I also have a 40" LCD with a 720p screen and an older computer built into

XBMC can be made to boot on that.

<p>XBMC is clearly the answer.</p>
<p>the newer pi with 512MB ram is probably a cheap and well explored option.</p>
<p>however, just booting a pi-bootimage on the cubieboard did not work. (which has 1g Ram but uses the same SOC - A10 all winner)</p>
<p>I didn't bother to look at the boot of the PI image (which works on one of the older PIs with 256 MBRam) via the serial console.</p>
<p>One main difference between pi and cubie board which might be pro-pi is that the pi also has a FBas chinch plug for elderly TV, the cubieboard just a HDMI port.</p>
<p>If you care, I could have a look at whats going wrong with the xbmc boot image on the cubie board.</p>

<p>Such apps exist, but they work by sending remote control signals into "Teh Cloud™" which then relays them back downstream to your set top box.  And it only costs $9.99 per month to be able to do that!</p>
<p>Of course, it's our own fault for being st00pid.  We should just put our racks of A/V equipment on the side of the room where we're actually sitting, leaving nothing on the other side except screens and speakers.  Then we wouldn't <em>need</em> remote controls.</p>

<p>well, I have used the b/w display version of the harmony.</p>
<p>since the remote tries to be clever, it depends on the devices how good everything works out.</p>
<p>if you only have absolute controll commands (power on; power off; input n} everything works fine.</p>
<p>but if you have one device which has i.e. toggle power on/off or toggle lists like next input; next input,..., you're completely lost.</p>
<p>The harmony tries to mirror the state machine inside of the device; if a command is lost, you have everything out of sync, and you have to fix the state machine on the harmony.I</p>
<p>I liked my st00pit programmeable remote that came with my onkyo; but it died by some beer shed over it :-(  harmony? no thanks.</p>

I have thought about that. But we now live in a world of 7&quot; tablets for under 99&euro;, can&#39;t somebody fix an IR port to them and make a real stylish remote control app? The 79&euro; variant of the Logitech Harmony can only control 5 devices... My Pioneer D812 has a remote with support for 8 devices, but has some memory issues and would need 3-4 programmable buttons more. I am still not willing to spent 150&euro; for an almost ordinary remote.</p>

too. I had everything connected up to my A/V receiver as well, a Yamaha RX-550.
When I made the switch from DirecTV to AT&T U-Verse, though, I suddenly had
a reason to use HDMI. I've had a PS3 longer than that, but never really used
it enough to demand HDMI connections.

Now, I still have all the audio going to the A/V receiver, and all the video
feeds, with the exception of an old VCR, go directly to the TV. Since there
are now three components involved--source, A/V receiver, and TV--I got a Logitech
Harmony universal programmable remote.

It's not cheap, but it works great. It's very easy to program, and it even
has an on-board "Help" button if something goes wrong. It will go step-by-step,
asking simple yes or no questions about whether components are on and set
to the right inputs. Very easy to use.

<p>On the analog TV I had everything connected via SVHS/Hosiden, looped through the A/V amp, since the woman's acceptance factor of having only one simple remote control for everything is quite huge.</p>
<p>When I wrote my original rant I had just exchanged the TV set and I didn't touch the wiring out of poor lazyness and only wondered why the DVB-S signal was monochrome and I had to switch back to Composite. Then I read the manual and found out the manufacturarer was too cheap to put in SVHS decoders, so I was back to composite completey. Which my A/V amp looped fine through the Hosiden connectors, somehow. Anyway, composite is even awful on analog SD displays.</p>
<p>Then I got a new DVB-S receiver, this time with HDMI support and now I see the light. Although the TV is only capable of 1080i and I am running on 720p now, the image is perfectly clear on the HD stations and even the SD signals look far better now, although the variety in the signal's color hues, etc is still more visible than on analog.</p>
<p>I also connected the DVD player via some ultra highquality SCART cable directly into the TV and found out that both the TV and the player are able to communicate in YUV/Component via SCART (the original scart specs only supported RGB afaik), so I am able to get at least a progressive SD signal through to the screen. Which vastly improves DVD signal and Baraka as well as my Cashern DVD look brilliant again. They are my reference material, since they have the highest bitrate. Cheap DVDs still look crap but at least the major labels do some good work and animated childrens movies are acceptable to watch.</p>
<p>The Wii is ok too, only downside is that I do not find a cable with long enough and separate audio connectors to get the sound into the amp again...  (Also, cheap YUV  cable suck donkey balls, since they lose signal too often!)</p>
<p>So, all in all, HD TV screens with proper analog inputs is quite likeable, but the downside is that I'd need to upgrade the A/V amp in order to get an acceptable WAF again... We now need two remote controls and select the inputs on the TV instead of using one single input and change the source via the amp's RC. (But this makes it possible to tune contrast/brightness/colour on every single input)</p>
<p> Now, the thing that really unnerves me is that I need to find a fast enough USB flash drive in order to properly record/timeshift HD signals on the DVB-S device. Is there a flash drive that is able to write at about 10MB/s? The receiver claims that he needs this speed...</p>

