<p>I had the same issue some weeks back, an incoming spool from uncnsrd would crash the database with the same message as seen below. As far as I could determine, nothing was wrong with the database. It hasn't reoccured yet, however. </p>

<p>Message from syslogd@ns1 at Apr  2 03:04:20 ...<br /> citserver[15875]: bdb(): txn_commit: Illegal seek</p>
<p>Is this related to the thing that Freakdog is trying to solve?</p>
<p>My installation is from the Debian sources, compiled and installed about a month ago using 'apt-get'. Basically a "hands free installation" type of thing, ideally suited for someone like me who "once had skills" which have severely suffered from over a decade of non-use! ;)</p>

<p>for the db assertions; I've worked on this one too.</p>
<p>the code distributed across several files has been concentrated into one file, and got additional logging;</p>
<p>Also the write frequency to that db table has been massively reduced; till now we would refresh the record entry everytime we see it; now we only refresh it if its 4 days old.</p>
<p>Once it reaches the age of 7 days, its expired - the message would be re-fetched.</p>
<p>The RSS-Reader also has a similar pimp: we now store an md5 sum of the raw rss document in that table, and skip parsing if its the same.</p>
<p>This also has to be done at max 4 days.</p>
<p>So we should at least have some sorts of change to all of your troubles - so lets see whether we have all of it fixed.</p>
<p>(RSS - my machine was fetching 3 dozend ones - parsing took significant cpu power...)</p>

<p>Ok...so we've been discussing 2 issues...one is the issue of networking getting hung up, another (this was discussed in the Citadel Support room) is the occasional database related shutdown.</p>
<p>Mine shutdown, yesterday...I'm attaching the log from just yesterday (haven't perused it, yet, but the only reason mine usually shuts down is DB related).</p>

<p>fd, i think its ok to handle this over here; most users in cit sup don't care about this topic, and it spoils their backlog.</p>
<p>I did some stabilization and test work on the git master source last week;</p>
<p>It has (again ;-) some major overhaul of the ignet stuff - this time the config &amp; queueing part.</p>
<p>I'd like to know whether it fixes your incident.</p>
<p>We also now have some more debugging for the NTT-List which may be the source of your problems.</p>
<p>Plus some rework of the code that manages the seen-lists - reducing frequency and hopefully the database assertions.</p>

I'm just playing around with some fun ideas. I have a bunch of
server resources and quite enjoy dosbox experiments. Hah. So, I'm currently
finding out how reliable it is to actually have a few C86es on one of my servers
net with eachother in a sort of fake multinode setup, so a user could telnet
in and get a random node of several, and they are all single instances of
C86 in dosboxen, which then do anytime netting with eachother using dosbox's
virtual modems. Very fun, so far... in order to get C86 to dial another telnet
system you have to use octal IP addresses as the system ID because it filters
non-digit characters from dialstrings. So that's fun. And that's only the
beginning...

 Anyway, sucks to hear the gateway code is in disrepair. Lots of things are
sill in disrepair with the system I'm putting together too so we share something
in common at the moment ;-).
 If you ever feel like messing around with it, it would be fun to have another
system to net with. I also mailed Hue, Jr on his dosbox'ed C-86 Test System.
 It was fun to see that system still online!

 Anyway, no guarantees, just haxing around and only one node is accessible
at the moment, but this may or may not work if you're bored: telnet://bbs.friendbear.com

</blockquote>
<p>Someone ought to update the documentation, then. The Citadel Administration Manual still shows:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The next step is to arrange for the server to start. The “citserver” program is the main Citadel server. Before we cover the recommended method of starting the server, let's examine its usage options:</p>
<p>citserver [-hHomeDir] [-xDebugLevel] [-tTraceFile] [-lLogFacility] [-d] [-f]</p>
</blockquote>
<p>And</p>
<blockquote>
<p>”-xDebugLevel” - Set the verbosity of trace messages printed. When -x is used, it will suppress messages sent to syslog (see below). In other words, syslog will never see certain messages if -x is used. Normally you should configure logging through syslog, but -x may still be useful in some circumstances. The available debugging levels are:</p>
<ul>
<li class="level1">
<div class="li">0 - Emergency condition; Citadel will exit immediately</div>
</li>
<li class="level1">
<div class="li">1 - Severe errors; Citadel may be unable to continue without attention</div>
</li>
<li class="level1">
<div class="li">2 - Critical errors; Citadel will continue with degraded functionality</div>

 The issue, now, is that I'm leaving my job with the cloud company and down't

<p>Ok...chances are that it will happen as of the 28th...I expect that the cloud instance on which DP2 currently runs will be shut off and destroyed some time on that date.</p>
<p>I'll be building a Centos 6 system onto which I'll migrate DP2 once I've returned from Texas to Indiana, but because my server in Indiana is running CentOS 5.8 and I was completely unable to get the latest Citadel versions running under that version, I'll need to build out Centos 6.3 to make it happen...but I'll do what I can to minimize the amount of time DP2 is down, in order to get networking back into play as quickly as possible.</p>

<p>ok, new citadel networking code &amp; backend code is deploied on uncensored.</p>
<p>in general news, please upgrade to the latest source and revalidate:</p>
<p>  - on recent linuxes you can use splice enabled code; which can be enabled by adding this to your environment: LIBCITADEL_ENABLE_SPLICE=1</p>
<p>  - you can revalidate this by pressing the new circle icon in the room preferences sharing tab; the spool directory should then fill up with message files, which later get combined to one file.</p>
<p>if the one file thing works, splice is ok to use for you.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>since we had some troubles in the networking code, i've re-sent the messages in citadel support and ignet unlimited to your nodes (using that very same button ;-)</p>

somehow, they removed the static IP option from my Uverse internet.

<p>unless you enable coring, and kill a stuck citserver with SIG11 and share some delights with us, we probably won't shed more light on why removing the file unfucked it.</p>

 Well, I see that you modified your init script to make the IP address of
your citadel system go away, which is probably confusing the hell out of citserver
while it tries to shut itself down.

 That's my guess, anyway. If you want to experiment you could try to temporarily
take that out and see if it makes a difference.

 But yes, it fails to shut down for me too.

it's kind of interesting --

 All of the traffic bound for dogpound2 is no longer sitting in uncnsrd's
spoolout directory, but rather in dogpound2's spoolin directory. Furthermore,
dogpound2's spoolin directory contains a message that I sent to myself from
dogpound2 to uncnsrd (which is where it's supposed to go first; the networker
then sweeps it up and routes it).

 It seems that the problem is that dogpound2's networking events are not firing.

 Where are your citadel logs?

 Should be interesting.

<p>after ugrading to latest stable?</p>
<p>probably a problem with the change to the way netconfigs are handled now?</p>
<p>i've changed it not to use tmpfile which would write configs to /tmp/ but rather create the file in the target directory, and rename it.</p>
<p>by that way we don't loose netconfigs (rss feed urls pop collectors, mailing list subscribers, node links..) if the filesystem containing the netconfig directory is full.</p>
<p>maybe for some reason in non-.deb mode the paths aren't built correctly?</p>

 Looks like the filesystem in which Citadel lived filled up on me, and everything
went to hell...even after I expanded the filesystem, Citadel would start,
but would not answer any ports. I've restored back to midnight on August
23rd...hopefully, the disruption is minimal.
