They're *all* social networking parties. In your teens and college, the goal is to get laid. 

In your late 20s and early 30s, the idea is really to have a good time - but you're also trying to meet new people, to have more good times, and because honestly - there may be opportunities in the people you meet. 

In your late 40s and late 50s, you do it because the clock is ticking - and to keep your circle of friends from dwindling in case you find you need opportunities. 

A party is... by definition, social networking. Connecting and exchanging with multiple nodes that are all interconnected. In this case, people.

Also, I don't remember many of those being organized. MOst people used conferences for that sort of purpose.

We called them MUPTs. Modem User Pizza Thingies. 

Though they weren't ALWAYS at Pizza parlors - they often were. 

Been to a few BBS parties,  couple of IRC parties ( 20+ years ago.. ). Met 3rd/current wife at one actually.  2nd at a BBS home.

But that was before the influx of buttheads.

I do remember one party where a guy sat in a beanbag and stared at a spare phone all evening...  I ended up naming it for him. "ET, the Extra Telephone"    At one point "ET go home" and it flew across the room. I guess he had an argument with it. Donno for sure, i was too busy breaking the couch leg ( long story there.. too many people on one corner at once )

Or our one friend that we would tie to the bar so he wouldn't wander off and get in trouble, but still could drink. He would bark at people as they passed. 

Oh, and dont go see yesshows on acid.  sort of pointless  ( or the mall and jumping out of a moving car on the way home..  dumb move in that case. learned an important lesson *stay the F home*)

We threw pretty epic parties in Ohio, but all the parties here happen at other people's places - and we just haven't pursued that kind of social hosting role here. 

People ask us to - and we've thrown one or two - and they were good - but... it just isn't a thing that is as important to us here. 

PART of this is that my wife works in California. Parties are really social networking events driven by professional goals. When she worked here, we threw more parties - and you include regular casual friends just to fill out the social profile of the party. Now that she works remotely - if we do things with friends - we do it at houses where the host has a professional networking aspect to it, or we all just go out on the town somewhere. 

When I was younger and wished that I had the venue or capital to host epic parties, I had tons of "friends" that would show up. I, much like my friends at the time, was broke ass poor. 20 bucks seemed like a million. Thank god for computers.

Now, here in the future, the past has occurred. The having of money and places for history making parties are not obstacles. Because of the fact we grew up, I would be hard pressed to get 30 people to show up even with  serving top shelf booze and filet mingon or the vegan plant based meat puppet instead of steak.

IG: You were part of a great party, BBS Documentary! True though-I dont know if they had airplane sized pretzel packs as snack material  for  the conference at break-out, or maybe a big bowl of nothing. Still its a party to be proud to have been in attendance. 

So... I was pretty cool and popular up until sometime in 5th grade... and 5th grade through 7th grade I just had an awkward transition where I fell in with the misfits, outcasts and geeks. 

Then the summer between 7th and 8th grade, I sprouted up, my voice dropped, I got a buzzcut and pierced my ear and started wearing a safety pin in it - and suddenly I was in with the popular kids and I ran with it. Got high the first time after school right by the cafeteria loading dock with a transfer kid named Jeff Blackburn who was a clean cut, popular, good looking preppy - fell in with ACTUAL punks from the local high school... 

I tried to bring some of my nerdy friends along - but most of them rejected it. Partially because they tended to have fairly strict parents, partially because they had goals and ambitions and weren't idiots - and probably partially because of typical adolescent fears of rejection and embarrassment and being inadequate.

Yeah... I can't even imagine a High School teacher thinking a mixed adult/student party with alcohol for the adults would be a good idea. 

I mean, I was still partying with a range of kids from like, Jr year in High School until 2nd year or so in College after I was 21. There were 16 and 17 year olds - occasionally even a Freshman or Sophomore who managed to get brought along - and those of us over 21 were always sure to be the FIRST ones to disappear, because the cops inevitably asked the people, "who bought the alcohol?" 

Doesn't matter if you did or didn't. If there are wasted minors around and you're getting wasted in the same scene - the cops are going to try and pin you with contributing to the delinquency and a host of other charges. We were all smart enough before we were 21 to realize that much. 

It does create a weird transition, though - and a high risk one, when you're just recently 21 but your circle includes friends who are recent high school graduates that are not yet legal drinking age and still socialize with actual high school students.

As they pulled up, all the adults just quietly went to one room and sat and waited.  Kids running around like idiots.  Eventually kids were corralled and sent away, and cops came to us, " ok folks. party is over you can all go home now" " be sure you all have a designated driver, have a good evening and be safe"

He ended up losing his job and being run out of town and had to move away. ( smaller town )

Which is fair enough. I never thought I'd have a kid, and my wife was starting to freak out by our late 20's that I might intend to keep that promise. 

Then my Nephew (near my age - see the story of my convoluted family history in Religion> ) had a kid and managed to raise her and I thought to myself - well, if HE can do it... 

So, at around 31, I became a father - and regardless of anything else, or the world she inherits - it enriched my life and made me a far more complete person. Primarily it taught me about true unconditional love - which is a whole essay in itself I'm not going to go into here. Then, his daughter died at 2 from a bacterial meningitis infection - while my kid was only 9 months old.