This might be an odd place for this, but...

I've been fooling around with Amazon Cloud lately.

They have a machine you can install up there that runs an instance of Wowza.
So if you put a bunch of media files up there, and do the magic things required
to make Wowza work perfectly for you, you can create your own television channel
for home viewing, with your own programming.

And it'll stream to your phone. Or tablet. Or desktop.

 Which is rather spiffy.

Not sure about costs yet. I suspect, relative to setting up a television
station, it's very inexpensive. I know setting up the Cloud machine is remarkably
inexpensive, and fantastically flexible (to allow you to hone in on exactly
the pricepoint you want, to get charged only for what you use).

Honestly, this stuff is rather freaky.

<p>well, I guess if you give them enough bandwith, it would work.</p>
<p>You also can see the same on other astra satelite channels where the broadcaster tries to save money by using less bandwith; regardless whether its HD or not.</p>

Sometimes the broadcaster scales it once, and then your TV scales it again
if it isn't a perfect match, and artifacts show up all over the place.

The other reason it's better to upscale locally is because the low definition
signal probably has less compression applied to it, so you're not going to
get as much loss. Depending on your provider, of course. Here in the US,
the largest cable MSO (Comcast, aka Comcrap) puts *three* high definition
channels on a 6 MHz slot, resulting in lots of visible compression artifacts
and skipped frames. Analog never had these problems :)

I inherited a bunch of high-end consumer-grade audio gear made in the early-
to mid-1980's from my wife's aunt. I haven't really been able to enjoy the
equipment until recently, and it still needs some work, but I can definitely
understand the concept of high-fidelity with this stuff!

I put in Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album--remastered CD--and I literally
heard things in the production that I had never heard before. The ability
of the stereo system at reproducing sound is amazing.

Then I decided to listen to one of the Queen's Greatist Hits CDs I have.
I love Queen's music, and I'm sure they had good sound engineers when all
their studio tracks were recorded, but the music had nowhere near the stereo
imaging and presence that the remastered "Wish You Were Here" had. It left
me a little disappointed.

 Then it
hit me. I had read comments from audiophiles before about how high-end equipment
had changed their musical tastes. Not so much in terms of genre, but in terms
of being more discriminating. I wouldn't consider my stereo gear to be high-end
by today's standards, but its ability to reproduce sounds works just as well
for mediocre recordings as it does for good recordings.

Guess I'll have to start looking for remastered tracks of Queen, too!

<p>Analog media have/had the benefit of more enjoyable errors! A tape slowly degrading is something you only really notice when it is far too late, a CD degrades digitally. Either it sounds good or is annoying as hell.</p>
<p>Same has to be said about CRT vs modern video displays. My old CRT TV which we had to replace because we got some big lcd had a really brilliant display, DVDs looked astonishing, even DVB-S looked really good across all channels. The new TV is a perfect noise amplifier, budget DVDs look butt ugly, even my special edition of Baraka looks crappy. Same with DVB-S, only some TV stations really look proper. Contrast or color hue differences are far more visible :(</p>
<p>Now I need to upgrade DVD to BD and the sat receiver to something with hdmi out, too...</p>
<p>I also had to buy a compenent cable for the Wii because rgb via scart isnt progressive, although it could be, technically. Damn you americans with your crappy YUV stuff!!!!</p>

That's funny. With the exception of zooer who recanted, everybody misunderstood
me in one way or another.
I meant pretty much what I said.
I have CDs filled with mp3s, (none of which by the way were sampled from
my own CDs) so I did no converting to mp3, I did no sampling of CDs, I did
no converting FROM mp3 to anything else.
All I did was take a whole lotta CDs with an iso9660 filesystem of mp3s
and copy them to a hard drive. When they're all there, I'm going to reburn
those same mp3s to DVDs so I'll need less of them.

