I'd start with peaches and cream yarn, it's a natural fiber(acrylics can be annoying to work with) and it's not stretchy, so it'lll help you figure out tension. It's also sold just about everywhere that sells yarn at all. The wrapper will tell you what size hook to get, and I suggest you get a size larger and a size smaller as well.

I would be interested in starting.  I would google the best starting materials, but I trust the "Uncensored" cit community to help me out.

I know a high school boy that does crochet items for girls.  He is not stupid.

An alternate to the bobble, is the popcorn stitch. It's even easier. Make 5 dc in one stitch. After the 5th st is made, drop the loop from your hook, insert the hook into the top of the first dc made, grab the dropped loop and sl st. Popcorn made. It's even more dimensional than the bobble stitch. 

Holy cow!  that's a lot of stitching for one stitch!  LOL

Pattern for the shawl on Flickr. Made with Jiffy 5 Bulky yarn, that's why it only took 6 hours. Super quick, super soft and really lovely. Easy pattern I highly recommend. Big bang for your buck and time investment!

Learning two entirely different approaches to working with beads in one weekend? Combining my love of textile techniques with beading? Learning more wire techniques than just how to make a ring? The ability to make a ring for $4 plus the price of a bead? Learning something that suddenly turns the beading approach into a mosiac of possibilities?

I don't know... it was just flat out cool. 

This weekend was SO MUCH FUN!!! I love the new techniques I picked up and learned.

Yup, it's a ring... or a broach or a pendant. (kindof like the thuoght of that on a string of velvet ribbon) The point is to learn how to embroider with beads.

I made a purse this weekend with Noro. Felted up nice, but I rushed it. I think it needs another cycle or two. I love it though, amazing how soft wool becomes when felted!

The machine seems perfect for scarves and pieces that involve large areas of stockinette like sweaters and felted items.  It looks like there's still some hand-knitting involved for edging, or you can do crochet edging.  Since it also only does 100 stitches per row up to size 10.5 needles (about 38" max width) it's got some limitations. You can add more of them together for longer rows, which I'll do at some point since I really hate seaming and one can't make a sweater over size M.

The rows all look very even, except in spots where the machine jammed (jamming is a major annoyance, but there are supposed to be ways to deal with that I have yet to learn.)  I think the nice neat rows make it easier to size and match up seams, and the added hand-knit parts will make up for the uniform stitches made by machine.

Seriously, does it seem to have the flexibility to do pretty much anything you want? Are there still things youw ould have to handknit?

Does it come off looking machineknit, or does it still ahve that hand knitted irregular loveliness to it? 

I just got started with the knitting machine.  This thing is *way cool*.  It took me about 1/2 hour to set it up and figure out how to use it.  Then I set it up with some Bliss yarn (it's a bulky fur/eyelash novelty yarn: http://tinyurl.com/y6fuln) and knit up the entire 82-yard ball in about 5 minutes.  I forgot to set up the row counter, but it's about 16 rows of 100 stitches.

There's a lot I have to learn about using it, but it took me 4 hours to knit up one ball by hand, so I think this was well worth the money (maybe even if I had paid full price for it).  The only complaints I have are that takes over 3' of table space for the duration of the project, and it makes a really noisy clickety-clack sound.  Once I figure out how to do garter stitch, lacework & cables, I'll let you know how it holds up.

You know, I have some homespun that I bought to make a cardigan out of. I'm about halfway through the back panel and I can't take it anymore.

I think I'll make my dad a simple scarf/hat/glove set for Xmas out of it. Somthing that will go fast and not drive me nuts in the process. 

I never remember to take pictures of my projects before I give them away.  I really should have snapped grelf's Irish hiking scarf & hat before he started wearing them.  The pattern's here: http://www.helloyarn.com/irishhikingcarf.htm.  A little challenging for a first project, but it was well worth it.

I'l have to make another sophie bag (http://www.magknits.com/warm04/patterns/sophie.htm).  The one I already made is looking kind of worn.

But the model is adorable!!
