Sounds like a stupid question, but consider it for a moment. The US president is our military's commander-in-chief. They take their commands from him, and him only. If the president simply used the military to wipe out Congress (Senate and House), and uses the military to prevent any further elections from taking place, what could anyone do to stop it?
Using the IRS and NSA to gather data on and punish your political opponents is just a slower version of the same thing, it seems to me.