 As
for "care about the quality" I have had a lucky life.
I listen to music in my car and in a room with a few loud computer fans.
I never am anywhere quiet enough to really appreciate quality of sound coming
from a lossy compression scheme.
The vast majority of the time I can't even hear the radio over the wind
noise in my car because I always have the windows open somewhat.
I used to have a stereo that could play crystal clear over the wind noise
it was so loud, but I'm too old and it's too loud and I want to save what
hearing I have left.
so crappy quality is fine by me.

And in fact there are plenty of cases where a slowed down song or an oversaturated
tape actually made the song more enjoyable to listen to.

 The speakers I have, a pair of A/D/S L2030B's (see http://tinyurl.com/cgm8jfu
for specs and pictures), are designed so they can be bi-amplified. A switch
on the back disables part of the internal crossover, allowing the woofers
to be driven directly. The mid-range and tweeters are still behind the internal
crossover.

The idea is that by limiting the frequency range the amplifiers have to deal
with, clipping due to transients will be less likely, distortion can be reduced,
and a few other benefits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bi-amping has some
more info.

The nice thing about USB mics is that the ADC is integrated, and presumably
well matched to the job it has to do. Bypassing the cheap ADC found in a

Unless you've got a really good sound
card, you may not be getting the best ADC components.

XLR, or more to the point, balanced audio signals, are definitely a must
for profressional setups, but is a PITA when having to integrate professional
and consumer gear.

I was looking for an external electronic crossover for my home stereo system.
Most of my searches ended up falling into one of three categories.

 1. Passive crossover units for car audio.
 2. Professional-level electronic crossovers for PA systems or concert venues.

 3. Audiophile-level electronic crossovers.

I clearly wasn't interested in anything from the first category. The third
category carries a huge price mark-up. That's left me with the professional
gear. However, most of that gear uses balanced audio, either using XLR or
TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) connetors. My home
stereo gear uses unbalanced RCA connectins. It was relatively easy to find
cheap XLR-to-RCA or TRS-to-RCA adapters, but everything I had read said that
the signal levels are different between balanced and unbalanced audio. That
would mean additional eletronics to convert back and forth.

I did finally find a crossover unit that has unbalanced RCA connections.
Just need to save up some $$$'s now.

You can probably get that out of a professional mic that you've somehow plugged
into your standard mic input, but most professional mics require XLR pin connections.
You'd have to adapt that to the 1/8th inch mic jack on your computer, which
requires buying some other part to maintain.

With my mic, I just have the stand, the mic, and the USB cord plugged into
the computer. I'd be screwed if I needed this mic plugged into a mixer, but
for my needs, this is pretty good.

I'm going to be appearing on a webcast on May 2 (see the CitaNews room for
more info on that) and I'm going to be needing a decent microphone for this
purpose. The prep notes specifically say that the microphone built into a
webcam isn't good enough, and with my a/v background I've got to say I agree
with them.

So I'd like to buy a USB microphone, not only for the webcast but to perhaps
record other things in the future (screencasts, the Big Butt Bear show, etc).
Any suggestions? I know fleeb has a really nice one, but for the infrequent
use this is going to get I don't really want to break the bank.

event. It was the first time I'd done any real A/V work for a public event,
and though there were some issues, I was able to get everything working pretty
well.

My son's elementary school decided to do an Iron Chef-inspired competition
event as part of a local health-awareness program. Two chefs from local restaurants
competed head-to-head, to create dishes that are healthy, taste good, and
use local ingredients.

The chefs did all their cooking in the school's kitchen, which, though connected
to the cafegymatorium, is physically separate. The event planners wanted
both audio and video streamed into the main room for everyone to witness.

