loud, and to get a similar feeling you 'd probably elseways have to fly a jet)

If that way is on your daily commute, or your way home from the supermarket home and you don't want to do it with a car, and don't want to become a (road / Mountain) bike riding jock (like me..) or by an electricaly assisted bike (pedelec) this is a perfect solution

The C ride (11-13mph average) was being led by a friend of mine, but his
ride was 52 miles, which is more than the usual 30-35 that most C rides are,
so nobody went.
Instead everybody got the same idea to go on the D ride (9-11mph avg).
So there were over 30 people, and I recognized a lot of them which means
everybody else was avoiding the 52 mile ride also. But that means there's
going to be a pack of 30 people all going slow to let the slow people keep
up.
I expected the fast group to break off the front as they usually do, but
you never end up with a good group that way, because there's no leader and
the fastest take off, and everybody else straggels behind and there's no group
and it sucks, because I end up riding a lone and getting lost.

But today it worked out quite differently.
 There was this
guy who had never ridden with the club before so he figured he'd start at
the slowest ride and work up to his level. Turns out he's really strong, at
least a B rider (avg 13-16mph) and he was gettin bored quickly, so he kept
asking the ride leader where the next turns was, and then he'd take off. So
I spent the entire ride chasing him.
And there were 2 other people who were basically of the same mind, and they
kept up with us, so we had a nice fast group of 4 that basically did the whole
30 miles together and it was awesome.
I'll never see the fast guy again as he won't ride with my slow C group,
but I met another lady who leads rides who does exactly my pace.
 Win Win.

The banana. Lots of potassium there.

We use Nuun and sometimes Cytomax. Hate-o-rade[1] is too sugary, makes things
worse.

In summer you can also get O3-headaches...

You should carry a bottle with whater, maybe some few bits of apple juice added. Drink much (yea, I most of the time return home with the bottle allmost full :( )

If you're experiencing exhaustion on your way, some dried fruit or berries are perfect to give some power back. A banana also is a good thing for a break.

for muscles its good to drink some Magnesium-Citrat (get it in a drugstore), you can get that in drugstores; the usual MgO2 stuff is next to useless; I call it "no regret powder" ;-)

there also exist tiny salt sticks, but didn't try them yet.

Probably the Gatorade. Mostly the water in the Gatorade. You have a dehydration headache. I get them sometimes after SCUBA diving too. Dry air in the tank sucks the moisture out of your bady with every breathe. They are horrible headaches too...they don't go away for two hours or so.

Most people do not need to eat anything while excecising for less than an hour. You have plenty of fat reserves for energy. No offense...just a general fact. If it's really hot and you are sweating buckets the electrolytes would help.

BTW, I was told by an EMT that Wringer's Lactate is the same thing as Gatorade. Wringer's is what they use to treat shock and heat exhaustion.

no, the word 'druck' simply has several meanings, like put, set or fix each have several dozend replacements in german ;-)

Hopefully there's not a similar hole ready to swallow part
of your house.

We used to live on a property that had two holes as you describe, but much
much larger. I don't know what they were there for, but there was a large
slab on the property, and a concrete ramp came out of the dirt, from deep
deep underground leading up to it. about 4 ft from the slab the ramp was underground,
but you could stick something down about 12 ft from the slab and the ramp
was still there, going underground. We figured this out when attempting to
bury a cable line. :-P

The part of the slab that the ramp lead up to sloped downward into a 2 or
3 ft in diameter hole that seemed to go down forever. Different tangled root
systems blocked seeing how deep it really was or what was at the bottom. it
swallowed probably a yard of dirt and maybe more. I was little at the time,
don't really remember.
Then we had to get a cement truck out there to finish filling it and fill
in the recessed part of the slab that went down to ensure that anything spilled
in the vacinity went down the hole.

The concrete wasn't oil stained but it looked I guess like someone built
some sort of oil disposal for trucks or larger equipment.

There was a similar hole out in a random location in the property that took
substantial dirt to fill. That didn't hold well and it sank back down enough
to get a truck stuck should you come across it. We had to top it off every
year.

Weird huh?

my car. I shone a flashlight in, very dark.
I took a pickaxe and opened up the top of the hole. It was about 1foot in
diameter.
Pitch black. so I took my tape measure out. 20 feet deep. Turns left then
goes another 5 feet or so.
So I bought a usb extension cord and dropped my webcam down there. No treasure
sadly.

Took a lot of cement to fill it up.
I expect the hole is now growing around the cement.

way humans have to open their mouth when they see things they don't usually
see.
He said "you must be joking me" one time. No, nobody was joking you, it
was really happening, in fact you were seeing it yourself.
He said "holy crap" three times. So there was a mess on the floor inside
the house as well as out.
He said "that's insane" four times. Well, if it was insane the first time,
yea, it's probably still insane the other three times too.
He said "I've never seen anything like this." seven times. Admittedly, the
hail storm got worse, so in fact even though it was hailing a few seconds
ago, it was hailing MORE now so okay, he could have in fact never have seen
anything like this 7 times in 4 minutes.
But the thing that really annoyed me, and maybe it's deep down because I'm
so against these types
of things.
Between him and the kid, they said "oh my god" seventeen count 'em (I did)
SEVENTEEN times in four minutes and seven seconds. That works out to once
every 14.53 seconds.
What does it mean? Why can the man not just shut up and enjoy the show?
Must open mouth. Must express bewilderment.
And that's on top of all the other things he kept repeatedly saying.
That averages out to one I-can't-keep-my-mouth-shut comment every 7.72 seconds.
How annoying must it be to live with that man.