The original plan was to use an Apple iPhone and an iPad connected via Facetime.
The iPad would be connected to a projector for video, and a microphone set
next
to the iPad's built-in speaker for audio. This didn't sit well with me, and,
luckily, it turns out the school already had a PA setup in the cafegymatorium
(separate from the school's main PA system). I figured I would just patch
into that system for audio. I came in a day early to get a look at the system,
and, much to my surprise, they had a wireless microphone setup.

Two Shure SLX-series wireless mic systems, to be exact. One with an SLX2
handheld mic, and the other with an SLX1 lavalier mic. This made things incredibly
easy, and, the signal was strong enough to reach all the way across the room
from the kitchen to the SLX4 receivers on-stage. There was a little trouble
getting both mics to operate simultaneously, but after realizing that the
group and channel numbers on each mic had to match with each receiver, I got
it working.

The night of the event comes and I show
up a little early to make sure everything is working. The iPad and iTouch
owners try to get Facetime to connect with no success. This goes on for a
good 20 minutes before I finally tell them to start downloading Skype. I
grab my laptop from my car, fire it up, get it connected to the projector,
and, within minutes, have Skype video streaming from the iPad into my laptop.

The event planners decided that, since there was only one lavalier mic, they
only used the handheld mic as it wouldn't be fair to have one chef mic'ed
and the other not. Unfortunately, the handheld mic didn't do well for picking
up what the chefs were saying.

If I can help out with another event, my wife suggested that we could rent
an additional lavalier mic for the night and just use a standard corded-mic
for any other announcements.

<p>Your average pig is suitable to be butchered for meat. It is a single purpose animal. But if you'd improve it, like make it give milk, you'd have an enhanced pig. Now make it grow wool and let it lay eggs, it would be one hell of a multipurpose animal, serving you meat, milk, eggs and some wool. It is an idiom, translating it does not make much sense, but I was lacking a proper way of describing it. After some search on dict.leo.org I found "swiss army knife" and "all dancing and all singing" to be terms which resemble that meaning.</p>
<p> @dothebart: Yes, but Squeezebox is over the 100€ mark and I am just not willing to pay that much. The Xoro device has a 3.5" color display and is 50€ cheaper. It is a linux device as I have read somewhere, too.</p>

<p>well, the logitech squeezebox is a little more expensive, but its worth it imho since its whole userland is opensource.</p>

<p>I stand corrected, just when I gave up my search, the GF accidently found somethign on the netz while searching for something else: AEG IR 4436 for 70€. Looks decent but recensions on amazon are not that good, only 3 stars. Not that I really trust those reviews, but while searching I found kind of the egg-laying wool-milk-pig: Xoro HMT 350</p>
<p>It even has an sd card slot (Aeg's didn't), normal FM radio and can play FLAC! But on top of that it has a display and allegedly plays even avis and stuff like that. I already own a Xoro dvd player, which was the best priced one for the feature set it has included on the market, when my old one died. (I know that proper geeks should build their own HTPC, but the Women's Acceptance Factor is of high importance here.) This Xoro Wifi Radio only costs 79€ so I think it's a steal.</p>

<p>In reply to my wifi webradio device rant:</p>
<p>The market seems indeed not to exist! Not a single device on sale on Deal Extreme or China Vision! You could get Nokia-lookalike handys running android, with tv receiver and dual sim or anything you ever dreamed of as a car multimedia system to replace your normal radio, not to mention all the totally unnescessary light and sound emitting fun gadgets at astonishing low prizes. The various mobile phones and tablets have about every feature ever invented onboard, but no, nobody did built a wifi radio. I am not really willing to pay 100€ for one, not even for christmas.</p>

When something is
being produced in large quantities, the price tends to drop. This is why
a plain old access point costs more than one with a router/firewall built
into it, for example.

If the Wifi music players ever become commonplace, they will also become
cheap. Don't look for this to happen, though; it is more likely that the
mass market will prefer A/V equipment such as televisions with built in Ethernet.

<p>What is the excuse for the atronomical price of Wifi radios?</p>
<p>You get a whole modemrouter for around 30-50€, even one with more than one guest AP mode. These things are <em>sending</em> and not only receiving. Ok, they don't have a display, but they squeeze a half decent display into every non-wifi radio everywhere. I don't even require a touch interface, some wheel or keys are fine. You can get whole mobilephones (crappy ones) for free or around 10€.</p>
<p>Heck, you get a decent mobilephone for around 86€ with 3" color touchscreen <em>and wifi</em>. For around 200€ you get the whole package of BT, Wifi, GPS, GSM, FM and a geiger counter in one tiny mobile phone. And for some big bulky and ugly radio with ubarcrappy accustics they charge 100€ or more just because it has Wifi?!</p>
<p>Even if you don't want wifi, it is not possible to get a half decent fm radio which looks good, sounds ok, has working SD Card/USB support and a display which was not constructed with the purpose to illuminate the whole super bowl all by itself. At least not if you don't want to pay the Apple, Bang&amp;Olufsen or $Overprized_Designer fee.</p>
<p> </p>

<p>,it wakes me up in the morning, and when i'm at my second home, there it gives me access to music and internet radio with my choice of music without any hassle.</p>
<p>about hacking it more... well... I already have a big timesink you might know ;-)</p>
<p>I still like its sound quality a lot (which compares to a JBL Control 1)</p>
<p>If you like an open product, I still recommend bying it. Its all GPL from the linux kernel part, and the logitech created userland was even licensed under a BSD license.</p>
<p>Though the build system &amp; dependency management makes compiling it yourself a litte problematic, i'd name it _the_ opensource mainstream hardware buyable next to factory default unlocked android phones (which in fact are not that much, most of them require jailbraking therefore)</p>
<p>Its a little of a pity that they didn't upgrade the squeezebox boom hardware (true stereo speakers, led display) with the squeezebox radio core. (color TFT display, more powerfull CPU, dual coil stereo-&gt;mono speaker)</p>
<p>If you have your music on some networked disk, and like to have easy access to it (with a UI operateable by a 7year old), the squeezebox is your friend.</p>
<p>Compared to an average CD player, its not as easy to install &amp; operate, but I guess that like comparing billy the kid with rambo. For somebody who drank the apple I* koolaid, it might be the wrong choice, but for an average geek like you (and your family once you made it work) its perfect.</p>

<p>Sony: crap</p>
<p>Onkyo: worse crap than Sony</p>
<p>I would go with nothing less than Yamaha, which still being low-end is VERY acceptable. Actually surprisingly so considering price. Unless you opt for one of their truly expensive units. Then you are getting true high-end quality. But you have to PAY for that.</p>
<p>And then there's LEXICON. That is what you TRULY want - although I would not advise that unless you are prepared to put about five grand into speakers, about ten grand into GOOD pre-amps, and another 3 to 5 grand into amplifiers, about 2 grand into a REAL subwoofer (or 4 grand for two of 'em), and about 5 grand in REAL cabling.</p>
<p>But then, this is me, with about 60 grand in "home" theater gear in my living room - more than once have I heard "you could buy two CARS for what that stuff costs!" True enough...</p>

<p>well, for 125 E (which is the cheapest offer I found, purchased mine for 130) You 'll have a hard time to find a netbook these days. Plus the Netbook comes with _crappy_ speakers, so you'll have to throw in another 80E for some higher quality pc speakers... Yes, the squeezebox radios speaker is _good_, i'd compare it being the little brother of a jbl Control 1.</p>
<p>And, the netbook won't work with the standby / full on power consumption</p>
<p>Plus, Maja could operate it (just finished first grade) in half a minute, and make it play her most favourite Amy McDonald song.</p>

For that price
you could easily buy a small netbook and leave it hooked up to your entertainment
center -- and do much more with it.

Of course, every year it gets increasingly more likely that at least one
piece of equipment in even a small rig will be capable of streaming online
media. Perhaps it's your video game system, or a set top box, or even the
television. In my home we occasionally watch YouTube in the living room using
the Wii as a web browser. There's also a player for pretty much everything
on the Verizon FiOS set top box, but it requires a computer somewhere on your
network running a "media manager" program (which ... you guessed it ... isn't
available for Linux).

There's also a standard protocol for this type of thing, but it doesn't yet
enjoy pervasive adoption. It's called DLNA (Digital Living Network
Alliance) and it defines a standard way for the A/V equipment in your living
room to access the media resources available on your computer. I really wish
that either Nintendo or Verizon would get on board because there are plenty
of DLNA servers available for Linux.
